Very interesting indeed, thanks, Paul, for sharing. Would be thrilling to be
compared with Stefan Ralew's NWA 7325. Surprisingly I couldn't find any
references to NWA 7325.

The meteorite which fell between BANMA (班玛) and Mǎn Zhǎng Xiāng (满掌乡), in Banma
County (班玛县), Golog Tibetan Autonomous prefecture, Qinghai province in China on
24 August 2016 at about 21:00 local time is now officially registered in the
Meteoritical Bulletin Database as BANMA.

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=64021

Still the exact fall location remains confusing.

Both 33°15'11"N, 100°27'54"E AND 33°15.18’N, 100°27.9’E  are mentioned in the
writeup.

Could anyone clarify the exact fall location? Thank you!

Hi all,

I now have gotten some additional info from the Sonneborgh bureau:

Sonnenborgh did not have a weight available, but the stolen Serooskerken ( =
Ellemeet) diogenite piece (pictured in the link above) is about 7 cm (2.8) in
diameter.

The rest of the stolen inventory is not that special, but includes:

- a Bilitonite tektite
- four pieces of Holbrook
- a piece of Dalgaranga
- a piece of Wellman
- a thin section of Arispe
- a pseudo-meteorite (Mellissant)
- a small tube with ash of the Vesuvius volcano

The meteorites were, along with some other valuables and papers, in a safe which
was lifted in its entirety, so the meteorites were likely not the main target of
the heist.

The stolen Ellemeet fragment is one of only two larger pieces in existence.

[meteorite-list] Oued Awlitis 001 - Serendipity !

2014-07-06 Thread karmaka via Meteorite-list
Oued Awlitis 001 - Serendipity !

That's what I call serendipity ! Congratulations!

History: (A. Irving and M. Aid) In January 2014 a group of eight people
traveling in two cars were returning northward after an unsuccessful meteorite
hunting trip to southern Morocco, when they stopped near Oued Awlitis to cook
dinner by the roadside. During a search for firewood, Mr. Zaid Oussaid found a
buried piece of dead tree trunk, but he could not excavate it by hand. With the
use of a pickaxe he was able to pull the wood out of the ground, but he then
noticed beside it in the cavity a flat ellipsoidal, brownish gray rock coated
by glossy translucent crust with anastomozing wrinkle ridges. Upon returning to
his home (at Dwar Ait Gazo, 30 km west of Tagounite), Mr. Oussaid showed the
382 g specimen to Mr. Mohamed Aid, who organized a return trip to the find site
on February 21, 2014, and after a search of the area an additional 50.5 g piece
which fits exactly onto the main stone was found about 50 m away.

[meteorite-list] Cosmochemistry Papers - Future and Support

2014-07-04 Thread karmaka via Meteorite-list
Dear list members,

I do really appreciate this website

http://cosmochemistry-papers.com/

Well done, Dominik! Thank you very much for the time and energy you've invested
into it!

Please read Dominik's post which I've quoted  below.

If you appreciate the website as much as I do, please let Dominik and everybody
know and please consider
actively supporting this website by updating its contents.

I would be willing to participate in updating this website on a part time
basis. Who else is willing to share the work?

Thank you!

Best regards

Martin

Dominik's statement:

The Future of Cosmochemistry Papers is
Unknown[http://cosmochemistry-papers.com/2014/07/04/the-future-of-cosmochemistry-papers-is-unknown/]

