Working Families oriented group.

But the second reason I was opposed to U.S. andNATOforce was that by the
time the Americans started talking about intervening, a third of Libya
was out of Mr. Gaddafi’s hands. And I’ll give you a sense of this. If
you traveled to Libya, Egypt and Syria prior to the Arab Spring, you
would find something interesting. In Libya, since 1987, the military has
been a wreck. There’s no morale. You know, you could walk in and out of
a base without being asked questions. In other words, their military was
a shambles. When Gaddafi’s son visited Benghazi a week into the
rebellion, he came running back to Tripoli and said, you know, Papa,
it’s over. We’ve lost Benghazi. You know, they essentially ceded that
part of the country. Libya was going—Gaddafi’s rule was going to fall.
There was no need forNATOintervention. In Egypt, the military is very
powerful, but you will find something interesting. The soldiers have
dark skin compared to the other Egyptians. They are recruited from upper
Egypt. They are very disciplined, but they are not exactly with high
morale. In Syria, the military has very high morale. You know, it has
often been amazing to me. I keep wondering, why did the Turks and others
believe that the Syrian regime was going to fall like the Libyan regime?
They have completely different military structures, and the morale is
completely different.

So, the second reason I opposed intervention in Libya was it was
inevitable that Gaddafi was going to lose power. Let the process take
its own way. Let them fight a little bit. Let there be a political
dialogue within the rebellion. Let them create alternative structures of
power. If you just give the Libyan people a destroyed country, how are
they going to build a future? And that was the real danger of aerial
bombardment of the style the Americans conduct. They level countries and
then tell people, Well, create a democracy. It doesn’t work like that.
If the Libyans had been given three, four, eight months to fight against
Gaddafi, already much weakened, I think a different outcome might have
been possible.

The chronic underfunding of Amtrak is well known by those who follow the

on the Northeast Corridor are behind attempts in Congress to starve
Amtrak of funds enough to create a crisis.

As for this particular wreck, however, there is another issue that
stands out. Amtrak trains are run with one person in the cab, unlike
almost all freight trains. Thus this engineer had no second pair of
eyes to warn him that he might be missing something, if that is what
happened.

The freight railroads, pulling all kinds of hazardous materials, are
hell bent on eliminating the freight conductor position. They will cite
technology that can run the train, PTC etc. All I can say is the public
beware. Anyone wanting more information on the Single Person Crew issue

Ever since it helped to lead a campaign to defeat a Single Person Crew

Railroad Workers United Statement Regarding the Wreck of Amtrak Train #188

It has been a week now since Amtrak Train #188 derailed at speed east of
Philadelphia, PA. The last week has witnessed endless speculation as the
official investigation into the cause of the derailment continues apace.
Those of us in the rail industry anxiously await the findings. Meantime,
regardless of what the NTSB, the FBI and other agencies discover and
conclude about the tragic wreck, there are a number of facts that are
worth considering.

1 – It is roundly agreed by railroad executives, union officials and
industry insiders that had Positive Train Control (PTC) been in place
and in effect on this section of track, the wreck would more than likely
not have been possible. PTC would have resulted in a train brake
application in order to slow the train, recognizing that its speed was
excessive and therefore unable to negotiate the tight curve ahead. PTC
has been mandated by Congress, but its complete implementation has been
delayed on the Northeast Corridor and elsewhere for a myriad of reasons.
In Amtrak’s case, one of these reasons is a lack of adequate funding
from Congress.

2 – Amtrak has been underfunded for decades and forced to scrape by,
cutting corners and deferring maintenance, ever under the microscope by
a budget cutting Congress more concerned with ideological purity and
political expediency than with safety and security. On the busy
Northeast Corridor where the recent wreck took place, Amtrak faces a
backlog of drastically needed repairs to bridges and tunnels, obsolete
rail interlockings, and trains that rely at times on 1930s-era
components. Repairs for the Northeast Corridor are estimated at 4.3
billion over the next 45 years, while federal funding is expected to
dwindle to $872 million.

3 – As a result of this constant pressure to reduce costs, on March
23rd, 2015, just six weeks prior to the wreck, Amtrak had unilaterally
implemented a new scheduling arrangement for Corridor (NEC) train and
engine crews over the vehement objections of its operating craft unions
– the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLET) and the United
Transportation Union (UTU, now known as SMART-TD). The new schedule
arrangements – designed to save the company $3 million by reducing
scheduled layovers -- were condemned by both unions as a disaster in the
making. Amtrak overturned a tried and true couplet system (trains paired
out and back) for working crews in the NEC that had been in effect, with
little modification, for decades. Prior to March 23rd,**couplets adhered
to the 90-minute layover minimum and took into account other factors
including difficulty of the train in question, duration of trip, number
and location of stops, timeliness etc. Now, not only has the 90-minute
layover been scrapped, but crews have no guarantee of any break
whatsoever. In addition, the new arrangement allows for a different
on-duty time each day of the work week, and these start times are no
longer restricted to within a few hours of one another -- they now can
be any time of the day! (Note: the engineer of Train #188 had
experienced a non-routine westbound trip earlier that day, causing
delays to his train, thereby shortening up an already diminished layover
time under this new scheduling arrangement).

