The Melbourne Cup is Australia's pre-eminent horse race (equivalent to Kentucky Derby in the US) -it's billed as the race that stops a nation and in Melbourne the day it is held (the 1st Tuesday in November so coinciding with the US presidential election every 4yrs). But for all the populism beat up around it is dispiritingly like any other race-only more so. The day at Melbourne's Flemington racecourse is dominated by corporate marquees where celebrities parade for big dollars.
