I would not make a donation to this guy, and that is what you are doing, no one has a crystal ball that tells them what is going to happen in the future. His $49.50 plus $99 a year is good for no one but this guy.
Only sell your stocks if you want to take a loss on them now and that would depend on your overall tax situation. This is not a "new American phenomenon", I have seen it several times in the last several years.
