Hi,
Planet, from the Greek, planetes, i.e., the wanderers.
So, from the initial usage, planet is operationally defined
as a non-sidereal object visible from the surface of the
Earth using only the naked eye for detection.
Once we get up to the Copernican concept (which
dates all the way

Well, its not really all that cool I guess. I took the
video with a hand held digital camera in video mode in
the middle of the city, is sort of fuzzy, small, you
hear crickets in the background and its only 3 seconds
long.
But well, its the first time that I have ever seen an
actual planet live
I want to thank everyone who responded to my question. I received a lot of
information, public and private, about this very interesting event.

responded has dropped the ball.
I told the teacher that I won't have the pieces by this Thursday, the day of

Hi Sterling and List,
The definition of a planet that I've encountered that I like
best is pretty scientifically concise and simple:
Any natural body orbiting a star that has a mass greater than the
sum of the masses of all other objects in a similar orbit.
The only fuzziness in the definition
a limit of 2000 miles
for the minimum diameter of anything called a planet is like
saying only individuals over five feet tall can be considered
human beings. It's arbitrary and meaningless.
I just love your sence of fairness and humor.

My preferred definition is entirely unscientific:
Any of the nine planetary bodies orbiting the Sun that have been
traditionally called planets. This includes usage in mythology,
literature, and scientific publications.
This leaves the IAU free to define any number of new terms to describe

Hi, Rob,
Actually, Ceres contains almost 40% of
the mass of the Belt. We used to think
that Ceres constituted less of the mass,
but it turns out that the Belt is deficient in
the smallest sizes of asteroids predicted
