Good news indeed!

BTW: A repair in 1993 and in 1999 was (partly) conducted by our
Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier:

STS-103 Discovery (19-27 December 1999) was an 8-day mission. The
primary objective was the repair and servicing of the Hubble Space
Telescope (HST), in particular the replacement of six gyroscopes
which are necessary to meet the telescope`s very precise pointing
requirement. During this spaceflight, Nicollier carried out his first
spacewalk (EVA), of 08:10 hours duration, to install a new computer
and one of three fine guidance sensors. He is the first European to
obtain EVA experience on a Shuttle flight.

[meteorite-list] New Mauretanian meteorite?

2006-12-18 Thread Peter Marmet
On behalf of Beda Hofmann, who's e-mails do not make it to the list
at this time:

Hello list

Does anyone know about a recent fall in Mauretania? I have received a
sample
of a meteorite that supposedly fell on October 12, 2006. At first I
did not
believe the story, the stuff looks like El Hammami and probably is
also an H.
However, first results from low-level gamma-spectroscopy indicate it
is really
a recent fall (short-lived radionuclides are present).

Please let me know if somebody knows that other labs are working on the
classification already...

Re: [meteorite-list] a few other auction surprises

2007-02-08 Thread Peter Marmet
Hello Zelimir,

the same here!

Millbillillie went for 1100.00 USD, our maximum bid: 1300.00 USD!!!

Sylacauga went for 1525.00 USD, our maximum bid: 2250.00 USD!!

Tenham went for 800.00 USD, our maximum bid: 1200.00 USD!!!

I made this bids for a friend of mine.
We both are very frustrated!

Cheers,
Peter

Zelimir Gabelica wrote:

 Hi Mike, list,

Mike's reported hammer prices will probably shed more shadow than
 light on
 that famous auction.

While we are at trying to clear all points, here are some of my own
 amazements.

I have put 11 absentee bids and four of them turned to be above the
 hammer
 prices. These are:

 Itemhammer ($) my bid ($)

 19 Gorlovka 160 (Achim) 210
 35 Marilia 610 710
 52 Quenggouk180 260
 60 Vernon Co266 260

 1) Shouldn't have I been the winner or ??? (badly missing
 something!)

 2) For other 6 items, my bids were logically lower than hammers.
 This is OK
 (at least on my side)

 3) But for the last item, here is the other surprise.
Iris Lang sent me the same letter as to Peter, about item N° 29,
 Khohar.
 Here it is

 Dear Zelimir Gabelica,
You won Lot # 29 Khohar for $495
Allan will be home within a week. Please contact him by e-mail to make
arrangment for payment. You can pay by check or credit card. Please
 add
 shipping and handling cost.
 Best regards
 Iris Lang

Now Mike reports that this item was sold to Achim in room for $ 495
 (which
 is exactly my bid).
If Mike is corect, something really wrong here. Who is the winner ?
I dare hoping that Mike mixed the two winers but his statement
 seems so
 strong. Any thoughts?

Unless I missed many rules or facts (not excluded), things are far
 from
 being clear.
 Are there other cases ?

 Best,

 Zelimir

Mike and everyone else, I do not want to be in the
middle of this. I am running a business at the show. I
did Al and Achim a favor (I thought) by reporting
stolen pieces. I did not know the firestorm that would
follow. I have had at least 50 requests for prices
from 50 people, I don't have time to deal with these
emails, so by taking the last 30 minutes to posts the
hammer prices should release me from any more emails
to me. Others in the room can compare prices they
wrote down. the rest is between the interested parties
 and the Langs.

This should end my involvement in the dispute I hope.
Perhaps next year, people could just come to my room,
and pay the fixed price listed, it would be less
 painfull!

Hello Mike J., Mike B. and All,

I bought many hundred Riker style cases/boxes from Mike Jensen in the

the best regarding quality and price!...even incl. the relatively
high shipping costs from the US to Europe!

Cheers, Peter

Mike Jensen wrote:

Thanks for letting everyone else know that we sell the Riker style

is only a guess is that they sell the cases that are made in China as
they are below my cost! Well at least I hope so anyway.
My cases are made in the USA, though they are not the genuine Riker
cases. True Riker cases are also made in the USA and have a slightly
higher quality. Unfortunately they sell for almost double the price of
my cases. I also know the boxes I sell are of higher quality than the
ones mfg in China.
Hopefully that helps everyone make up their mind that for the price
and quality my cases are the best. :)
One more note I also sell them on Ebay but at a slightly higher price
due to Ebay fees. So if anyone ever wants some please order them
directly from my site and save a couple of dollars.

