It seems like thunderbird has some difficulty with maildir:

so I'm still using mbox. Are the below errors simply because I wasn't
running rmlist as sudo? It should be run as sudo?

I'm just not sure whether the problem rests with the transport or
alias_maps and alias_database -- alias_maps points to an empty file.

minor correction in naming conventions:

Why does mailman see or use @dur for the FQDN when it should be
dur.bounceme.net?

should only use the FQDN:

I want to subscribe thufir@localhost to a mailing list -- of course
that's rejected for not being a FQDN.
So I subscribed thu...@dur.bouncme.net. Presumably I need to configure
postfix recognize that as localhost?
In terms of mailman, is there a log of what happened. I don't expect
