Hey everyone, today March 5, 1960one of the greatest
chondrite meteorite showers ever occurred in Burkina
Faso, the Gao meteorite fell. Tens if not hundreds of
thousands of stones fell, and many kilos of stones are
still being found there today.
Gao is a fantastic and very affordable meteorite,
A METEORID is a METEORITE that is still in space.
Not really. A meteoroid is simply the physical object that produces a
meteor. Most never become meteorites. The object may be called a
meteoroid while it is still in space (but destined to encounter the
Earth), or the burning particle itself
I've just returned from a new fall. It looked like everyone missed this fall,
so I went.
I spent 2 weeks down there hunting down stones, and canvasing the area house
by house. Its mainly agricultural land and dominated by vineyards.
Unfortunately, there is never plowing in vineyards, so

I was going to guess Chile as well. Maybe somewhere between Santiago and
New Zealand.

Ooops, maybe not. Now that I read the article more closely it says...
Questions also remain over where the incident occurred. It was initially
reported that it happened just after the Auckland-bound aircraft entered
New Zealand airspace.
But Lan Chile said yesterday the flaming object was seen
Oh, and the article was from almost a year ago...
Way to go McCartney...
I'm done making a fool of myself now...

South of France ? (a recent fall vanished there a few weeks ago, not far
from a famous wine area).
Just a modest guess as I am not sure you could have so easily planned such
a trip...
Anyway, superb!
Congrats!

I've been told to cut the new fall in 99% alcohol. I've had my
secretary calling the local grocery stores and drugstores for this
stuff, but its not carried. I've been told Safeway carries it, but
they're not in Austin. A local medical places has it for $16 per pint
(ouch) which is excessive.

Hi McCartney and List,
Congratulations on the new fall.
For saftey sakes, please do not cut the stone in
alcohol unless you have a sealed saw like a low-speed
Buehler designed for this kind of cutting. The
smallest of sparks can ignite pure ethyl alcohol and
you will not see it burning because

CHILE???!
I'm guessing that a good many of you might be surprised to learn that there
are a fair number of vineyards in Texas, mostly west Texas, that have been
producing excellent wines for several decades

I agree with you, Michael. Bill Mason's additive is
great. It preserves the metal and rubber seals while
allowing the use of distilled water.
Alcohol is extremely harsh on a standard lapidary saw.
Not only is not the best coolant, it dissolves the
grease in the bearings, hardens rubber seals and
Good grief guys - look at the braided stream - not France by any stretch or

Since I moved to New Zealand getting alcohol has been
a pain but when I lived in canada I could go to any
drug store and get it. They had 70% stuff on the shelf
and you had to get a licenced pharmacist to approve
you buying the 99% stuff which was kept behind the
counter. You got questioned about
I don't understand where the problem is with using water as a coolant. I
have been cutting meteorites in water for years with no problems.
Just pop the meteorites in an oven ( which I have right next to my saw )
right after they are cut. No Rust.
Using alcohol seems like an unnecessary risk.
Steve,
Any pics? post a photo at the skyrock, we all would like to see it,
there will be many envous members who buy kilos every other week and
have never got an iron. .