[meteorite-list] AD - MALI Meteorite Individuals for SALE

http://www.marmet-meteorites.com/id35.html

Hello All!

I just got a few meteorite individuals from a friend of mine who
spent the last couple of weeks in Mali.

A meteorite was reported to have fallen in the Chergach region in
Mali near the Algerian border in July 2007.

Complete details are not known yet, but it seems that more than 90 %
of the recovered meteorites are fragments with 60 % or less

fusion crust. I was able to pick the best 400 grams out of more than
10 kilos. So what you see here are very likely

some of the very best individuals of this new fall that will ever
come on the market.

Shipping: USA: $ 12.00 (1 week), Europe: $ 7.50 (2-4 days).

Nininger Moment #26 The Bondoc Philippine Meteorite Recovery Story

Hi AL and All,

great reading, AL, many thanks!

After reading your Nininger text, I remembered that I once bought a
20.6 g end piece of Bondoc.
I even has a small number, painted with white ink (by H.H.
Nininger?): (2)684.255
In the Catalog of Meteorites in the Coll. of ASU (Arizona State
University)

I found 550 kilos mentioned, the catalog number is 684...
The base of the ASU Meteorite Coll. is the Nininger Collection,
purchased in 1965.

Further infos most welcome!

Re: [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day / NWA 4024

2008-02-24 Thread Peter Marmet

Hello All,

http://www.rocksfromspace.org/February_24_2008.html

We have several pieces of very likely the same meteorite.
First we thought it might be paired with NWA 2680.
Further analyses at the Nat. Hist. Museum in Bern showed that this is
not the case:

Ni 8.58 und 7.82 % (NWA 2680: 13.7%)
Co 0.47 und 0.46 % (NWA 2680: 0.54%)
Cu 10 ppm (NWA 2680: 548 ppm)

Ni and Cu contents show that our material is very likely not paired
with NWA 2680.

Then we saw high res. picts of NWA 4024 and noticed that our material
looks visually identical to NWA 4024.

We sold several pieces on ebay as new iron last year.
Unfortunately the museum in Bern could not classify our material, so
we sent 25 grams to Dr. Greshake
in Berlin. To be sure that it is the same material as NWA 4024, he
suggested to make an O-Isotope analysis which he can't do
himself but scientifists in England he is working with. But it seems
that our material is right at the bottom of the

priority list of these English scientists - so we have to be patient.
As soon we have the results from England, we will inform you and put
some of our material on ebay again.

For those who already have bought from our material and are waiting
for the final resultsthank you for being so patient!

Peter

[meteorite-list] Genuine meteorite called tektite

2003-04-12 Thread Peter Marmet

Hi Howard and list,
it has never been my intention to give the impression that I might know
more than others.
What I find rather funny is the whole long list of guesses what a genuine
meteorite might be.
Howard, I hope you agree that a guenine meteorite and a tectite is
not the same thing. I agree that not all
questions regarding tectites are answered. But that's not the point.
The funniest part - for me at least - is the end of the explanation
where it says:IT MAY BE PART
OF A LARGE IMPACT METEOR THAT STRUCK THE EARTH AND FELL BACK.
Fell back to where? It almost seems that the writer of the text is
an extra terrestrial ;-)
Have a nice weekend!

[meteorite-list] Meteorites of the AMM

2003-07-22 Thread Peter Marmet
Hello list,
in a booklet I found a leaflet of the American Meteorite Museum
printed in 1946/47. Here Dr.H.H.Nininger tells his visitors
what they can expect to see : Among many others - 22 famous meteorites;
but he does not mention the names of these meteorites and I don't have
the answers myself, so I thought it might be funny/interesting -
as a kind of test/challenge for some of you - to name those meteorites.
Here are the descriptions of the meteorites you could see in 1946/47
visiting
the AMM:

1. A meteorite that fell through a house roof in Missouri during World
War I.

2. A portion of another that fell through a barn in Wisconsin five years
earlier.

3. Still another that crashed through a bedroom where two children were
asleep.

4. The only gold-bearing meteorite in America.

5. Diamonds in meteorites.

6. The largest mass ever found in connection with the world's greatest
meteorite crater.

7. A meteorite that was excavated in an encient ruin of the
cliff-dwellers. It was found wrapped in feather cloth and enclosed in a
stone cyst.