4 – Simple technology has existed for nearly a century now that can aid
and assist in preventing accidents such as this one. As with the wreck
at Spuyten-Duyvil, NY on the Metro North railroad on December 1st, 2013,
a simple transponder could have easily been located west of the curve
that would have prevented the train from entering it at such an excess
speed (in fact, such a transponder is in place on the approach to the
curve in the westbound direction). This being one the tightest and most
restricted curves on the corridor, it seems an appropriate location for
such a life-saving device. (Note: Since the above referenced MN wreck,
such a transponder has since been placed on the section of track leading
to the 30 mph curve where that train derailed).

5 – Amtrak Train #188 – operated by lone engineer Brandon Bostian,
entered the permanent speed restriction at the curve, rated for 50, at
over 100 mph. Whether it was fatigue, the result of a projectile that
hit the train (and possibly the engineer), inattentiveness on the part
of the engineer, or other factors at play, it is expected that the
investigation will eventually pinpoint the cause. Nevertheless, there is
the possibility that we may never know. But we do know this: had there
been a second crew member in the

I have been following this list for at least a year. I continue to learn
from the great information posted here. But now it's time for me to post. I
hope this post is appropriate.

I grew in Florida during the 1970s and 80s. Fidel was a pariah. I would
like to be able to say I challenged this thinking, but I didn't. However I
did think even then that Miami had serious anger management issues and they
just spouted the same tired angry cliches. The Cuba I learned about via my
radio was vastly different from what I was told was fact.

In college, around 1990, I took a course on the Cuban Revolution. It
greatly changed my views not only on Cuba, but about the US's disastrous
history of imperialism. What I learned and remembered dove tails with what
Louis Proyect posted yesterday. <
http://www.columbia.edu/~lnp3/mydocs/state_and_revolution/cuba.htm>

All of this brings me to my question. What books do you recommend about
Fidel and the Cuban Revolution in general? I see many available, but it
seems more than not, they're just anti-Castro pablum.

BTW, Louis, I have now found this page of yours <
http://www.columbia.edu/~lnp3/mypage.htm> which I plan to reference as I
continue my journey left.

The End of Ideology in Cuba?

By Arnold August.

In 1960, the American sociologist and academic Daniel Bell (1919–2011)
published /The End of Ideology/. It became a classic book in official
political science. The publication was listed by /Times Literary
Supplement/ as one of the 100 most influential non-fiction books in the
second half of the 20th century. While there were other “end of
ideologies” in the 1950s and early 1960s, Bell’s is considered the most
authoritative. The many varieties that emerged from this school of
thought have a common denominator. While not oversimplifying this
important trend, for the purposes of this article one can say that it
surfaced out of the perceived failures of both socialism in the former
U.S.S.R. and capitalism in the West. It was born out of opposition to
“extremism.”

In November 1968, along with other political science students at McGill
University in Montreal, I founded the Political Science Students
Association. It organized a strike around two basic demands. The first
was student participation on faculty hiring committees; the second,
linked to this potential student empowerment, demanded a more inclusive
faculty and curriculum. This would include writings other than by Daniel
Bell (who, of course, was considered mandatory reading and enjoyed
uncontested reference in political science), progressive social
scientists and the works of Marx and Lenin. These were all excluded at
the time. After a 10-day occupation and strike, the students’ demands
were finally met by the university.

Bell was blind to the inevitable uprisings that were about to take place
in the U.S. among African-Americans shortly after his best-seller rolled
off the press. These progressive struggles, like those of the Native
peoples, who also revolted, have their origins in the Thirteen Colonies.
In the 1960s, American students were also attracted to alternative
ideologies and politics. In fact, the youth movement was omnipresent
throughout North America and much of Europe. While this inclination in
the 1960s was characterized by different left-wing political and
ideological features, and experienced its ups and downs, it was the
death knell for the End of Ideology hypothesis. However, Bell’s heritage
keeps coming back to haunt us.

