It seems a long time now since trade union members in the south of Ireland
voted to reject Croke Park 11, a deal promoted by leaders of the Irish
Congress of Trade Unions in partnership with the Fine Gael/Labour coalition
government in Dublin. The current coalition, like the Fianna Fail/Green
coalition that preceded it, has sought to make southern Irish workers pay
for the financial crisis of Irish banks and the meltdown of the so-called
‘Celtic Tiger’ economy.

For several decades the bulk of the union leadership has pushed tripartite
deals with the bosses and the state, a ‘partnership’ model which has been
held up by union leaderships as far afield as New Zealand as worth
emulating. But these tripartite deals did not deliver to workers even
during the ‘good times’ of the ‘boom’ periods in the 1990s and early
2000s. Now the boom has turned to bust the partnership model has simply
locked unions into accepting responsibility for the financial crisis and
agreeing to the austerity measures demanded by the Troika.

*Rhetoric v resistance*

The leadership of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions has engaged in some. .

Social democracy or revolution? A reply to Tim Ginty
Tim Ginty has written an important and thoughtful article in defence of
Labor Party social democracy. (A tale of two campaigns: The Spanish and
Australian elections compared. If the ALP wants to avoid a fate similar
to the Labor type Socialist Workers Party in Spain (and SYRIZA, the
equivalent in Greece, I would add), and avoid losing most of its support
base and being outflanked by new more radical political groupings, Tim
says Labor ‘must rebuild itself as a genuine party of the left. ‘ Can
Labor be rebuilt? This is my reply.

During World War I, thousands of rural southern men, black and white,
refused to serve in the military. Some failed to register for the draft,
while others deserted after being inducted. In the countryside, armed
bands of deserters defied local authorities; capturing them required the
dispatch of federal troops into three southern states.

For most people on the left, including me, American labor struggles
begin with the 1877 railroad strikes and come to a climax with the CIO
organizing drives of the 1930s. This is especially true if you have read
Philip Foner’s “The Great Labor Uprising of 1877”, a Pathfinder book I
read in the early 70s. It was a companion piece to Art Preis’s “Labor’s
Giant Step”, another Pathfinder book that served as a great guide to the
1930s labor struggles and still does.

I would recommend both of these books to people who want to learn about
labor history even if the money goes to a group that has lost the thread
completely on the labor movement if not to speak of the class struggle
in general. To these two must-reads, I would add a new book by Mark A.
Lause, a former member of the Socialist Workers Party who has followed
in the footsteps of Philip Foner and Art Preis with the newly published
“Free Labor: The Civil War and the Making of the American Working Class”.

Amjad Sabri's death is a horrible end to the career of this inheritor of
the tradition of Qawali singing. His father Ghulam and his uncle Maqbool
constituted the Sabri Brothers the best known qawali performers in the west
aster the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

I saw Nusrat and later the Sabris perform in Sydney many years ago. Both
performances were transcendently beautiful To use butchery to silence such
beautiful sounds is profoundly wrong and stupid,

Q: I’ll put the question differently – because the answer is important
to many categories of Syrians, who may be more numerous than they are
believed to be: why has the shuddering earthquake altered the principles
of so many Syrians, but not of the group you are talking about?

A: I think that the crimes and violence that people have been subjected
to would have easily been enough to turn them all into monsters, but
this has not happened across the board. That was proved by what happened
recently during the short truce, when groups of Syrian people went back
to protesting and abandoned the black flag, raising the revolutionary
flag instead. I see the movement of history within its temporal context,
within the movement of historical groups, and within the circumstances
of the production of violence itself. Those people did not simply give
in to reactions: new circumstances were created in their lives, and
these were circumstances that triggered certain things in their lives.
The violent conditions have not arisen spontaneously, whether it be
arming the Islamist groups, or the introduction of immigrant fighters
into Syria, or the impoverishment of the Free Syrian Army and the
assassination of its senior leaders, or the distribution of Islamic
brigades or Daesh across the map, or the various movements that I can no
longer keep track of – as I think many of us no longer can – and their
chaotic prevalence, and the rise of mercenaries. And also the climate
was perfect for all of this to unfold, after half a century of despotic
rule by the Assad family and the unprecedented barbaric violence to
which the Syrian people have been subjected.
