Donna, Good news. I do not know any foreign languages but run into some of those characters in my braille reading so made a list of the braille symbols for reference. So this got me curious and I found the answer. What Google showed you is true, its just not Voiceover friendly.

Tim, It is possible to override these defaults in systems that use COCOA input methods. You can turn the option key into a emacs-style meta key so that option-f moves forward by word and option-b moves backward by word and other such functions. There is also a vi style of cocoa-input macros

Hi all, In my quest for the inverted exclamation mark, have been reading that on newer Macs, if you hold down a key, accented characters for that letter will pop up as an option. But I have tried this out in both Pages and Text edit with no luck. Does anyone know how to make this feature
