Dear MARMAM committee,

Please find below details of our recent volunteer call for marine mammal
observations in the Ionian and Aegean sea, where you can collect scientific
data on cetaceans through boat surveys


   -

   Project Manaia, an Ocean Conservation NGO founded by Manuel Marinelli in
   2014. Based in Austria, under the leadership of Manuel this organisation,
   is on a mission across the Mediterranean to preserve seagrass, investigate
   invasive species, and clear marine debris. Project Manaia is committed to
   making a lasting impact, and we're reaching out to explore potential
   collaborations and partnerships that align with its mission.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team of volunteers during our cetacean
expedition in the Ionian and Aegean seas. The expedition takes place
between 21th April and 18th May 2024, with a min placement duration of 14
days. The applications are welcomed until the 1th April 2024.


REQUIREMENTS

-True interest for marine conservation, self-motivation, maturity and
ability to work responsibly;

-Ability to cohabit in a dynamic and multicultural environment;

-Respect for the organisation's rules and willingness to follow standards
and procedures;

-Proven experience of working effectively as part of a team;

-Fluent English (both spoken and written) and good communication skills;

-Willingness to learn new software applications.

-Background in marine biology and previous fieldwork experience are an
advantage.

-Satisfied level of swimming



FIELD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Performing boat-based surveys

-Collecting marine mammals’ sighting and behavioural data, as well as
environmental and anthropogenic data;

-Operating Logger 2010 software on data collection

-Data entry and analysis;

-Cataloguing and matching individuals of target species for photo-ID
studies via Discovery software;

-Promoting citizen-science activities



TRAINING

The DMAD-Marine Mammals Research Association team provides training as well
as mentoring. Volunteers will be given the chance to learn the
methodologies used in marine mammal research including:

- Species identification

-Operating Logger 2010 software during data collection

-Photo-identification protocols

-Behavioural pattern identification

-Visual data collection protocol



PROJECT CONTRIBUTION

Due to the limitation on fundings, there is a fee association to the
expedition. The volunteer contribution to the project is 1500 € for two
weeks.

The fee includes:

   -

   All costs on board (including food, stay onboard, (non-alcoholic)
   drinks, cruising permits, etc.).
   -

   Training and lectures with a copy of the lecture on PDF;
   -

   Fieldwork expenses
   -

   Use of the equipment;
   -

   Scientific support;


Applicants are responsible for their transportation, insurance (all
participants should have health and/or travel insurance) and personal
expenses.
