Dear List members

I am just dropping a line to everyone on the list to announce with regret that
this message will be my last contribution to the list.

I would sincerely like to thank everyone who has contacted me through the list,
or has replied to a message I have sent; whether good or bad. To use an old
cliché, being a subscriber to this list has been a "roller coaster ride". I
would also just like to pass on my best wishes to everyone on the list, their
families and friends and to wish you all the best for the future - whatever it
might bring.

Anyone who wishes to contact me for any reason can still use my normal e-mail

Thank you and good night!

Re: [meteorite-list] Large Fireball Over Scotland

2016-03-02 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Dear Ron and Everyone on the List

Some quite spectacular images were shown on the news here. As usual the
broadcasters never seem to get the facts quite right. From what I saw on TV, it
seemed to be a meteor or possibly a piece of space junk but what I am not sure
about from all that has been said, or written, is the exact
trajectory/direction of the fall so at present there is no indication if any
material actually fell to Earth. So I would say to any would-be hunters to hold
on until more information is available - also that part of the World is having
a lot of bad weather at the moment so traipsing around in a sparsely populated
area with poor weather, poor light and poor visibility is probably not
advisable.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3470708/The-flash-sky-turned-night-day-Comet-lights-horizon-Inverness-Edinburgh.html

The mystery 'meteor' that turned night into day: Giant fireball lights up the
horizon across Scotland and leaves onlookers terrified

* Thousands of people saw hug flash of light from Inverness to Edinburgh
* Light followed by rolling bang that some thought was satellite sonic boom
* Twitter lit up with speculation over the event, which made ground shake
* Police and the MoD said they were unaware of what could have caused it

By Maureen Sugden For The Scottish Daily Mail and Martin Robinson, Uk Chief
Reporter For Mailonline March 1, 2016

People from Inverness to Edinburgh reported a white, red or blue light that
swept across the skyline at around 6.45pm last night.

Witnesses described a rumbling noise lasting up to ten seconds before the pitch
black Scottish evening turned bright white and a fireball swept across the
horizon.

Kim Paterson of Brechin, Angus, tweeted: 'Proper massive rumble, ground
shaking, folk seeing the sky flash... is this the end?!'

Police Scotland said it received a number of 999 calls and confirmed it was
likely to be a meteor while the Met Office confirmed there had been no thunder
storms over Scotland.

There were suggestions it could have been a sonic boom from an aircraft or a
flare from a satellite.

There were no reports of aircraft in distress, while the MoD said it was
unaware of any events in the area - but would not comment on claims it was
linked to an aircraft.

Astronomers last night said it was most likely to be a meteor burning up as it
came into contact with the Earth's atmosphere.

The meteor is likely to have burned up but people are searching for debris.

On Twitter, Jake Logan said: 'Flash in the sky that lit up Braemar like
daylight, followed by a huge rolling bang like thunder that lasted 10 secs. Sky
is clear.'

John Poyner of Nethy Bridge, Inverness-shire, said: 'Anyone local just see a
bright flash lighting up whole sky. Not lightning. Reports of brilliant meteor
like object.'

A Police Scotland spokesman said they began receiving calls at around 6.55pm on
Monday evening.

She said: 'One told us the sky had been lit up with an object like a fireball.
Another caller said there was a very loud bang and others said the house shook.

'We know police in Inverness and in the south also received calls - it was seen
by people across Scotland.
'We have checked and been told it was likely to be a meteor shower.'

The bright white streak across the night sky sparked speculation on social
media whether it was an astronomical event, military activity or, perhaps more
far-fetched, linked to British astronaut Tim Peake.

Inverness SNP member Jackie Hendry tweeted: 'Did anyone else see that big white
flash in the sky ... I reckon it was Tim Peake.'

Madcow-paula tweeted: 'LOL ... some reckon @astro-timpeake dropped something
causing a big white flash in the sky over Scotland this evening!'

SteveCDT1986 tweeted:'Big white flash and some sort of meteor in the night sky.
Looked really close aswell. #endoftheworld #armageddon.'

