We saw at least two Great Blue herons at the Coon Rapids Dam yesterday morning.
There is a rookery there and though I haven't seen any on nests yet it could
be any day.

This morning at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County there were 8 Pectoral Sandpipers
and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs out on the mudflats. There were several flocks of
Tundra Swans flying overhead, also on the ground were Sandhill Crane, Snow,
Greater-white fronted, and Ross's Geese resting on the flats.
I've been watching the recent GWF Goose posts with interest and even
considering trying to see some birds of my own this weekend, but I'm
wondering if anyone has up-to-date info on where the highest goose numbers
have advanced to now. Any info on good bets for seeing Greater
White-fronted Geese
There wasn't much movement this morning with only 1 migrating flock of 30
Canada Geese. The only other geese were just the Canada that had stoped at
any ponds or lakes in the area. Other waterfowl today include Trumpeter Swan,

This past weekend, I showed two groups of birders around Sax-Zim Bog on
Sunday and had one heck of a fun time birdwatching. The morning started out
with a Great Gray Owl, and we were treated to Gray Jays, a Northern Shrike
lingering around (could still be for a few more weeks), and several
While attending the International Festival of Owls earlier this month, I
made sure to take a handful of photos to share!
There are endless opportunities to learn about the amazing world of owls at
this event. Everything is owl-based at the festival; from the

The waterfowl migration is going strong in our area. We have been seeing
large numbers and a good diversity of birds in Lac qui Parle, Big Stone,
and southern Traverse Counties. I saw a couple of large flocks of
white-fronts and snow geese near Rothi and Kufrin Waterfowl Production

Around 9 am today, I was at the Sand Point section of Frontenac State
Park, taking pictures of 10 buffleheads diving in the bay and 2 sandhill
cranes feeding in the nearby marshgrasses. I was thrilled to hear the
sound of migrating tundra swans. The first group consisted of about
200 swans
In addition to the Pectoral Sandpipers and Lesser Yellowlegs reported
earlier today (viewable from the Cemetery on the north side), there are
still large numbers of waterfowl on the lake, though not in the numbers of
last week of the weekend: a flock of Tundra Swans (yes, Tundras, not
A flock of sandhill cranes flew low over my NE Minneapolis home at about
19:00 this evening. Probably about 12 - 20.

Busy Day at Pickerel Lake:
Much of the waterfowl is located at the far end of the lake from the parking
area, requiring some hiking or a scope for viewing. Ice coverage has gone from
approx 80% on Tues. to 40% today.
One item of interest- goose in an owl/eagle nest. Hopefully just checking out
Saw about 20 Trumpeter Swans on the Minnesota River a couple of days ago.
Yesterday I found to House Finches dueling by song in Chanhassen. And
today in Chanhassen I found Song Sparrow, several Red Wing Blackbirds, and
a Robin singing. Downtown I saw a Grackle near the post office. Spring
