When we look at the smoke trail or meteor train from the Russian
fireball, what we're seeing is fine meteor dust lit up by the sun,
correct? Is there a water vapor component as well?

My wife just found a copperhead under her foot. All this talk about
rattle snake and this one didn't rattle.
Copperhead? I'm not aware of copperheads in California. I've never heard
of any here and I've lived here nearly 66 years. Perhaps you are thinking of

George: you are right, the gopher snake and the king snake can both look
pretty imposing and are typically run over by misinformed motorists.
Those snakes do a lot to get rid of rodents, etc. Now I was born here
over 67 years ago, but must confess that I spent a few years in Grad

now, turns into a zoo during the summer months. The rafters take over the
area...especially in the vicinity of Lotus Park. As for Placerville, I always

Out of curiosity, can someone tell me which direction the meteor was
traveling that produced the Sutter Mill meteorites? Was it going roughly from
Coloma, Ca towards Rocklin, or the opposite? I never been able to get that
pinned down

Thanks Rob, you helped me out a lot. When the meteor first entered the
atmosphere, I was hearing a variety of interpretations. The one that puzzled
me the most was a report that it had exploded over the town of
Snelling...which is about 20 or so miles northeast of Merced, CA.

Well...I spent two days out in the Coloma and Lotus Park area searching
for the illusive Sutter Mill meteorite. I was there on the 25th with some
light rain showers to deal with. The heavier rain occurred the next day I
understand. Then I went yesterday the 30th. I had no luck with both
Coloma...that's where gold was discovered in California...Sutters Mill and
all. :O) Anyhow, I've driven thru Coloma many times and the general area.
Its very hilly...actually mountainous with lots of vegetation...lots and
lots of poison oak.

Spoke to several people from Creston and Area who have confirmed
hearing and
seeing the meteor hitting Kootenay Lake...
I haven't been following this, but was this at night? If so, then it must
have made one heck of a splash to be able to see it hit the lake.

The California one seems to have generated a good bit of reports (15 so
far).
In regards as to it being a potential meteorite dropping meteor, the
following words 2 seconds, Fast and 6:45 am in the reports all work against

In years past, I'd see a fair number of green meteors...mostly with the
bright one's. Once I went thru my records and noted the colors. I believe I
recorded more greens with the Geminids than any other shower.

Actually, I believe its about 5 seconds per mile... 3600 seconds per
hour divided by 750 miles per hour.
I believe that's at sea level...what would the speed of sound be at about

Beacon)? Some places meteorite hunters go do not have cell phone coverage
My wife is an avid back packer. I often don't go on these hikes, but I
still worry about where she's at and her status when she hikes. So we
April and sent signals

None of these look like any missile launch I've ever seen here in
California. These are all no doubt aircraft contrails. All the missile

Hi all...just got back from my 9 day canoe trip on the Green River in Utah
and found this interesting thread. So...here's my list of hobbies...
1) Ten years of serious meteor observing...don't do it now.
2) Scenic and Still Life Photography...Very active about 30 years
ago...took a break
with a trajectory much shallower than 45 degrees. Logically.
I don't know, but I wonder if the shape of the terrain upon
impact(hills/gulleys etc) or perhaps a varied pattern of rock strength
underground could
have had some influence to the craters shape?
