The falls you mention seem to be concentrated around the era in the Western hemisphere loosely called 'the Dark Ages.' While I have no reason to doubt that the people involved died, possibly even by meteorite, I find it odd that so many fatalities happened within a relatively limited time

Don't equate freezing with cold, at least not in everyday terms. At the Inner Core, the Iron is freezing; going from a liquid to a solid. The same amount of energy to melt something is the exact same amount of energy that something gives off as it freezes. The change of state is key here. It
