SES release

SES ASTRA to Procure ASTRA 1M Satellite

BETZDORF, Luxembourg--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2005--

SES ASTRA announces that it has issued a request for proposals for the procurement of a new satellite, to be designated ASTRA 1M

ASTRA 1M will replace ASTRA 1H and provide in-orbit backup capacity for the ASTRA fleet at 19.2(degree) East. The satellite will carry 32 active Ku-band transponders.

The spacecraft is being procured ahead of the projected satellite replacement schedule in order to provide additional security to support SES ASTRA's growth at the 28.2(degree) East orbital position serving the UK and Irish markets. ASTRA 2C, currently in service at 19.2(degree) East, will indeed be relocated to 28.2(degree) East following the successful launches of ASTRA 1KR and ASTRA 1L, to provide additional capacity to meet the strong demand in the UK and Irish markets.

SES ASTRA has decided to advance the procurement of the replacement spacecraft in order to protect the timing of the relocation of ASTRA 2C, in the unlikely event of an unsuccessful launch of ASTRA 1KR or ASTRA 1L. The procurement is expected to include the option to interrupt the build programme and to resume the build at a later date more closely aligned to the replacement of ASTRA 1H capacity.

Ferdinand Kayser, President & CEO of SES ASTRA, comments:

"ASTRA 1M's primary mission is to replace ASTRA 1H, continuing the provision of premium capacity with full backup capability, which is a unique feature of the ASTRA satellite system. By slightly advancing the procurement of ASTRA 1M, we will also protect the timing of the move of ASTRA 2C to 28.2(degree)East, to secure the growth in the buoyant UK and Irish markets."