This site started in October 2013 as an experiment. Although never advertised
except for an announcement on the MetSoc and the German Mineralogical Society
mailing lists, the site is successful, but judge for yourself. The average
stats are as follows:
Number of weekly abstracts posted: ~15-25  (total until today: 700 –
congratulations to all who read all of them!)
Number of journals currently covered: 21
Monthly unique users: 300
Monthly views: ~2000
Weekly unique users: ~90
Weekly views: ~400
Daily unique users (weekdays): ~25
Daily views (weekdays): ~70-100
Users from Different countries per day: 8-10
Users from 50 countries visited the webpage at least once.
Weeks don’t add up to months and days don’t add up to weeks, as unique users
are reported. Users visiting the webpage more than once a week are counted as
one per week. In addition, 13 followers don’t visit the site, but get the posts
via email. So these need to be added to the stats above.
I started this site as I wished for such a site myself. After almost 10 months,
the site still is an experiment and its continuation is unclear. In any case, I
just wanted to start it. For the moment, I will continue to update it for a
couple more weeks. I will keep this post on top over the next week and would
like to ask whether anyone else likes this page and would be interested in
continuing it. I am happy to provide any further information to anyone who is
interested in taking over. Please also indicate your interest, if you could
imagine participating in this part time, in case a number of people would want
to share the updating process. And please also keep in mind that this should be
a longer time commitment.
However this turns out, it’s been a nice an interesting experiment in all its
facets for about a year, and I enjoyed updating it during this time.
best,  Dominik

Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk Meteorite Falling in Dark Flight

2014-04-04 Thread karmaka
Dear list members,

the moving dark spot in the footage does definitely not show the falling
meteorite because the direction does not
fit to the location of the impact hole in the ice of the lake. It's probably a
bird.

Graham, I've analysed the footage and could not see the mass fall.

days it was almost bound to happenand there is also the footage of
the main mass of Chelyabinsk hitting the lakethe spash/ impact can
be seen...has anybody tried to look at the frames leading to that to
try and see the falling mass?

It's only about 3 seconds of video but there appears to be a black

I agree! Serious meteorite-related discussions and exchange require texts, no
'thumbs up' !

Quality information about meteorites belongs HERE first!

Every now and then, one of the scientists will post something very
interesting and educational. Some of the best planetary-scientists in
the world lurk on this List and they occasionally post some really
fascinating stuff. I think what we are experiencing here, in part, is
a drain of posts going from the List to Facebook. Many regular
posters here on the List are now very active on Facebook. And, people
have a tendency to forget the good quickly and then hang on to the bad
indefinitely. It's selective memory. In the last couple of months.
we have had thought-provoking discussions about meteorites and
planetary science. Doctors Rubin, Agee, Bunch, Korotev, Grossman,
(and several others who I cannot recall at the moment), often jump in
to a discussion to provide interesting and useful insights. Those
posts just get forgotten quickly for some reason.

In my 6+ years on the List, I have seen a roller coaster of activity -
sometimes busy, sometimes not. And, there are actually fewer ads now
than there used to be years ago. Many of the people that used to post
ads are now gone and we haven't heard from them much at all in recent
years. New dealers have come on to the scene and they post ads, but
it seems to me that the number of ads has not increased - it just
seems that why because fewer people are posting in general - so the
ads are more noticeable.

Facebook is a great resource, but it will never replace the Met-List. :)

 Hi Shawn,

In this day and age, posts via EMAIL are pretty much instantaneous. I have
never gone to the website to read or post messages for this list. Is there
a reason why you do that instead of just getting the posts instantly via
email? IMO, reading messages in a list such as this on a website is
archaic, but maybe you have your reasons. I used to do that on Compuserve
20 to 25 years ago, but why go to different websites for all of the
community groups that you read instead of having the messages all sent
automatically to email? It's easy to set up rules in email apps so that
 you
have all of the MetList emails in one folder, all of the
Pizza-is-yummy-Society emails in another folder, etc. But like I said,
 maybe you have your reasons.

 Regards,

 Bob L.