@Colsuth tweeted: 'saw it here in Moray just as we were passing RAF Lossie.
Thought it was from there.'

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said they would not discuss if there was any
link to any operations in the area.

STV weather forecaster Sean Batty said: 'I've had lots of tweets from around
the North and East of the country this evening, with people reporting a loud
bang and a large flash in the sky. Most tweets have come from around
Perthshire, Angus, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

'There are no thunderstorms being reported anywhere in Scotland this evening,
therefore this is not due to a flash of lightning. My

Re: [meteorite-list] China Now Hosts The World's Largest Gem and Mineral Show

2016-01-25 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Dear List members

I would be very wary of the figures quoted here. As someone on the list has
already mentioned, the shows at Changsha (now gone forever), Chenzhou and
elsewhere are largely attended by locals and students bussed in by the Chinese
government to artificially boost numbers. A number of prominent mineral dealers
that I know, who have the knowledge and experience of mineral shows World-wide,
are all very scathing about the Chinese shows. It may well be that once these
shows have been running for a number of years (like Tucson and Munich) then
thinks will settle down and trust between seller and buyer may eventually be
built up.

My recent experiences of trying to get the Chinese to organise an international
mineralogy conference have proved to be one of the most frustrating periods of
my professional life. China may have made many great strides in some fields,
but are hide-bound by politics. The result of all this is that the conference
will probably not go ahead. Poor organisation and political
interference/favouritism are among the main culprits.

I am a relative Tucson newbie (this will be my fifth visit), and the city can
be a difficult place to reach from Scotland, but it is still (along with
Munich) the place to go to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and most
importantly see some great specimens! I would not be too worried about
attendance figures. The main show, where I have my small display, is still
pretty busy on all the days that it is open and the hotels and smaller shows
around the city still seem to attract a lot of people. Long may it continue.

Hope to see a few of you there.

Dear List Members,

I was shocked to hear that the Tucson Gem and Mineral show is no longer the
world's largest. It looks like China is in first place with attendance figures
of over 380,000 for a four day event in 2015 compared to less than
40,000 for Tucson.

http://www.friendsofmineralogy.org/newsletters/2015_Jul.pdf

Maybe I should attend this year to add support for this American show that has
been running since 1955 while the Chinese show has only existed for a mere 3
years.

Re: [meteorite-list] Guns made of meteorite: Price tag $1 million

2016-01-15 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Dear Tommy and All

I will be interested to see the reaction of listees to this article. A few
years ago I posted a small "flyer" for the work of an artist who had taken a
piece of Campo, made a mould of it, melted the meteorite then cast it in the
mould she had made earlier and put it on display in an exhibition of her work.
This piece of news generated a great deal of, mainly negative, comment on the
list. Can someone point out to me how this use of a meteorite, to make a
weapon, is different (for better or worse) to the artwork my friend created?

Not quite everyone everywhere, John. It's often easy to assume the whole world
does everything like we do, but there are a multitude of cultures and belief
systems to take into account. Here's a small list of countries and people who
do not follow the Gregorian New Year (from
wikipedia):

Ethiopian New Year called Enkutatash. It is celebrated on September 11
(September 12 in leap years).

The Odunde Festival is also called the "African New Year" is celebrated in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States on the second Sunday of June.

Cambodian New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey) is celebrated on April 13 or April 14.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is the
first day of the lunar calendar and is corrected for the solar every three
years.

Korean New Year, called Seollal, is the first day of the lunar calendar.

Thai New Year is celebrated on April 13 or April 14 and is called Songkran in
the local language.

Vietnamese New Year normally falls between 20 January and 20 February.

In the Gwaun Valley, Pembrokeshire, Wales the new year is celebrated on January
13, based on the Julian calendar.

Hijri New Year in the Islamic culture is also known as Islamic new year is the
day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year. New Year moves
from year to year because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar.

Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in Iranian
calendar. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, falls during September or October.

Hindu in Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Nepal, Orissa, Punjab and Tamil Nadu celebrate
the new year when the Sun enters Aries on the Hindu calendar. This is normally
on April 14 or April 15.

