Harvard physicist Avi Loeb is organizing a $1.5-million expedition to Papua New Guinea to search for fragments of a very strange meteorite that impacted just off the coast of the Pacific nation in 2014. There’s compelling evidence that the half-meter-wide meteorite, called CNEOS1 2014-01-08, traveled from outside our solar system. And that it’s made of extremely hard rock or metal—a material that’s hard and tough enough to prove the meteorite isn’t a meteorite at all. Maybe it’s an alien probe. It’s a long-shot effort. After years of work, Loeb and his team have, with a big assist from the U.S. military, narrowed down CNEOS1 2014-01-08’s likely impact zone to a square kilometer of the ocean floor, nearly two kilometers underwater. But the fragments themselves are probably just a few millimeters in size. It’s worse than looking for a needle in a haystack. Loeb is basically preparing to look for big sand in a square-kilometer patch of small sand. more __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist2.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Neutralizing Hydrazine?
Ed and List, E.P. Grondine asks, "So how do you neutralize hydrazine?" The answer to your first question about neutralizing hydrazine see below ( I personally think that this is way to DANGEROUS for any meteorite hunters to be doing and should be left to military or properly trained HAZMAT team.). Safety and Handling of Hydrazine - Defense Technical Information ... dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/p005339.pdf by DK Simpson - 1986 - Cited by 2 - Related articles water and will eventually consume all of the hydrazine, producing only nitrogen and water. Use of a dilute oxidizer solution will speed up the neutralization reaction. An aqueous solution (5% or less) of sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite (prepared from swimming pool dry chlorinator) or dilute hydrogen peroxide. E.P.'s second question- "Anything else to be wary of?" There may be radioactive material aboard the craft. It would be a good idea to use a Geiger Counter to check for safety prior to handling any material IF found. The likelihood of any civilians getting anywhere near materials from Tiangong-1 as slim as any fall site on land will be off limits if it located. BTW- Any and All of Tiangong-1 is property of the People's Republic of China and under international law must be returned to China if found, i.e. if you find something "significant" you will likely be met by U.S. Marshalls, XYZ, etc. and forced to return the "finds". Dirk Ross...Tokyo From: nourddine azelmat via Meteorite-listTo: "meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com" Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2018 5:48 AM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Questions About NWA 7034, Dear John/Adam/List, I am greatly saddened to be dragged into what I can only assume is 'politically' motivated debate. For my part, I have never heard of this 3KG of Black Beauty, and it is frankly farcical to suggest I am part of a conspiracy to keep this off market. The linking of my few grams, as evidence of a secret cache of Black Beauty is at best delusional. I have been dealing in meteorites for a number of years and recently on ebay where my feedback is 99 percent positive (only negative was someone wanted a certificate of authenticity that was never mentioned in the listing). My 3g (please note not KG) of BB came from hunters I have known for years and I trust absolutely. The material was found in November 2017 in the Sbita area " known strewn field of black beauty" and the balance of the parcel was sold to a dealer in Belgium. As with the majority of non NWA XXX meteorites I sell, a fragment of my material was recently sent to the LFP lab in Germany for analysis (not classification) and should it prove to be anything other than BB, I would give a full refund. Frankly, given my knowledge and trust of the hunters, the probability that they have defrauded me is zero. This list has seen the drama of bad US dealers, bad Moroccan dealers, family rifts and petty squabbles played out ad-nauseum. However, its use to damage people who are doing their absolute best to build a good business is in my opinion at least, immensely sad and nothing more than playground bullying. I have many customers who have purchased multiple from me and several have become genuine friends, it is that aspect of this community which I love, sadly there is a Janus Face to this community. John Higgins is angry with me for selling pieces of the Tindouf, Algerian Lunar and calling them 'paired NWA 10265' - which is his classification for this material. There is zero debate my material is the Algerian Lunar but I simply used one of the many many classification numbers associated with it. Hands up, I should have just called it Tindouf, Algerian Lunar, but it is utterly wrong to suggest this was an attempt to defraud anyone. Claiming a specific classification of the same material is more 'special' than all the generic Tindouf material it all represents, is a far greater misrepresentation in my opinion. I am neither part of an evil conspiracy to keep BB off the market or a bad player, I just am trying to make a living and build a long term client business in a field I love. __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