 Hello Listers

 My two cents

The List went quite ish when Art did the over haul and personal I don't go
to the website any more because the posts arent instant. Right now, if you
go to Meteorite Central the latest post is from March 5th. In this day and
age, people want their posts to be instant, how it was on meteorite central
before the over haul. Now it take weeks before a post shows up on the
website, not sure why Art did this, but it sounds like its hurting the
website then helping it. Art, I wish the website went back to the way it
was, I would go to the website 10 to 15 times a day if not more, now I
 don't
go, I have a link to some MC mail list that shows the postings, but for
 real
time use on Meteorite Central its dated and not prevalent to current trends
in social media and how websites work today with instant posting. Please
 fix
Meteorite Central Art to how it was :)

[meteorite-list] Increasing rust on Chelyabinsk main mass

2014-01-04 Thread karmaka
Dear list members,

the increasing rust that has recently been witnessed on the surface of 'big Че'
is apparently no problem since it's merely because of the
evaporating water from the inside of the meteorite, local experts say.

Are they right or is there reason to worry? What do you think?

http://www.otr-online.ru/news/news_19374.html

automatic translation:

Chelyabinsk meteorite lose weight and rust in the museum
According to experts , the chip asteroid just dries

Chelyabinsk meteorite lose weight and rust in the museum. This news caused a
wave of anxiety on the Internet with the locals , because CHebarkulskij
meteorite has already become one of the branded characters region.
First noticed rust museum visitors , and later it was confirmed by scientists .
According to experts , the chip asteroid just dries up. Stone spent on the lake
a few months and soaked with water through hairline cracks . Now, the liquid
evaporates from the meteorite . Scientists believe that the process will take
about six months. To speed it up , the museum staff every night raised dome
that covered the meteorite . When all the moisture evaporates from the wreckage
, weigh it again to finally establish mass.
This is a natural process. After lifting the oxidation of iron chlorides and
acquire their true color , that is rusting . Just the water evaporates , it
changes the weight because he just lay for a long time under water , - says
Pavel Sidorov , a spokesman for the Chelyabinsk museum.
Similar processes occur with other fragments of the celestial body . The second
largest meteorite fragment from the lake CHebarkul now travels around the
country . Another two of the most important pieces in the collection are stored
Chelyabinsk Museum.

Thanks,

Martin

'Meteoritical decentralization' or 'research sabotage', that is the Norwegian
question ...

(But is that really the question???)

The conflict about the Grefsen mass of the Oslo meteorite between Ødegaard and
Sannes and the Natural History Museum (NMH) in Oslo continues and raises some
basic questions:

[meteorite-list] 'The Atlas of Meteorites' - soon or never?

2013-10-06 Thread karmaka
Dear list members,

many of us have been waiting impatiently for more than three years for

'The Atlas of Meteorites' by M. Grady, G. Pratesi and V. Moggi Cecchi

(9780521840354) to be published. The book description sounded very interesting.

Unfortunately Cambridge University Press has been postponing the publishing
date again and again and again

Until recently it was supposed to be the 1st November 2013.

There were no results matching your search.

Now it has even disappeared from the website of Cambridge University Press,

at Amazon it says Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available

and the publication date has been reset to 24 March 2013.

That doesn't sound very promising

Is it still worth waiting or has the publication definitely been cancelled?

Thanks in advance for any information that can shed some light on this matter!

Best regards

Martin

Betreff: [meteorite-list] New Brazilian fall field trip report - The Vicencia
Meteorite
Datum: Sat, 05 Oct 2013 04:15:13 +0200

 Hello all!

I have arrived today from another field trip to recover the most recent
Brazilian fall. I have solved to write this small report to let everybody know
about this fall:

This very interesting fall event occurred on a small district of Vicencia named
Borracha. Vicência is a small city located about 120 km from Recife city, the
capital of Pernambuco state in Brazil northwest. According to residents,
Borracha interestingly received its name because it grew very fast stretching
like rubber, that means Borracha in Portuguese.

Mr. Adeilson was working in front of his modest joinery in Borracha village on
a sunny Monday day of September, 21st. At a certain moment at around 3:00 PM he
stooped to pick up something on the the ground and suddenly heard a very loud
noise of something that had just hit the ground nearby him. He did not know
what had happened but soon noticed a very strange black rock on a small pit
only about 1 meter from him (he told us he measured the distance from where he
was and the meteorite pit with a measuring tape and this can be seen on some
youtube videos). Mr. Adeilson caught the almost hammer stone that could have
killed him and noticed that one side of the rock was still hot and the other
cold.