Unlike most other calendar systems in India, the New Year's Day on the
Malayalam Calendar is not based on any astronomical event. It is just the first
day of the first of the twelve months on the Malayalam Calendar.

The Sikh New Year is celebrated as per the Nanakshahi calendar. The epoch of
this calendar is the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak in 1469. New
Year's Day falls annually on what is March 14 in the Gregorian Western calendar.

Sinhalese New Year is celebrated in Sri Lankan culture predominantly by the Sri
Lankan Sinhalese, while the Tamil New Year on the same day is celebrated by Sri
Lankan Tamils. The Sinhalese New Year marks the end of harvest season, by the
month of Bak (April) between April 13 and April 14.

Telugu New Year (Ugadi), Kannada New Year (Yugadi) is celebrated in March
(generally), April (occasionally).

Globally yours,
Michael in so. Cal.

Re: [meteorite-list] Social media might destroy meteorite collecting and selling!

2015-07-06 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Shawn

I agree with you to a very large extent. The number of fakes and
meteorwrongs appearing online, and through public enquiries to the museum,
does seem to be increasing. In the last couple of weeks I have seen, or dealt
with about half a dozen of them. Whether or not this can be blamed on social
media I don't know. Yes, it does spread awareness of meteorites and increases
their visibility. If the result of that is someone contacting me at the museum
with an enquiry, then I am more than happy to deal with that in a courteous,
open, honest and professional way. My concern is that, having given a negative
answer (and they almost without question are) to an enquiry about a possible
meteorite, I (or any curator/collector) become the subject of a vicious
trolling campaign and find that our professional (and sometime personal)
reputation is brought into question for no other reason than we gave the
wrong answer.

Social media is a powerful tool. I would say that it is mostly benign, even
trivial, in the overwhelming number of cases. But just occasionally things do
get out of hand.

Hello Listers

I have noticed an explosion of people insisting they have found a meteorite
popping up everywhere on FB. And now ebay is having an influx of fakes being
offered on there. Couple years ago it wasnt that often you would see fakes on
there, but now its a common theme. I mean people think that its a common
occurrence with finding a meteorite, and now they come infused with gold. What
should we do? Today I saw 5 fake meteorites being sold on ebay within a couple
minutes when I do my ebay search to see whats been posted recently to ebay,
that's kinda scary and some of them have bids. I noticed that the more
meteorite groups that keep popping up on FB the more people think they have a
meteorite and insist its real. These social media groups are fragmenting the
core group of meteorites collectors, sellers, and dealers. Couple years ago MC
was buzzing, but now its quite on here. Also on FB people are lazy and just hit
like LOL and say nothing cause they have to read the next post and like tha
 t. Don't get me wrong I dig FB but I think we need to rethink these social
media outlets and start chatting more on MC. :)

Any questions, please email him directly, but if you do not get an answer, do

ENSISHEIM “METEORITE 2015” NEWS
(March 30, 2015)

Dear Meteorite-Central List, IMCA members and all meteorite friends,

On March 28, Anne Black wrote:
---
To answer Pierre-Marie, and anyone who might be worried, I checked with the
Ensisheim team, everything is getting prepared as usual, no problems at all.
Zelimir is very busy, traveling a lot and not always within sight of a
computer, but no worries.

The Ensisheim Show will happen as usual. This year: From June 19 to 21.
See you there.

Anne was perfectly right and she pertinently summarized the facts: very busy
times, frequent travelling, scarce computer connections, that was it.

However, there was another major factor that prevented me from officially
giving you the 2015 show news. It was linked to a series of uncertainties
regarding the real possibility for us to even be able to continue to organize
the event!

All started with a long time decision of Jean-Marie Blosser to retire from the
head of the brotherhood.
His decision was soon followed by the consequent withdrawal of the other 3
permanent members of the brotherhood Grand Council (except myself) and
therefore by the predictable disappearance of the “St George Brotherhood of the
Ensisheim Meteorite Guardians” during the course of 2015.
As a logical consequence, the very continuation to organize the Ensisheim
Meteorite Show, at least under the auspices of the brotherhood, had to be
questioned.

