"A team led by Doris Arzoumanian at the National Astronomical Observatory of
Japan proposed a new explanation of how the Solar System acquired the amount of
isotopes measured in meteorites while surviving the supernova shock. Stars form
in large groups called clusters inside giant clouds of molecular gas. These
molecular clouds are filamentary. Small stars like the Sun usually form along
the filaments and large stars, which will explode in a supernova, usually form
at the hubs where multiple filaments cross."

Inclusions (CAIs) believed to have formed in the protoplanetary disk during the

Isotopic studies of CAIs found in meteorites show the presence of several
short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) such as 26Al that provides constraints on the
formation timescales and processes of the CAIs and on the amount and timescale
of newly injected material as a result of feedback from neighboring high-mass

[meteorite-list] CNEOS1 2014-01-08 hunt in P.N.G. Harvard physicist Avi Loeb is organizing a $1.5 million expedition

A Harvard Physicist Is Racing to Prove This Meteorite Is an Alien Probe
March 23, 2023

The world’s top alien hunter is about to embark on his most ambitious—and
potentially history-making—mission yet. Harvard physicist Avi Loeb is
organizing a $1.5-million expedition to Papua New Guinea to search for
fragments of a very strange meteorite that impacted just off the coast of the
Pacific nation in 2014.

There’s compelling evidence that the half-meter-wide meteorite, called CNEOS1
2014-01-08, traveled from outside our solar system. And that it’s made of
extremely hard rock or metal—a material that’s hard and tough enough to prove
the meteorite isn’t a meteorite at all. Maybe it’s an alien probe.

It’s a long-shot effort. After years of work, Loeb and his team have, with a
big assist from the U.S. military, narrowed down CNEOS1 2014-01-08’s likely
impact zone to a square kilometer of the ocean floor, nearly two kilometers
underwater. But the fragments themselves are probably just a few millimeters in
size. It’s worse than looking for a needle in a haystack. Loeb is basically
preparing to look for big sand in a square-kilometer patch of small sand.

Hi list,

Recently I published a new meteorite book, aimed toward kids but great
for all ages, it's "50 State Unofficial Meteorites!"

I've previously written 50 State Fossils and 50 State Gems and
Minerals, which cover official US state symbols that are fossils,
gems, or minerals. The current book is about meteorites in each state
(or at least those that have documented meteorites) and tells stories
of the noteworthy specimens from those states which could be nominated
to be official state symbols. Also has plenty of easy-to-digest
science and history about meteorites!

The book has plenty of pictures, some from me but most are from the
meteorite community (and I thank everyone who contributed and helped!)

You can get the book on Amazon here or from you local bookstore:

Or if you want a signed copy email me at devoniande...@gmail.com and

Also here's a review from Martin Horejsi:

 Hello Everyone,

The May issue of Meteorite Times is now up.  It's hard to believe that
this is our 20 year anniversary issue.  Our first issue was in April
2002 back when Meteorite Times was monthly. We'd like to give a special
thank you to all of the writers over the years who have contributed
articles to Meteorite Times. And a special thank you to Martin Horejsi,
James Tobin, John Kashuba, and Mitch Noda for their continued article
support.

With the May issue we have a new web hosting company providing better
performance and as our old template was not being supported anymore I
have created a new template using Elementor with an updated look but
same layout functionality. If anyone notices any errors or strange
behavior please contact me off list.

Enjoy!

[meteorite-list] Plague of fake Pallasite from China

2022-05-01 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
Dear List,
This is relative new crap being made in China a being sold as, search "Kenyan
Pallasite Golden Phoenix olive" .
US seller in Payson, AZ
https://www.ebay.com/sch/Meteorites-Tektites/3239/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=paulmariz

What can YOU do. Report the item to ebay- the report button is below the body
of the listing on the right side of the screen. Only report when you can back
up your claim!

Chinese listings-
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1312&_nkw=kenyan+pallasite+olive+meteorite

If you should buy any thing that is advertised as a meteorite you can get you
money back and usually keep the rock/crap; but it involves some work and
knowledge on your side.

NOTE- Do NOT file a claim if you are not able to back up your claim that it is
fake; do not buy it.

IF not a meteorite-
Click- Contact seller
Item not as described
Request a refund
Request a shipping lable cost to be paid by seller.

There are other steps that must be taken; check ebay. Waiting period to file a
claim, waiting period to receive refund,
-
Seller if in China usually cannot provide return shipping label- if not, full
refund and you keep the specimen. It usually requires contacting EBAY to get
refund. DO NOT PAY FOR Meteorwrongs unless labeled as such; it is your own
fault for buying a meteorwrong in this case.

There is a ton of multi-colored moldavite along with the fake green stuff. If
it is coming from China or India you have a 99.99 percent chance of it being
fake. The Indian glass is made in Jaipur and the fake Chinese Moldavite likely
made in Guangdong. China's other glass making center is in Shantung.
Likely there is fake very high technique Moldavite being made in Bali,
Indonesia, as they also have a thriving well made hand glass industry.