Many neighbors were in front of their houses and witnessed the impact event
noticing only the loud noise of the meteorite impact on the ground. As usual,
nothing at impact zone was heard or seen in the air except the ground hit
impact. One or two of them were just on the exact impact location very few
minutes ago.

I had just arrived home from another hard work day on Friday 27th and read some
Internet hot news concerning a possible new meteorite fall in Brazil. According
to these news only a meteorite could have caused such event. I immediately
called Dr. Elizabete Zucolotto, meteorite researcher and curator of the
Brazilian NM. She also read the news and there was no doubt that it could be a
meteorite fall. We had to go to that location immediately. We bought the flight
tickets to Recife at that same night and traveled the following day.

Arriving at Recife we rented a car and headed to Vicência and then to Borracha
village. On the way from Vicência city to the village we started to notice the
mountains were covered with sugar cane and banana plantations and started to
notice that finding more pieces of this fall could possibly be harder than
Varre-sai. At least in Varre-sai there were some pastures to search. The
entrance for the village is near an alcohol plant. Finding the village was also
hard as there was no signs on the way and we had to ask to many people we found
on the way. A lot of them were drunk and we thought that the sugar cane
plantion were only for local usage..

The village is basically one road with houses on both sides and a small church.
Interestingly the first person we have found on that village was Mr. Adeilson
in front of his joinery that I have recognized by the videos and pictures. As
hapenned in Varre-Sai with Mr. Germano, Mr Adeilson was already a famous person
on that small village and had already given some interviews to TV channels and
local radios. Fortunatelly the rock was still with him besides the fact that he
had received many offers to sell but refused. The first lower offer he received
was from a local resident that offered a new motorcycle.

At fall location we made video interviews with Mr. Adeilson and some neighbors
that witnessed the fall event. It was hard even for us that are Portuguese
native to sometime understand what Mr. Adeilson said because of his strong
accent. We then asked him if we could see the rock. He agreed and lead us to
his modest house nearby the joinery. Holding the stone there was no doubt it
was a beautiful super fresh meteorite that had fallen less than a week ago and
was recovered still hot from the ground! We took pictures and talked to a lot
of people that were in front of Mr. Adeilson's house attracted by the outer
space visitor notice that spread like fire. There was no condition to try
buying the stone at that moment and we decided to leave Mr. Adeilson's house
and headed again to the fall area to try search on nearby mountains covered
with plantations. Also we have used the best effective meteorite recovery
method: teaching locals to find meteorites and offering them a reward.

Another thing that must be done was trying to figure out the meteorite bolide
direction and possible strewn field

Hello Listers,

Here another link not sure if this been posted, but it crazy how it did
oxidize in the water. Now the question is home mush will it oxidize on the
surface.
I wonder if the state of this fragment will hold true for the mother load :)
Only time will tell.
It would be cool to own a sample from the bottom of the lake, once they bring
it up to the surface :)

Tiny Chelyabinsk Meteorite Fragment Found, Big to Be Lifted Soon
Topic: Hail of Meteorite Fragments Hits Russia

YEKATERINBURG, September 25 (RIA Novosti) – While removing silt in an effort
to fish out a huge chunk of meteorite from the bottom of a lake in Russia’s
Urals, divers recovered a smaller meteorite on Tuesday, scientists said.

A meteorite, estimated to weigh about 10,000 metric tons, exploded over the
Chelyabinsk Region in February. The biggest of chunks that the celestial body
fragmented into ended up in the local Chebarkul Lake, and silt is now being
pumped from the lakebed to recover it.
According to scientists, the huge chunk, weighting hundreds of metric tons, is
buried under a 2.5-meter (8.2-foot) layer of silt. Scientists expect to remove
the silt around it on Wednesday evening.

