Question is however, are you using the GTK backend?
ie
from matplotlib.backends.backend_gtkagg import FigureCanvasGTKAgg as
FigureCanvas
from matplotlib.backends.backend_gtkagg import NavigationToolbar2GTKAgg as
NavigationToolbar
backend_gtkagg then imports matplotlib.backends._gtkagg