Best of luck and avoid the fakes,
Dirk Ross

[meteorite-list] Fw: Not an answer they like

2021-03-19 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
List,
Out of over the 200-plus people that I have helped.
Two had found meteorites and I verified them in person.
Two other kept sending me wrongs, but were willing to learn and listen;
The one finally a piece of the Old Woman and Gold Basin meteorite.
The second, no only did he find a meteorite, but his wife and son each found
OCs.

Plenty of nut-jobs out there but sometime some of the persons contacting me
have paid their dues and listened, studied and spent the time to finally have
success.
The "believers" will never take advice and always think that they have
something RARE.  I just explain the I cannot help a "believer" and ask them not
to call me again.

Batting 4/200.

PS' Save your time and ask them to do some study and look for the most common
instead of rare mets

Re: [meteorite-list] Neutralizing Hydrazine?

2018-03-22 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
Ed and List,

E.P. Grondine asks,

"So how do you neutralize hydrazine?"

The answer to your first question about neutralizing hydrazine see below ( I
personally think that this is way to DANGEROUS for any meteorite hunters to be
doing and should be left to military or properly trained HAZMAT team.).

Safety and Handling of Hydrazine - Defense Technical Information ...
dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/p005339.pdf
by DK Simpson - ‎1986 - ‎Cited by 2 - ‎Related articles
water and will eventually consume all of the hydrazine, producing only nitrogen
and water. Use of a dilute oxidizer solution will speed up the neutralization
reaction. An aqueous solution (5% or less) of sodium hypochlorite or calcium
hypochlorite (prepared from swimming pool dry chlorinator) or dilute hydrogen
peroxide.

E.P.'s second question-
"Anything else to be wary of?" There may be radioactive material aboard the
craft. It would be a good idea to use a Geiger Counter to check for safety
prior to handling any material IF found.

The likelihood of any civilians getting anywhere near materials from
Tiangong-1 as slim as any fall site on land will be off limits if it located.

BTW- Any and All of Tiangong-1 is property of the People's Republic of China
and under international law must be returned to China if found, i.e. if you
find something "significant" you will likely be met by U.S. Marshalls, XYZ,
etc. and forced to return the "finds".

Hi all -

With Tiangong comind down, is anyone here planning to hunt for pieces?

Usually, the spacecraft pieces hunters find have been exposed to water for a
long time,
but this time that will not be the case, assuming that Tiangong comes down in a
searchable area.

So how do you neutralize hydrazine? Anything else to be wary of?

good hunting, all,

E.P.

Mr. John Higgins is a very honorable meteorite dealer. He would not lie about

You, a thief, admitted by yourself, to stealing by claiming a pairing number to

have it studied and the grams donated as a type specimen.

Dear John/Adam/List,

I am greatly saddened to be dragged into what I can only assume is
'politically' motivated debate.
For my part, I have never heard of this 3KG of Black Beauty, and it is
frankly farcical to suggest I am part of a conspiracy to keep this off
market.
The linking of my few grams, as evidence of a secret cache of Black Beauty
is at best delusional.

I have been dealing in meteorites for a number of years and recently on ebay
where my feedback is 99 percent positive (only negative was someone wanted a
certificate of authenticity that was never mentioned in the listing).

My 3g (please note not KG) of BB came from hunters I have known for years
and I trust absolutely. The material was found in November 2017 in the Sbita
area " known strewn field of black beauty" and the balance of the parcel was
sold to a dealer in Belgium.

As with the majority of non NWA XXX meteorites I sell, a fragment of my
material was recently sent to the LFP lab in Germany for analysis (not
classification) and should it prove to be anything other than BB, I would
give a full refund. Frankly, given my knowledge and trust of the hunters,
the probability that they have defrauded me is zero.

This list has seen the drama of bad US dealers, bad Moroccan dealers, family
rifts and petty squabbles played out ad-nauseum. However, its use to damage
people who are doing their absolute best to build a good business is in my
opinion at least, immensely sad and nothing more than playground bullying.

I have many customers who have purchased multiple from me and several have
become genuine friends, it is that aspect of this community which I love,
sadly there is a Janus Face to this community.

John Higgins is angry with me for selling pieces of the Tindouf, Algerian
Lunar and calling them 'paired NWA 10265' - which is his classification for
this material. There is zero debate my material is the Algerian Lunar but I
simply used one of the many many classification numbers associated with it.
Hands up, I should have just called it Tindouf, Algerian Lunar, but it is
utterly wrong to suggest this was an attempt to defraud anyone. Claiming a
specific classification of the same material is more 'special' than all the
generic Tindouf material it all represents, is a far greater
misrepresentation in my opinion.

I am neither part of an evil conspiracy to keep BB off the market or a bad
player, I just am trying to make a living and build a long term client business
in a field I love.

Some more terrestrial breccia lacking any kind of fusion crust or

flight-markings being added to the huge pile being sold as lunar:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lunar-Meteorite-Breccia-37g/263346210852?hash=item3d50a84824:g:zzwAAOSwEEBaGyPN

This demonstrates the need to have every piece tested and made official.

To me it is obvious this is not a lunar specimen but it is close enough

to fool many. Remember, a COA is worthless without official scientific

data to back it up. A recent national auction demonstrated that there

is simply no secondary market for undocumented, untested and unofficial

material.