However, divers came across a smaller one on Monday evening, but were unable
to recover it because of a huge amount of silt on the lakebed. The rock was
eventually recovered early on Tuesday.

“A meteorite chunk roughly the size of a human fist has been lifted from the
depth of 13 meters [43 feet] in Lake Chebarkul,” the Urals Federal University
said in a statement.

Viktor Grokhovsky, the founder and longstanding leader of the university’s
meteorite expedition, said he studied the images of the smaller meteorite and
confirmed its space origin.

Re: [meteorite-list] Met Bulletin Update - Braunschweig Approved - April 23, 2013 Fall

2013-09-23 Thread karmaka
Well, there was quite some excitement among meteorite aficionados
in Germany, but it's true that even in the German media this fall was almost
not covered.

It's good to have witnessed another German fall after more than a decade.
It's unfortunate though that it shattered severely on impact.

Hi Bulletin Watchers,

Lost in all of the excitement about Chelyabinsk was the 04-23-13 fall
of the Braunschweig L6 meteorite in Germany.

 Write-up :

 Braunschweig52°13.548’N, 10°31.193’E
 Niedersachsen, Germany
 Fell: 2013 Apr 23, 02:05 a.m.
 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

History: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) Erhard Seemann recognized a rock
impact in the concrete pavement in his yard 3 m from his front door
when he came home on April 23, 2013, in the morning. He documented his
observation and collected the main fragments (~700 g) of the nearly
complete crushed stone. A neighbor heard a strong hum followed by a
loud crash that night at about 2:10 a.m. In the morning he found
several small rock fragments (~50 g) in his gateway. In Ahlum village,
Julian Mascow was surprised by a bright flare coming from the SE,
ending in a short tracer just over his head. About 90 s later he was
frightened by an explosion and ensuing rattling sound around him. Mark
Vornhusen’s web camera documented the fireball from Vechta. When
Rainer Bartoschewitz documented the meteorite impact, he discovered
many further small fragments (~500 g) within 18 m of the others.

Physical characteristics: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) One meteorite
individual of about 1.3 kg broken into hundreds of small fragments
after impacting concrete pavement. The biggest fragment, 214 g, stuck
in the concrete making a 7 cm diameter, 3 cm deep impression. Other
fragments were 30 g. The gray-white meteorite material is covered by
a 0.4 mm thick dull black fusion crust with abundant 50 μm cracks.
 Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 4.75.

Petrography: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) Recrystallized matrix of
olivine, pyroxene (0.02-0.5 mm) and secondary feldspar bear poorly
developed and deformed, dominantly barred olivine chondrules (0.5 to
15 mm, av. 1.5 mm), metal, troilite and chromite. Dark metal-troilite
veins (50 µm) cross the meteorite. Olivine shows rather sharp
 extinction and irregular cracks.

Geochemistry: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart, P. Appel and B. Mader, Kiel)
 olivine Fa24.3-26.0 (mean Fa25.2±0.40, n=33); Ca-poor pyroxene

The Comayagua fall from Honduras is likely never to be seen again. Supposedly
sold to a university in Tegucigalpa. I offered a very high price and highly
doubt a university would be able to pay in one of the poorest countries in
Latin America. It seems to have vanished. What a loss as it penetrated a house
and the entire bed while a man was laying in it!
Very sad because it is an incredible meteorite and the first fall in Honduras.

