Using Google Earth I have found a several very nice
craters of volcanic origin that could be easily
mistaken for impact craters in Saudi Arabia. If
someone will host the images I will gladly post them

Sorry, but to me it sounds like a tree root fire
spreading to a buried tree stump. The explosive force
required to make a hole that large would have woken up
everyone in the neighborhood.
