A while back I was dry cutting (slowly with a thin low-density diamond blade) a piece of Indarch, which produced a rather disagreeable odour. I put the smell down to the reaction of the finely powdered air- sensitive minerals such as oldhamite and niningerite with the moisture in the air.

Pyrite, as in FeS2 is not ferromagnetic but diamagnetic. Upon heating pyrite oxidizes and produces magnetic products (oxides). In contrast, CoS2 with the pyrite structure is ferromagnetic. Anyway, pyrite is rarely found in meteorites.