Material like this only undermines collector confidence which is at an

all time low right now because of the amount of undocumented crap being

dumped onto the market. Fake Martian material is making a comeback as well.

Tommy and List,

Meteorite Burning Hoax and Other Meteor/Meteorite Related Hoaxes a Short History

Unfortunately this crap hoax has been picked up by The Daily Mail UK, The Sun
UK, Metro UK and is making its way into the US press as fact. This type of
Sterno burning hoax was first used in Israel and reported as a burning
meteorite on a beach in Bat Yam in April 2010. So much for the press doing any
verification of the story prior to printing.

We have had the Latvia Telephone Co. crater hoax 2009 (done for a publicity
stunt), the German boy 2009 and copy-cat children getting hit by meteorites,
the Xinjiang China impact crater hoax (bomb crater) the India Engineering
College "Meteorite" Killing 2016 (buried TNT or other explosive in the campus
of the college),
Nicaragua Impact Crater on an airbase 2014 (a bomb or explosive likely
accidentally released by an aircraft) and more in the past.

There have been numerous contrails reported as meteor trails, and faked
meteor videos from Mexico, Oklahoma City and others.

The media in the past have also claimed forest fires in Colorado and
Australia were the result of meteorite impact.

One man in the US has written that the Great Chicago Fire was caused by a
meteorite strike.

Re: [meteorite-list] witnessed fallen "Meteorite "interesting human behavior observed original powwow

2017-03-07 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
Adam,    After numerous experiments on desert dry lakes in California and
Nevada with tennis shoes and other attachments on hooves it was decided
emissions exceeded standards and a different exhaust system with venting
attached to eliminate breaks of wind.     We have now installed cattle guards
and fencing to prevent herding.  I sincerely hope that this helps answer your
deep open concerns.  It seems that no meteorites were actually harmed by either
hotdogs or hamburgers, even though there was beef on the hoof.   To keep this
story on the safe side of telling in California, no actual cattle were harmed
in this study.  AND Meanwhile the Cow continues to wonder aimlessly in
Colorado.
Dirk Ross...Tokyo

Interesting and to think one List member wants all cattle banned from public
lands even though most states in the west are open range.  I guess open
range, non steroid or non-antibiotic fed, live stock is more helpful than
being converted to hotdogs and hamburgers.

Re: [meteorite-list] witnessed fallen "Meteorite "interesting human behavior observed original powwow

2017-03-06 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
Adam,
After numerous experiments on desert dry lakes in California and Nevada with
tennis shoes and other attachments on hooves it was decided emissions exceeded
standards and a different exhaust system with venting attached to eliminate
breaks of wind.
We have now installed cattle guards and fencing to prevent herding.
I sincerely hope that this helps answer your deep open concerns. It seems
that no meteorites were actually harmed by either hotdogs or hamburgers, even
though there was beef on the hoof.
To keep this story on the safe side of telling in California, no actual
cattle were harmed in this study. AND Meanwhile the Cow continues to wonder
aimlessly in Colorado.

[meteorite-list] Father of Meteor Allsky Networks, Richard Spalding, R.I.P.

2017-02-10 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
List,
Most of this below was written by Tom Dorman after I delivered the news to
him. I have edited it slightly.

Just a sad note we heard this morning of the passing last night of Dick
Spalding (Sandia National Laboratories) who was instrumental in starting the
setting up and running of meteor fireball all sky camera Systems in the U.S.
but also in other countries around the world.

Fireball all sky camera system can now be bought off the shelf these days but
back in the 1990's Dick was giving (many were paid for out of his own monies)
the systems to willing amateurs such as the late Jim Gamble and myself who run
the El Paso Fireball meteor camera in support of the North America fireball
network.

These early cameras system help give a better understanding of meteors,
fireball events and meteor showers and their origins. Some of the early
fireball cameras that Dick gave out to many amateurs were through DOD grants.

Can say we were lucky to have known the man and was able to break bread with
Dick. Dick gave graciously of his time and always was willing to answer
questions from even lowly amateurs such as our self.

Our condolences and thoughts go out to his wife, family and those who worked
with Dick for many years at Sandia National Laboratories.

God's speed Dick you will be missed. Dick you were a quiet treasure of our
nation. Dick thank you for your service.

Thank you my friend. I am have greatful to have spent several hours and more
than 5 years of knowing you and working with you. Love, Dirk

Regards, Tom Dorman and Dirk Ross

2016-10-04 Thread drtanuki via Meteorite-list
Elton and Tommy, Elton I think that you hit the nail on the head. I have no
evidence that any of the images that they used for their tv news were of the
event and yes the one footage segment that they replayed was of a recycled jet
contrail (also used in the past week for the UK event). Their impact crater
was a large pothole/ small sinkhole in the highway.

Because they are ultimately clueless, "too dumb to get a real job--
'journalist"; so used to distorting the world they correctly assume that 99.9%
of the viewers will believe what they are told to believe. " Yeah, Bishar this
looks like a meteor trail to me wink wink, lets use it and get an early lunch!"

Why do they show a jet with Sun lit contrails during the report???