In Cuba, in the last year or so, there has been a steady increase in the
End of Ideology code words and buzz phrases emitted by some marginal
Cuban bloggers and intellectuals. They were timid at first but became
increasingly bold. To mention just a few: complaining of what they see
as a “sterile dichotomy between socialism and capitalism”; advising
Cuban revolutionaries to be “balanced and more profound in offering
their criticism” of U.S. imperialism; opposing what they consider the
extremist “Fidelista” and “anti-Castro” positions, placing both on the
same footing; labelling those who are Marxist-Leninist or Fidelista as
“extremists” or “fanatics”; writing about “two major fallacies of what
it means to be a revolutionary in Cuba, from the left and right,” both
being based on “exclusive dogma”; and, finally, asserting that “life is
much more profound than even ideology.”

Reading these pieces, my university days back in 1968 kept piercing
through my thought process. How was it possible that we opposed the End
of Ideology in the heart of capitalism yet now it rears its head in
Cuba, of all places? One can argue that the opposition in Cuba is coming
from the “left,” that is, from those who claim that they support the
Revolution. Well, where else can it emerge if not from the so-called
left? This is Cuba. Let us not forget that Bell had identified as a
leftist. His opposition to ideology was ostensibly from the leftist
outlook and not the right. This, after all, was how he won his
credibility and credentials. Bell became disillusioned with socialism.
He could not see an alternative so he decided to wage a struggle against
both capitalism and socialism. His work is a reflection of his own
personal/political predicament. Objectively, however, this so-called
neutrality against extremes consists in throwing a life jacket in
support of capitalism. It is no accident that he is so appreciated by
the ruling elites of the West.

I have always maintained that the most dangerous opposition to the Cuban
Revolution comes from the so-called left, and not from the openly right
Plattists, or annexationists. It is a cancer in Cuban society that, if
left to grow without sharp ideological resistance, can influence the
most naive, especially among youth, intellectuals and artists.

Let's recap what independent socialist Cuba dealt with after Irma. And
contrast this with the Puerto Rican colony of the US as Trump's visit
approaches. This report is from a few days ago. Do you think the kind of
detail Cuba has managed to compile has happened in Puerto Rico? Never
mind the spectacularly different outcomes? Which you will *NEVER *hear
reported in the corporate media. In fact the Trump administration is
seeking to make sure you won't hear from Cuba by stopping the issuance
of visas to Cubans.

Jon Flanders

*"The National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) along the
three chiefs of the strategic regions the country is divided into,
reported the following figures to the Cuban National Defense president:*

*Close to 1.9 million Cubans were evacuated to safer places. Up to date
11,689 people remain in shelters, receiving state support of food and
other first need items in nine provinces.
Over 158 thousand houses were affected: 14,657 were totally destroyed
and 16,646 suffered large damages. Also, over 23 thousand lost their
roofs, and over 100 thousand suffered some damages on them.*

*The National Power Grid suffered major damages in most of the country.
Some 4,000 poles were knocked down by the winds, close to 3 500
kilometers of power lines went down. Out of the 8 largest power plants,
half of them had to halt due to the severity of the damages. Two weeks
later, 99.9 percent of the country had the power restored.*

*In telecommunications, a quarter of a million landlines were affected,
as well as 1,471 internet lines. 27 phone towers fell along 4,764 poles.
Today, 85.3 percent of these services are already restored."*

Cuban Doctors Revolt: ‘You Get Tired of Being a Slave’
By ERNESTO LONDOÑO

If you google Cuban Doctors you will find lots of articles like this.
It's a real phenomenon and reflects tensions in Cuba that do exist. The
Cuban government doubled health workers salaries in response to the
disparity of pay between them and those working in the tourist industry.
I certainly saw plenty of hustling going on with tourism in Cuba while I
was there.
But I think the NYT runs this article now because the issue of Cuban aid
to Puerto Rico is staring them in the face. Puerto Rican's will be
asking why Haiti got Cuban medical help and they don't. Not to mention
asking why they can't have Venezuelan oil that has been offered.

As it turns out, the article is online and truly misbegotten.

How so? I don't see any mention of the need to for the uprising in
Germany to co-incide with the date of the October Revolution. What
Trotsky argues for is the need for
a conscious decision when to strike. Which makes sense to me. Seizing
power means actually seizing things. That has to be planned and
organized. If a union decides to go
on strike, it has to be a very planned and timed affair. The same would
hold for a revolution.

Spenser Rapone enlisted as an infantryman out of high school in 2010,
and deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 in the Army Rangers. After returning
from his combat tour, he applied and was accepted into the United States
Military Academy at West Point, NY in 2012, graduating and receiving his
commission in May 2016. Deciding he could no longer stomach the
immorality of US imperialism, he spoke out against the reprehensible
actions of the military in September 2017. He ultimately resigned his
commission, and was separated from the Army in June 2018 with an Other
Than Honorable discharge.