Hi Jim,

I'm very sorry if the term 'picture book' was misleading. With this word
I was referring to the great photos that are included in the met bull entries
of the more interesting
newly approved Antarctic specimens ( update 30 August, AMN 36(2) ), which could
be found at the bottom of the page (link is dead now, try new link below). By
clicking on the individual entries (starting with Larkman Nunatak 12002) you
can see the great photos. I wish more met bull entries, beyond the ones from
ANSMET, were illustrated in this way. It would be nice if one could always see
photos of the main mass and a thin section of all newly approved meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] 4.5 kg find on 9th June in Setesdalsheiene, Valle, Aust-Agder, Norway

2013-08-31 Thread karmaka
Dear list members

In spite of searching the Setesdalsheiene area around the find location
apparently no other finds have been made.

http://translate.google.de/translate?sl=autotl=enjs=nprev=_thl=deie=UTF-8u=http%3A%2F%2Fnorskmeteornettverk.no%2F

What remained to be done was done: digging out the crater

The finder Mr. Fjeldheim dug out what he had left behind before while Norway's
'meteorite man' temporarily turned into a camera man.

The small impact crater has been transported to the Natural History Museum.

Watch the video:http://norskmeteornettverk.no/bilder/2013/valle.mp4

I would like to know what they are going to do with it. Probably making a
casting mold.

The Norwegian Natural History Museum has offered 20 Kronen (~ US$ 32673)
for the specimen.

As reported yesterday the exact find location has officially not been made
public and the matter might become more complicated as soon as the land owner
comes into the play when the location will be disclosed.

[meteorite-list] Jbilet Winselwan

2013-08-21 Thread karmaka
Dear list members,

Jbilet Winselwan (CM2)

is official now:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=57788

Jbilet Winselwan26°40.044’N, 11°40.637’W

Morocco/Western Sahara

Found: 24 May 2013

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

History: (H. Chennaoui Aoudjehane, M. Aoudjehane, A. Laroussi, A. Bouferra) In
early June 2013, A. Bouferra, a meteorite hunter from Smara, reported a new
carbonaceous chondrite that had been found close to Smara. Due to its proximity
to Smara (7 km), many meteorite hunters visited the area in the summer of 2013.

Physical characteristics: Total mass is estimated about 6 kg, with small and
complete pieces between 3 and 10 g, a few medium-sized pieces 10 to 200 g and
rare big pieces 200 g. The largest sample is ~900 g. Fresh looking fusion is
crust present on many fragments. Some fragments are wind ablated. Some cracks
contain secondary, crystalline alteration products. Interior of stones is black
and peppered with chondrules.

Petrography: (R. Hewins, MNHNP, L Garvie, ASU). The meteorite contains
chondrules and fragments of Types I and II. These include BO-PO, formerly
metal-rich, and olivine-pyroxene Type I chondrules. Type II chondrules with
forsterite relict grains are present. There are regions packed with chondrule
material and coarse PCP, and zones with scattered chondrule material in
fine-grained matrix. Chondrule sizes range up to 1.2 mm, though most are around
200 μm. A few CAIs are 800 μm. Powder x-ray diffraction shows a strong 0.7 nm
peak for serpentines, a broad but weaker peak around 1.3 nm corresponding to
smectites, and a weak broad peak consistent with tochilinite.

Geochemistry: (R. Hewins, MNHNP) Olivine is Fa0.98±0.44 and Fa25-40. Pyroxene
is Fs2.6±1.5 and Fs40-61. Rare kamacite with 5.8 wt% Ni is present. (P.
Cartigny, IPGP) The oxygen isotopic compositions of two pieces were determined
as δ18O 3.811±0.09 and 5.851±0.016, δ17O -2.446±0.040 and -0.601±0.026,
respectively. Δ17O values are -4.441 and -3.663, mean -4.052.

Classification: The oxygen isotope compositions, petrography and mineral
compositions are all consistent with CM2

Specimens: 17.8 g MNHNP, 17.4 g FSAC provided by L. Labenne, 20 g UNM provided
by G. Fujihara, 122 g ASU provided by Farmer. Other collection masses include:
Farmer 2.6 kg, Labenne 1.6 kg, T. Jakobowski 512 g, G. Fujihara 358 g, M.
Ouzillou 173 g.

Best regards

Martin

Dear Bryan and list members,

taking into account what you said, Bryan, I'm curious to see whether the
alleged fall in
Yuncheng, Shanxi on June 15 (mentioned earlier on this list) will be officially
confirmed or will turn out
to be a 'fake-meteorite-event' or 'purchased-NWA-becomes-fresh-fall-incident'
as well.

