DISH, Cablevision Push Sat Sale at FCC

EchoStar and Cablevision asked the Federal Communications Commission to expedite approval of their application asking for regulatory approval of EchoStar's proposed purchase of the satellite that supported the VOOM satellite TV service.

VOOM went dark on April 30 after Cablevision and its Rainbow DBS unit struggled to obtain a sufficient number of customers for the small dish offering. In January, EchoStar agreed to purchase the lone VOOM satellite - Rainbow 1 - and other assets for $200 million.

In a letter sent to the FCC Monday, the companies pointed out that a petition asking the commission to deny the EchoStar/Cablevision deal was withdrawn last week. Cablevision Chairman Charles Dolan, who withdrew the petition, had fought company efforts to shut down VOOM, and partnered with a group called the Association of Consumers to Preserve and Promote DBS Competition to oppose the EchoStar purchase.

Observers have speculated that a decision from the FCC concerning the Cablevision/EchoStar deal would be made early this summer.
