Dear List Members,
I have some great auctions ending this evening. I will only be running
meteorite auctions until the end of the month and then move onto other
pursuits. If all goes according to plan, my last set of meteorite auctions
will end on June 3rd. I have surpassed every goal
Adam,
Having bought some of your top-notch material over the last couple of years,
I want to say thank you. My collection would not be the same without you.

Hi All,
I have a 186g whole NWAX stone, thus it's unclassified, which I purchased
solely because it looked like a Ureilite. The first thing I did was drop it in
a jar of nitric to clean it up a bit, just kidding, actually the first thing
was to see if it scratched a microscope slide, which it
Hi William,
First question: are you sure it's a meteorite? Very few meteorites scratch
glass, and those that do do so only weakly. Quartz, in contrast, will really
dig in to glass. I haven't tried it with a ureilite, but (as you surmise) the
polycrystalline nanodiamond content might be high
Nice clear pictures of a polished face will go a long way to help determine
(not conclusively) that you have an ureilite.

I've been thinking about the email Jeff sent out some time back and wanted
to propose a slightly different set of names and simplify the nomenclature.
You can see Jeff's original email below. I think we have all struggled with
defining meteorites that are neither observed falls nor finds and part
Mendy,
All due respect to you and Jeff Grossman (one of our Royalty figures) but, to
me a fall is either observed or there is great evidence like damage caused by
the impact. All else is a find. Because after all, all finds are falls or how
else would they be here?
Best Rgards,
Carl
Hi Adam,
Sorry to see you go! I’ve bought a number of meteorites from you over the
years, and I always appreciated your good deals and honest business practices.
Best of luck with your new pursuits.

Thanks folks for all the advice, suggestions, and opinions, I get the overall
idea and I'll not give so much weight to my simple little test. By the way, the
reference to nitric was a joke, seriously it was just a joke, I'd never use
nitric, sulphuric however is a different story.
To address
Fall, find, anything further is unnecessary clutter. All falls are
finds, but not all finds are falls, the rest is just semantics.

I have a very deep scratch on my windshield from a piece of dry lake
mud that got dragged by my windshield wiper. I'm not sure what
correlation you can make between something scratching glass and its
identification. I'm pretty certain the dry lake mud was not from a
urelite.

As one of those buyers, I want to wish you good luck in your new venture.

Hello Mendy and Listers
Mendy glad you posted what Jeff suggested.. Kinda makes since, but at
the end of the day all someone has to do is put that info on the
nomenclature page in description of the meteorite. I think fall or find
is perfect. All finds are falls at one point in time and all fall