Fortunately, the Meteorite belongs to the Ensisheim City Hall authorities.
When I contacted the city mayor to inquire whether they wish to continue to
organize the meteorite shows in his city, he fully agreed that we rapidly meet.
And indeed, we promptly agreed to decide that “the show MUST go on”!

It took us another few weeks to embody the decision by rebuilding a new team,
by envisaging a new logistics strategy and by setting up a few provisional new
rules for this forthcoming 2015 show edition, before we create a new
brotherhood (or any other kind of official association) for 2016 and the years
to come.

Now that everything is clarified again, I dare to apologize for being so late
in providing show news and in replying only now to those who inquired for show
details or who wanted to make sure their usual tables are duly reserved
(Pierre-Marie in particular).

Please find here down preliminary news concerning this “a little special” 16th
edition of our meteorite show “Ensisheim-Meteorite 2015”.

--
When compared to the last year’s show editions, the changes are very minor.

The place (Regency Palace in Ensisheim), the dates (the week preceding the Ste
Marie show, namely from Friday June 19 to Sunday June 21, 2015), as well as the
usual hall table arrangements remain unchanged.

The total number of dealer tables remains limited to 59 (53 “regular” and 6
“window-tables” in the consignment room). All tables are equal in size (160 x
80 cm). Price per table (not per meter), as in 2015, namely: 1 table = 155
euro; 2 tables = 300 euro; 3 tables = 430 euro; 4 tables = 560 euro….)

All past dealers/guests have full priority to reserve their last year table(s).
Those who did not come last year (2014) had lost their priority and should be
considered as “newcomers”.

For the 2015 booking, we encourage our regular guests to do that ASAP,
preferably before the end of April 2015 (slightly flexible deadline). However,
if you already had reserved “implicitly” or “think that you have reserved”,
please apply again and confirm (or cancel) your table. This is needed so as to
fit the new 2015 administrative requirements.

The organizers will attribute to the newcomers the layout of places within any
of the 3 halls in the most appropriate way so as to meet as many wishes as
possible. Note that the 3 halls are all equivalent, as the public must

Thanks for this. I have seen this particular cartoon, and some similar ones,
before. It doesn't quite respond to what I said below, dealing as it does with
the notion of art as commodity. It is a kind of short, cartoon version of the
story of The Emperor's New Clothes. It does however express the way I
personally feel about the art business (for that is what it surely is today) in
that the value of any piece often seems to be in inverse proportion to its
artistic merit (if any) and reflects what only a few, select people define as
cutting edge or important. Thereby sending its valuation through the roof,
while other artists struggle to survive. In the longer term, art critics,
dealers and writers (as well as the public) will assess things differently
based on the cultural milieu of the time. After all, in 1930's Germany, Hitler
and the Nazi Party became the de facto arbiters of taste condemning many
artists and their work (in all the fields of artist endeavour) as entartete Ku
nst (degenerate art) and confining their work to the bonfire and forcing the
artists to comply or to flee. We now consider the work of these artists,
musicians and writers as very important - maybe in a hundred years we will take
a different view.

2014-07-31 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Dear Listoids

I make no claim to be an expert on contemporary art/artists, nevertheless I
have worked with a number of artists over the last few years in my role as a
mineral curator for the National Museums and this has allowed me to get a
glimpse of the way different artists devise, plan and execute their works. I
haven't had the pleasure of working with Katie, but I do know her and I have
met her and we have had some long discussions about meteorites and she does
feature meteorites and space in her work a lot. So I feel I ought to give my
angle on this as well as try and explain her work on the Campo using her own
words.

The original concept was formulated in around 2010/11 and the finished cast was
exhibited in London in 2012. At about that time she gave an interview and the
following quote is lifted directly from the published article:

...The artist domesticates the cosmos' immensity: she gives the unfathomable a
human scale, putting it within our reach. The cast meteorite will likely be
placed on Exhibition Road (close to the Natural History Museum) in a discrete
place, where people can sit around it and be able to touch it, she says. Most
meteorites have been travelling around space for over four and a half billion
years. They are older than the Earth and are the oldest objects on Earth. I
like the idea of this vast cosmic history embedded inside them. Melting a
meteorite and reforming it is a little bit like compressing and merging
together these layers of time, history and space. Eventually I would like to
send the meteorite back into Space, though that might not be for many years.

