Hi,
Because of the great distance of the Sun from the Earth, the shadow of any object
at
roughly the same distance from the Sun as the Earth is being projected by nearly
parallel
rays. For all practical purposes, they are parallel rays. This means that the shadow

Hello again List, It was not a plane! This shadow covered an area of a few
blocks for a second or less, there was not a cloud in the sky mind you! But
it seemed like a large dark cloud had covered the sun. I know planes better
than most people and have been around them and airports all my life!
Hi Tom, Ron, Sterling and List,
I agree with Ron that what you likely saw was the effect
of a plane passing in front of the sun. But you and
Sterling bring up an interesting topic -- that of transits.
Don't hold your breath waiting for an asteroid to pass
between you and the Moon or watching
Well it is nice to know, that my membership in the IMCA was cancelled WITHOUT telling me. How low can you go??? It would have been nice if someone had TOLD me. What did I do that was so bad? Would someone in authority to this group please explain to me what I did that was so bad to expel me.
Steve,
I checked the list and your IMCA number is not
listed.
Are you sure that you have been removed or have you
been omitted from the list by mistake? I would think that aIMCA
member would be advised in advance of being removed to ensure that the member's
side of things is alsoheard.
Steve??
Your message is posted. So, has it been cancelled
or just a mistake?
Happy Holidays to all and have a prosperous New
Year.

It was probably a shadow of a plane, and since it had just passed in
front of the Sun, it would be very hard to see from the ground due to
the Sun's overbearing glare.
Well, I guess I need to clarify a few things! With all do respect Ron, I am
not an idiot! It was not a plane! The glare

Greetings all,
IF this is true (that Steve Arnold's membership in IMCA has been canceled),
I, for one, would like to know the reason. I would also like to know who has
this authority.
Thanks, Michael

Maybe it was a medical problem, amaurosis fugax, which is a transient
ischemic attack or ministroke, classically a dark curtain that falls across
both visual fields but sometimes is described as everything getting dark.
Of course a pre-syncopal or near-faint episode can also present similarly...
Why don't we just say it was a weather balloon? The point is it was something unidentified and this individual has no clue what it was but he's pretty sure what it wasn't. Meteorite, asteroid, flock of geese, or alien craft we are clueless in the identity of this object. But based on the
Regarding seeing the shadow of an asteroid on the ground as it
crosses the face of the sun it would seem to me that the asteroid would
have to be extremely large and extremely close to the earth for its shadow
to be of a signficant size to block the sun however briefly. (If it was
far from the
Hello Bob and list. In my first post on this subject, I asked the list if it
was possible for some thing like an asteroid to cause this. I am not trying
to say it was! I do know that a bird or a plane could not cast a shadow
large enough to darken the sky over such a large area! I do not know
