We now plan to spend a day or two nosing about the Meteor Crater area (no,
we won't collect, although putting rare earth magnets in my shoes is
tempting...) Anyone stay overnight in the area? Suggestions for hotels?
Our choices in Winslow are big chain or local. Big chains are reliable as

Howdy Folks,
Just a quick reminder that my auctions of many rare and historic meteorites are ending
in about 24 hours. There are still many good deals left including Seldon, an LL5;
Leoville, a CV3.0, Beardsley, an important fall and many others. Also please note the

Hello Marc,
I don't think that your anticipation is correct.
In fact Phil Bagnall from England, formerly, maybe still?
on the list has a special page on his website about spiraling
meteors.
Personally during the surprise -pre 17 hours - of the Leonids

We just had a discussion on this on the meteorobs list (www.meteorobs.org -
and then the July archive).
I do not believe in spiraling meteors at all, and in 15 years of dedicated
meteor observations never saw one. I think all of these reports stem from
two origins: one is fragmenting meteors

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Reaches 180 Sols! - sol 179-180, July 15, 2004
On sol 179, Spirit woke up at a new location and spent the day
performing remote sensing with the miniature thermal emission
spectrometer, including an overnight observation.
Hi All,
I echo Marco's position -- meteors absolutely do not corkscrew. You
are talking about objects travelling at a minimum of 25,000 mph. The
force necessary to divert an object with reasonable mass from a
straight line trajectory is enormous.
Take a typical line-of-sight range of 80 km,