To me it is obvious this is not a lunar specimen but it is close enough to fool many. Remember, a COA is worthless without official scientific data to back it up. A recent national auction demonstrated that there is simply no secondary market for undocumented, untested and unofficial material. Material like this only undermines collector confidence which is at an all time low right now because of the amount of undocumented crap being dumped onto the market. Tommy and List, Meteorite Burning Hoax and Other Meteor/Meteorite Related Hoaxes a Short History Unfortunately this crap hoax has been picked up by The Daily Mail UK, The Sun UK, Metro UK and is making its way into the US press as fact. This type of Sterno burning hoax was first used in Israel and reported as a burning meteorite on a beach in Bat Yam in April 2010. So much for the press doing any verification of the story prior to printing. We have had the Latvia Telephone Co. crater hoax 2009 (done for a publicity stunt), the German boy 2009 and copy-cat children getting hit by meteorites, the Xinjiang China impact crater hoax (bomb crater) the India Engineering College "Meteorite" Killing 2016 (buried TNT or other explosive in the campus of the college), Nicaragua Impact Crater on an airbase 2014 (a bomb or explosive likely accidentally released by an aircraft) and more in the past. There have been numerous contrails reported as meteor trails, and faked meteor videos from Mexico, Oklahoma City and others. The media in the past have also claimed forest fires in Colorado and Australia were the result of meteorite impact. One man in the US has written that the Great Chicago Fire was caused by a meteorite strike. [meteorite-list] Father of Meteor Allsky Networks, Richard Spalding, R.I.P.
List, Most of this below was written by Tom Dorman after I delivered the news to him. I have edited it slightly. Just a sad note we heard this morning of the passing last night of Dick Spalding (Sandia National Laboratories) who was instrumental in starting the setting up and running of meteor fireball all sky camera Systems in the U.S. but also in other countries around the world. Fireball all sky camera system can now be bought off the shelf these days but back in the 1990's Dick was giving (many were paid for out of his own monies) the systems to willing amateurs such as the late Jim Gamble and myself who run the El Paso Fireball meteor camera in support of the North America fireball network. These early cameras system help give a better understanding of meteors, fireball events and meteor showers and their origins. Some of the early fireball cameras that Dick gave out to many amateurs were through DOD grants. Can say we were lucky to have known the man and was able to break bread with Dick. Dick gave graciously of his time and always was willing to answer questions from even lowly amateurs such as our self. Our condolences and thoughts go out to his wife, family and those who worked with Dick for many years at Sandia National Laboratories. God's speed Dick you will be missed. Dick you were a quiet treasure of our nation. Dick thank you for your service. Thank you my friend. I am have greatful to have spent several hours and more than 5 years of knowing you and working with you. Occupants were then robbed at knife point. Members of this group appear to stage themselves along the road to intercept the stopped vehicles. If you are driving and your vehicle is attacked, do not stop until you have reached a well-lit area with other people nearby, such as a gas station or municipal building. If you are on the auto route, continue to the next toll station and contact the police immediately. Re: [meteorite-list] Algeria Bolide 2100 Local 01OCT2016 w/ videos
Elton and Tommy, Elton I think that you hit the nail on the head. I have no evidence that any of the images that they used for their tv news were of the event and yes the one footage segment that they replayed was of a recycled jet contrail (also used in the past week for the UK event). Their impact crater was a large pothole/ small sinkhole in the highway. " Yeah, Bishar this looks like a meteor trail to me wink wink, lets use it and get an early lunch!" From: Tommy via Meteorite-list <meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com> Why do they show a jet with Sun lit contrails during the report??? Regards!