Hi Mike and all,
Yes, I agree with you, but the fake-meteorite-boom started since 2010
and become worse and worse recently. Not only some cheaters selling
fake meteorites, but also some reputable Chinese collectors use their
purchased NWAs to claim they were found in Chinese desert or Gobi
areas in order to attack more media attention and sell more money.
Nowadays, in China, all kinds of fake-meteorite-events will have a
profit chain on the backside, and single honest person can hardly beat
with numerous profit chains. If you pointed out a mendacity, blames or
even rumors will be flooded to you soonly on the internet. In this
condition, most Chinese scientists and honest collectors choose to be
quiet when faced with a fake-meteorite-event. Now, it became a trend,
official medias will be likely to report fake-meteorite-events, as
those fake events normally will use the exaggerative advocation and
will attrack more click-rates for the medias, such as someone possess
a tons weight meteorite (actually the stone is a slag) and have been
authenticated by an expert from Beijing Plenatrium which worth of 4
times price of the equal weight gold...
 Regards!
 Bryan

If it were up to Hutcheon, he would stick strictly to meteorite research. I

Dr. Davidson,
Thank you for your kind reply to the list concerning this event.

My personal take is that the photo of the meteorite is real although it is
unknown whether it is related to this reported event or not;. or perhaps
something in the trash dump exploded? The crater photo reminds me of the
Latvia faked crater although this may be that of an explosive device since the
military were photographed with the crater and the crater appears to be
not staged.. Another unfriendly feeling is the comment in the news reports
about the fall of the regime in China related to meteorite falls. This in the
Chinese context of reporting smells like a faked story.

 Hi Listees

Here is the vote of the Scottish jury - not real. If a meteorite was reported
to have fallen on the 31st July/1st August then the crater on the TV report
is not related to any fall. It looks like a hole that was dug several weeks ago
and left. The rocks, soil and the litter are just not freshly exposed. Sorry, I
know it has almost become axiomatic to call everything coming out of China a
fake, but this must surely be!

Hello List,

Can you imagine my surprise when Rob Matson emailed me and told me
that I would be honored with something very special for my birthday last
May 12. He had done a bit of pre-planning regarding the wording of the
citation and had got the help from a few people notably Dorothy Norton,
John Kashuba, Bob and Moni Verish – all of whom (including Rob Matson
himself, of course!) I want to thank very, very much.

I am truly honored to be wandering among the stars while still roaming
terrestrial fields! I am deeply touched to orbit the Sun together with such
celebrities as our late O.R. Norton [(163800) Richardnorton], his wife
Dorothy Norton [(149243) Dorothynorton = 2002 RL239], my late friend
Jim Kriegh [149244 Kriegh], alongside our esteemed Geoff Notkin [(132904)
 Notkin = 2002 RB237], just to name a few.

The minor planet (247553) 2002 RV234 is a member of the Hilda family.
Hildas are in a 3:2 orbital resonance with Jupiter, i.e. they complete 3
orbits for every two Jovian orbits. They have dark surfaces, are rich in
organics and contain water. CI and CM meteorites are believed to originate
 in these types of asteroids.

My little asteroid is about 6.5 km in diameter, and, assuming an average
density of 2.1 g/cm^3 for CI/CM chondrites, this would amount to a mass
of about 3 x 10^11 metric tons (300 billion metric tons).
Most of this detailed info was provided by Rob Matson!

Here is the PDF-link to the Minor Planet Circular:

 http://www.minorplanetcenter.net/iau/ECS/MPCArchive/2013/MPC_20130722.pdf

Just enter my family name and you’ll find me at the top
of the second column of page 231 of that Circular.

