BTW: A repair in 1993 and in 1999 was (partly) conducted by our Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier: STS-103 Discovery (19-27 December 1999) was an 8-day mission. The primary objective was the repair and servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), in particular the replacement of six gyroscopes which are necessary to meet the telescope`s very precise pointing requirement. During this spaceflight, Nicollier carried out his first spacewalk (EVA), of 08:10 hours duration, to install a new computer and one of three fine guidance sensors. [meteorite-list] New Mauretanian meteorite?
On behalf of Beda Hofmann, who's e-mails do not make it to the list at this time: Hello list Does anyone know about a recent fall in Mauretania? I have received a sample of a meteorite that supposedly fell on October 12, 2006. At first I did not believe the story, the stuff looks like El Hammami and probably is also an H. However, first results from low-level gamma-spectroscopy indicate it is really a recent fall (short-lived radionuclides are present). Re: [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day / NWA 4024
Hello All, http://www.rocksfromspace.org/February_24_2008.html We have several pieces of very likely the same meteorite. First we thought it might be paired with NWA 2680. Further analyses at the Nat. Hist. Museum in Bern showed that this is not the case: Ni 8.58 und 7.82 % (NWA 2680: 13.7%) Co 0.47 und 0.46 % (NWA 2680: 0.54%) Cu 10 ppm (NWA 2680: 548 ppm) Ni and Cu contents show that our material is very likely not paired with NWA 2680. Then we saw high res. picts of NWA 4024 and noticed that our material looks visually identical to NWA 4024. We sold several pieces on ebay as new iron last year. Unfortunately the museum in Bern could not classify our material, so we sent 25 grams to Dr. Greshake in Berlin. To be sure that it is the same material as NWA 4024, he suggested to make an O-Isotope analysis which he can't do himself but scientifists in England he is working with. But it seems that our material is right at the bottom of the priority list of these English scientists - so we have to be patient. As soon we have the results from England, we will inform you and put some of our material on ebay again. For those who already have bought from our material and are waiting for the final resultsthank you for being so patient! [meteorite-list] Genuine meteorite called tektite
Hi Howard and list, it has never been my intention to give the impression that I might know more than others. What I find rather funny is the whole long list of guesses what a genuine meteorite might be. Howard, I hope you agree that a guenine meteorite and a tectite is not the same thing. I agree that not all questions regarding tectites are answered. But that's not the point. The funniest part - for me at least - is the end of the explanation where it says:IT MAY BE PART OF A LARGE IMPACT METEOR THAT STRUCK THE EARTH AND FELL BACK. Fell back to where? [meteorite-list] Meteorites of the AMM
Hello list, in a booklet I found a leaflet of the American Meteorite Museum printed in 1946/47. Here Dr.H.H.Nininger tells his visitors what they can expect to see : Among many others - 22 famous meteorites; but he does not mention the names of these meteorites and I don't have the answers myself, so I thought it might be funny/interesting - as a kind of test/challenge for some of you - to name those meteorites. Here are the descriptions of the meteorites you could see in 1946/47 visiting the AMM: 1. A meteorite that fell through a house roof in Missouri during World War I. 2. A portion of another that fell through a barn in Wisconsin five years earlier. 3. Still another that crashed through a bedroom where two children were asleep. 4. The only gold-bearing meteorite in America. 5. Diamonds in meteorites. 6. The largest mass ever found in connection with the world's greatest meteorite crater. 7. A meteorite that was excavated in an encient ruin of the cliff-dwellers. It was found wrapped in feather cloth and enclosed in a stone cyst. 8. The world's largest known shower of stony meteoritesin Texas. 9. Stones from a shower which almost broke up a burial service near Denver, Colo., in 1924. 10. Portions of recent fallsone as late as August, 1946. 11. 2000 stones which fell near Holbrook, Arizona, in 1912. 12. An implement fashioned from a meteorite by a Mexican blacksmith. 13. An Indian axe made from a meteorite found in a ruin in New Mexico. 14. The only known copper meteorite in the world. 15. A group of meteorite hammer-stones from Central Mexico. 16. Two of the largest stony meteorites ever discovered. 17. A meteorite that was found doing service as a deadman in a fence on a ranch in Texas. 18. Another one which did similar service in Kansas. 19. [meteorite-list] (Sometimes) I hate to be a meteorite dealer!
Hi list, last weekend I was in Liege, Belgium at the Mineral Show. Liege is a very nice city with very nice and friendly people - but that's not the point... I had a very nice time there and once again I'd like to thank, Michel, Claude and Zelimir (Gabelica) for the fun and friendship I experienced there - but that's not the point... I had a table there and was offering a few SA's, CD's and a few other meteorites for sale. Despite the fact that most people came because of minerals, a lot of them were very intersted - but that's not the point... I tried to do my best and was talking in French :-(( for 3 days. But people were patient and I was quite glad to tell them about the wonders of meteorites - but that's not the point... It was only the second time in my life that I was a «dealer» but I quite liked it. So, Sunday early afternoon about 6 or seven people were standing around my table when I noticed a beautiful, tall young girl about 20 years of age who was patientely waiting until I stoped talking with some other people - then she looked at me and said: « I think I found a meteorite!». «Do you have it with you?», I replied, hoping she would say no, but she said: «Yes, it's right here in my bag, actually I found two meteorites», and she showed me two very, very obvious pieces of slag that she had found near her house. I tried to explain - fighting with the French language - why this were not metorites. She was listening for a while, took the pieces, murmering: That's ok, that's ok and - before I could close my mouth she had disappeared in the crowd. If this had been a old, ugly, angry guy, ok, but this. I HATE IT ( and myself for being so dumb !!!) Nobody warned me - so, to all newcomers in the business: Take one of your SA's or CD's and show the difference and give her the real one for free!!! Like this, maybe you can win a meteorite lover instead of loosing one! Peter Marmet, Bern __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello list, I bought twice from Steve: nice items, fast shipping, nothing negative - positive feedbacks. Peter Marmet Bernhard \"Rendelius\" Rems wrote: Ok, I think that it is time to say something positive about Steve. I have had about 20 transactions with him over the last 8 months, and there was only one problem that was corrected by him pretty fast. Other than that, all bids I won were exactly what he offered (and some GREAT deals amongst them *g*). Well, having said that - I don't understand him in some aspects. Having no pics with most of his auctions is pretty - well, strange, but that's up to him, I think. Some auctions are priced ridicoulosly high, others unbelievably low - again: this is up to him :-). I don't think that Steve is ripping others off on purpose, sometimes one COULD think that he doesn't really know what he does. But hey, there are only a few professional traders - Steve is, like me, just a collector, I'd say. If Steve made a mistake, I am sure he will react and correct it. As long as he does, everything's fine - don't you think so? Bernhard
