[meteorite-list] Meteorite found in Croatia seven years ago, question
Hi all We were just told about a meteorite that was found in a park in Croatia back in 2008 or 2009. Does anyone know the name of it and where it is now? [meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: June 25 - July 1, 2014
http://mars.nasa.gov/mer/mission/status.html#opportunity OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Rover Uses Arm to Study Several Rocks and Takes Panoramic Images - sols 3704-3710, June 25, 2014-July 1, 2014: Rover Uses Arm to Study Several Rocks and Takes Panoramic Images Opportunity is exploring south along the west rim of Endeavour Crater. The rover is currently surveying a region where orbital data suggests the presence of aluminum-hydroxyl clay minerals. On Sol 3705 (June 26, 2014), after collecting some color Panoramic Camera (Pancam) observations; Opportunity bumped 5 feet (1.5 meters) to reach some interesting surface targets with the robotic arm instruments. A full 360-degree Navigation Camera (Navcam) panorama was taken to document the rover's location and potential drive directions. On Sol 3707 (June 28, 2014), the rover began three sols worth on in-situ (contact) investigations. A Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic was collected of the surface target Sodaville, followed by a placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) for an overnight integration on the same. On the next sol, Opportunity collected a MI mosaic of the target Tuscaloosa, followed by another APXS placement. On the third sol, the rover investigated a target just offset from Sodaville, with another MI mosaic and APXS placement. With the work complete at this target area, on Sol 3710 (July 1, 2014), Opportunity drove over 85 feet (26 meters) south with mid-drive Pancam imagery. Another full 360-degree Navcam panorama was taken to document the new rover location and potential drive directions. Opportunity is in good health with no resets or faults, well-behaved wheel currents and ample energy. As of Sol 3710 (July 1, 2014), the solar array energy production was 745 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.762 and a solar array dust factor of 0.872. Total odometry is 24.62 miles (39.62 kilometers). __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://three.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Dropship Offers Safe Landings for Mars Rovers
http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Technology/Dropship_offers_safe_landings_for_Mars_rovers Dropship Offers Safe Landings for Mars Rovers European Space Agency 3 July 2014 The dramatic conclusion to ESA's latest StarTiger project: a dropship quadcopter steers itself to lower a rover gently onto a safe patch of the rocky martian surface. StarTiger's Dropter project was tasked with developing and demonstrating a European precision-landing capability for Mars and other targets. The Skycrane that lowered NASA's Curiosity rover onto Mars showed the potential of this approach, precisely delivering rovers to their science targets while avoiding rock fields, slopes and other hazards. StarTiger is a fresh approach to space engineering, explains Peter de Maagt, overseeing the project. Take a highly qualified, well-motivated team, gather them at a single well-equipped site, then give them a fixed time to solve a challenging technical problem. This latest team was hosted at Airbus Defence Space's facility in Bremen, Germany, joined by engineers from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Portgual's Spin.Works aeronautics company, and Poland's Poznan University of Technology Institute of Control and Information Engineering. Starting from scratch for the eight-month project, the Dropter team was challenged to produce vision-based navigation and hazard detection and avoidance for the dropship. It has to identify a safe landing site and height before winching down its passenger rover on a set of cables. Flying to a maximum height of 17 m, the dropship comes gently down to 10 m above the ground, where it begins lowering the rover on a 5 m-long bridle, coming lower until the rover touches down. Then it returns to a safe altitude. Flight testing took place at Airbus' Trauen site in northern Germany, which back in the 1940s was the scene of spaceplane pioneer Eugen Sanger's rocket experiments. A 40 m by 40 m Mars-scape was created, littered with hazardous rocks, where the dropship had to pick a safe spot to deliver its passenger. The dropship was customised for the project from commercial quadcopter components, with a smaller drone used for preparatory indoor testing. Using GPS and inertial systems to fly into position, it then switched to vision-based navigation supplemented by a laser range-finder and barometer to land its rover autonomously. This demonstration having proved the concept, the dropship approach is now available for follow-on development by planetary missions to come. About StarTiger StarTiger stands for Space Technology Advancements by Resourceful, Targeted and Innovative Groups of Experts and Researchers working within the Agency's TRP Basic Technology Research Programme. It brings team members together on a single site to work on a set challenge, aiming to produce a working prototype by the end of the project's time limit. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://three.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Greg Hupe Nature's Vault, Inc. - Meteoritic Future Guaranteed!
Dear Meteorite Community, In recent months my brother, Adam, has publicly commented several times that he has taken steps to take a break from meteoritics, including selling his equipment except for perhaps one saw. I feel compelled to send this notice since many people mistake Adam for me and vice-versa even though I have been primarily working on my own for the last 10 years since I moved to Florida. While my brother has announced his break... I, Greg Hupe, strive to provide the very best meteorites and customer service personally and through my company, Nature's Vault, Inc. I am more engaged in all aspects of meteoritics than ever before and look forward to working far into the future to bring out more rare and exciting meteorites. I am here to stay and look forward to working with like-minded individuals. I have many great friends in all aspects of meteoritics and related fields such as space science and travel. The Hupe name and Nature's Vault will continue to be an integral part of meteoritics far into the future! Re: [meteorite-list] Greg Hupe Nature's Vault, Inc. - Meteoritic Future Guaranteed!
Hi Greg and List, This is good news. The collector market would certainly feel the hit if both Hupes bowed out of the field. Questions : Is Adam on a temporary hiatus, or is this a permanent vacation? And, what is Adam doing with his considerable stockpile of premium meteorites? Will you be offering any of his material through your own store, or is Adam's stuff going to stay locked away in his stash? Now, wouldn't it be ironic if Adam was out artifact hunting and not even thinking about meteorites, and then he chances across the first North American lunar? It recently happened to someone looking for firewood in Morocco. Stranger things have happened. [meteorite-list] [OT] In Memory
G'Day List I met this really nice guy on SkyRock Cafe and for some unknown reason, he really had an impact. He was also a contributor on the Met List as well as my own forum. Over time, we became the best of friends, not only with him but also with his family. I felt sorry that he didn't have a detector and as I had a spare one, I sent one to him. And it became a joke with us because the cost for shipping was more than the value of the detector. Over the years, 2e exchanged little trinkets, mainly for our wives, but meteorites were our passion. We communicated on a constant basis but then I lost contact with him. I knew that the situation was getting a little rough in Venezuela. But I always remember his words, Be Happy I woke up this morning to an email from his wife, Mimi And this is with a heavy heart, informing me that she had been trying to track me down to let me know that Gian Gallo (Larense) had passed away. Farewell my friend. You will be missed but not forgotten. The stars are now your canvas. Have fun. Re: [meteorite-list] [OT] In Memory
Hi Johnno, I am saddened to hear this. I also recall Gian fondly. He was one of the first people I talked to about meteorites. I did my first trade with him and he designed my original avatar graphic with the old man having his hat-brim pierced by a falling meteorite. I still use it in some forums. When Sky Rock lost it's reputation and then went under, I lost touch with him. I wish I had kept in touch - a regret of mine now. Can I ask, how did he pass away?