Thank you very much for this
 honor bestowed on me,

 Bernd

Hello,

 Ensisheim 2013 is over.
The show was great. Always nice to see all the collectors and friends.
This year the Chelyabinsk meteorites were present and also new was the
found of the strewnfield of Beni-M´hira in Tunesia from Piere Marie
 Pele and his Team.
I think every collector that was visiting the show bought a piece of
 Chelyabinsk.
You had a large variety of different sizes and shapes.
The prieces were from 6 - 20 Euro per gram depending on size and shape.
Our friends from Morocco showed also some nice materials.
Thank you for the visitors from oversea that took the long trip to
 Europe.
Thank you Zelimir for organizing this perfect event.

I have updated some photos on my website.

Betreff: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk strewnfield map and trajectory projection
 Datum: Sun, 16 Jun 2013 21:30:59 +0200Dear All,

A first version of the Chelyabinsk strewnfield map is now completed:

 http://www.meteorite-recon.com/en/Meteorite_Chelyabinsk_6.html

At the bottom of the page, we provide a download link to a large-size
 version.

The trajectory projection and wind models are based on the excellent work of
Karl Wimmer. Find coordinates were submitted from field researchers and private
enthusiasts, mainly from Russia. Additional information can be found in the
 accompanying text.

Please note that we encourage a non-commercial distribution of the strewnfield
 map only.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed.

 Cheers

 Svend

2013-06-14 Thread karmaka
Well Mike, as far as I've understood it, this find has got nothing to do with
the Oslo fall,
because it was found near Setesdalen, Valle, Aust-Agder.
Furthermore, it has just been found thanks to an incredible Norwegian
scientist, indeed.

Bravo, Mr. Fjeldheim!

And yet the incredible Norwegian scientists still haven't bothered to classify
the fall yet. Sad.
Thankfully I shipped a piece of Moss strait from the field to Dr Grossmann
back them or we would still be waiting on Moss to be classified.
Anyone in Norway want to get Oslo done, talk to me. We can get it done in a
month.

Thank you Zelimir, but in this case the credit goes to the excellent Galactic
Analytics LLC team.
They were the first to spread the great news.
I look forward to next Friday evening's dinner talk in Ensisheim.

Martin, Thanks for the very important info!
You are always among the first for such announcements!
Nice discussion in perspective during the Friday dinner party in
Ensisheim, exactly one week from now.

Mike, I know that Morten Bilet (the owner of the Oslo main mass) was
willing to make it classified (discussion last year with him in
Ensisheim, after I purchased from him a 14 g crusted fragment).

I can provide you his mail address if needed.
But we can discuss this in Ensisheim next week as well.

Side note: in case, we still have 2 free tables (out of 55) in Ensisheim

 Best wishes,

 Zelimir

Plenty was found, but I have no idea why the Chinese have refused to publish
it.
I have a couple kilos of fragments if you want some.
Great meteorite, at least 100 kilos recovered.

The pictures certainly do look promising for being a meteorite, so it
would be good to get more accurate information on the exact time that
people were reporting sonic booms in coastal Connecticut. --Rob

It IS manmade and it is in Spain !

The photo shows the two brothers with the cast of the 'Retuerta del Bullaque'

You can see that it is the cast if you have a look at this. A very strong man

Mal,

Thanks for the post and the heads up. Definitely have to watch it!

They put this program together even faster than I thought they would, as back
on Feb 15th I posted this ( in part) to the List:

This fall will almost certainly be featured in all the future meteorite
themed programs. Perhaps NOVA will do a nice episode on it soon.

I'm certain that many others felt NOVA would make such a program too, but it
is good to see that my prediction from the very first day of the fall came true
so quickly, just short of 6 weeks later. Can't wait to see it.

 Thanks again.

 Best,
 Robert Woolard

Dear list members,

according to ITAR-TASS the cosmic-ray exposure or ejection age of Chelyabinsk
is reported to be
289 million years, which seems very, very high for a chondrite. Can this be?

Are there other chondrites with such a high exposure age or is this a typo and
it is rather 28.9 million years?
