The location /var/spool/mail or /var/mail is only used when a mail server (sendmail, postfix, etc) is receiving the mail. If mail is received via POP it is stored elsewhere. I use getmail, on 770 and gregale. My path is customized, to meet device's nature. Also, mutt finds the path and works

One thing that came as a big shock to me at first was how unstable the device was. I've had random reboots and also programs crashing randomly (mostly opera and navicore). Opera does it from time to time, yes. You might enable swap and go along. Or use links as browser, even better.