Well the many years have now past and Katie has send the recast meteorite into
space.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hello everybody,

Yes, today is my birthday, and it is an important one, since I am changing
decade. Yes, I am 70 today, scary but true.
So to celebrate my birthday, here is a very exceptional sale: anything you buy
(and pay) today, you will pay only 70% of the price.
Well. since half of today is already gone, I'll give you 48 hours to
take advantage of this 70% sale. (Careful! I did not say 70% off, I did say
you pay 70% of the price, so if something is priced at $100, you pay only $70.
I am getting old but not senile! ;-) .)

As usual, first wrote, first served.
And tell me if you have any questions.
Thanks.

Re: [meteorite-list] travel to Ensisheim

2014-06-20 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Hello Karen

Hope I am not too late. I was away on fieldwork in Devon and Cornwall. There
are a number of options for getting to Ensisheim from Mulhouse. Firstly there
is a local bus service from the station in Mulhouse to Ensishem. But it is very
infrequent and only runs during the day, nothing after 5:00pm. Secondly you
could check with any of the other dealers, delegates or visitors to see if they
could give you a lift - it does sometimes work! Lastly there is the taxi which
is most reliable and runs at all hours. However a taxi from Mulhouse to
Ensisheim will cost around €60, or it did the last time I was there in 2011.

Hope this helps

Hi All,

I'll be traveling from Frankfurt airport to Mulhouse by train. There is no
train to Ensisheim. Does anybody know if there is a bus or so going from
Mulhouse to Ensisheim? I guess, I could take a cab Š.

Thanks!

[meteorite-list] Strathmore Meteorite Centenary

2014-05-19 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Hello Listees (Repost)

2017 marks the Centenary of the Strathmore meteorite fall; Scotland's biggest.
To commemorate this occasion, I am at the planning stage of an exhibition which
will take place in the National Museums Scotland during that year. Outline
permission had already been given and once I have major project on which I am
currently extremely busy out of the way, I will be ramping up my efforts. In
this modern digital, globalised age I am going to try a new approach in my
search for ideas, suggestions or offers of information or objects which might
help to extend the scope of the display.

At the moment, as well as a case featuring the re-uniting of the four main
fragments of the Strathmore fall, I am looking at cases which will look at
other Scottish and possibly UK/Irish meteorites, and also maybe taking a
slightly different angle by looking at meteoritic or related material that has
been used for other purposes which could include tools, jewellery and so on.

Therefore, I am sending this e-mail out to the list to attempt a sort of crowd
sourcing exercise to see what comes up. Please be assured that, in terms of
objects, I am not looking for permanent donations to the collections (though
that would be nice) but loans. I will listen to all offers and all e-mails will
be answered. There is no urgency at the moment, but I will be looking to start
firming up on my ideas as soon as possible.

Regards

Re: [meteorite-list] book about french meteorites / bad news

2014-05-13 Thread Peter Davidson via Meteorite-list
Good Morning Pierre-Marie

This is sad news indeed, and very frustrating since it is due to a legal
impediment and not a comment on the strength and quality of the research. Some
of my colleagues have suggested self-publishing which is a good idea, but if
you are prevented by your contract then you will still run into major legal
problems. I assume there is no way to negotiate yourself out of this contract
without incurring substantial costs - my daughter is a lawyer and I know from
her the difficulty and cost of these types of negotiation. Is there any
possibility of using a second or co-author? If your contract specifies you and
you alone as author, then maybe a co-author can help to circumvent this
problem. Have a talk with your own lawyer and see what they say.

Bon chance!

Hello everybody,

my former editor doesn't believe to the potential of a new book about french
meteorites so I decided to write a new one.

As it's on the same subject, my previous contract doesn't allow me to publish
it so sadly, there won't be a new book about french meteorites from me unless I
find a solution but chances are near zero.

Sorry about that.
