Hello Listers
With The Dawn mission nearing Vesta in July, I found an article that
is engaging in the evolution of Vesta and Ceres and how these two asteroids
interacted with Jupiter and survived the early violent evolution in the Solar
System. Please take a look down below and learn some

NASA SPACECRAFT CONFIRMS
Hi Ron and List,
What a great opportunity to get some up-close experience with the crater. :)
For those dealers who might think about this venture, keep this is
mind - for the majority of work involving the crater, one must usually
sign a paper promising to refrain from any private collection
Note that this is only open to 16 people and you must be a geology grad student.

Hello,
I believe the agreement to not sell, is only for Canyon Diablo meteorites.
Unless things have changed since I last saw the paper work, You can not sell
Canyon Diablo material for a period of 2 years. It did not state other
meteorites.

Hello Listers
For all of you that collect irons I have a couple questions. The first one is I
know some people seal their iron slices with a clear coat lacker, now is this
safe to do if done right, and if so, what is the producted used. If someone
wants to take it off the clear coat what can

Hi, Shawn.
I use CLR on a Q-tip to remove rust, and rinse off the CLR with
isopropyl alcohol.
Rather than hassle with nitric acid solutions I use computer board

Michael M and Listers
As for the Radio Etchant solution do you apply it in the same manner as you
would with nitric acid and once you see the desired etch you stop the process?
As for a lacquer finish if you have that on a slice can you use acetone to
remove it or sand it off?
Shawn Alan
Hi Shawn,
PC board etchant works ten times faster than nitric, so you need to
watch the etch as it progresses and be ready to shut it down the
instant you like what you see. No harm, of course, if it goes
too far -- you can always repolish and re-etch until you get the
result you want. Just
Yup, like Rob said, with the etchant it's literally dab-dab-dab-rinse,
how does that look? dab-dab-rinse-done. You don't want to soak the
iron in the etchant like you do with nitric, but rather use a foam
brush to apply.

Hello Shawn,
The radio shack etchant is ferric chloride and it works very fast. It is a
deep etch and will give more contast and bring out detail you will not get
using Nitric. (We etched a Fredericksberg Hexahedrite for Richard Norton

Dear Friends,
Although it is a maar, it is still a rather interesting

impact craters.

Ron,
I'm sure many are thanking you--me, most of all.
Your post is a great comprehensive procedure for etching.
I now see my past problems--leaving the FC on for too long and not oiling
first.
Many thanks

List,
I have a question.
With this new data from MESSENGER about the surface composition of Mercury;
http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/news_room/details.php?id=174
What does this mean it terms of what a meteorite would be expected to look
like?
Would it be metallic -ish?
Anyone, Thanks.