8. The world's largest known shower of stony meteorites—in Texas.

9. Stones from a shower which almost broke up a burial service near
Denver, Colo., in 1924.

10. Portions of recent falls—one as late as August, 1946.

11. 2000 stones which fell near Holbrook, Arizona, in 1912.

12. An implement fashioned from a meteorite by a Mexican blacksmith.

13. An Indian axe made from a meteorite— found in a ruin in New Mexico.

14. The only known copper meteorite in the world.

15. A group of meteorite hammer-stones from Central Mexico.

16. Two of the largest stony meteorites ever discovered.

17. A meteorite that was found doing service as a deadman in a fence
on a ranch in Texas.

18. Another one which did similar service in Kansas.

19. A meteorite which served as an anvil on a Mexican hacienda for 25
years.

20. A meteorite which served as a weight in a pork barrel for 23 years.

21. Another which was used on a kraut barrel for 23 years.

22. Several tons of meteorites gathered from the vicinity of the famous
Arizona crater.

P.S: I like # 1 to 3 (Greetings from PF ;-))

as a kind of test/challenge for some of you - to name those meteorites.

It was found wrapped in feather cloth and enclosed in a
  stone cyst.

  8. The world's largest known shower of stony meteorites-in Texas.

  9. Stones from a shower which almost broke up a burial service near
  Denver, Colo., in 1924.

  10. Portions of recent falls-one as late as August, 1946.

  11. 2000 stones which fell near Holbrook, Arizona, in 1912.

  12. An implement fashioned from a meteorite by a Mexican blacksmith.

  13. An Indian axe made from a meteorite- found in a ruin in New Mexico.

Any information will be appreciated.

[meteorite-list] (Sometimes) I hate to be a meteorite dealer!

2003-11-16 Thread Peter Marmet
Hi list,

last weekend I was in Liege, Belgium at the Mineral Show. Liege is a
very nice city with
very nice and friendly people - but that's not the point...

I had a very nice time there and once again I'd like to thank, Michel,
Claude and Zelimir (Gabelica) for
the fun and friendship I experienced there - but that's not the point...

I had a table there and was offering a few SA's, CD's and a few other
meteorites for sale. Despite the fact
that most people came because of minerals, a lot of them were very
intersted - but that's not the point...

I tried to do my best and was talking in French :-(( for 3 days. But
people were patient and I was quite
glad to tell them about the wonders of meteorites - but that's not the
point...

It was only the second time in my life that I was a «dealer» but I quite
liked it. So, Sunday early afternoon
about 6 or seven people were standing around my table when I noticed a
beautiful, tall young girl about 20
years of age who was patientely waiting until I stoped talking with some
other people - then she looked at me
and said: « I think I found a meteorite!». «Do you have it with you?», I
replied, hoping she would say no, but
she said: «Yes, it's right here in my bag, actually I found two
meteorites», and she showed me two very, very obvious
pieces of slag that she had found near her house. I tried to explain -
fighting with the French language - why
this were not metorites. She was listening for a while, took the pieces,
murmering: That's ok, that's ok and -
before I could close my mouth she had disappeared in the crowd.
If this had been a old, ugly, angry guy, ok, but this. I HATE IT
( and myself for being so dumb !!!)

Nobody warned me - so, to all newcomers in the business:
Take one of your SA's or CD's and show the difference and give her the
real one for free!!!
Like this, maybe you can win a meteorite lover instead of loosing one!

100

classified,a 2.0 gram slice of PLAINVIEW 1917,and finally a half stone
of
NANTAN 130.3 grams. All 7 are valued at $400.I changed my mind on the
sacramento mts.It seems that it is to hard to get.I am either looking
for
a piece of FAUCETT or EL HAMAMII.Please let me know if interested.

Hi Steve and list,
I guess of Gao, Juancheng, NWA and Nantan most list-members
have at few kilos
and are - at least - not in urgent need;-).
I don't have El Hamamii but a very nice big 6.74 g partslice
with crust of El Hammami that
I happily trade with your small 1.7 g of Barwell. Please
let me know if interested :-)
