I have received a number of requests for information about the Lewis's
Woodpecker. I didn't post earlier because I am not subscribed to the
listserve.
The Lewis's Woodpecker is at the house of Janet Anderson near the town of
Roosevelt. It's on CR 17

Hey All,
Just a reminder that we will be closing the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive late
this afternoon - Thursday, November 7 - for the deer season - which begins
Saturday and lasts through Sunday, November 17. If there's no snow on
The house I once rented in Ojai valley, CA was besieged by feral peacocks that
roosted in the trees. My friend who owned the house kept a crossbow for
reasons he refused to name. If global warming bequeaths us resident peacocks,
just think of the feathers and sunday dinners we can have!
Birding for the BBA in Southern Chisago county this summer I saw a peacock
cross the road (quite a shock - I assumed it was a turkey at first) and
previously heard them and spoke with local residents who said one of the
farmers nearby had some on his property. Perhaps one wandered off.

The discovery of the Lewis's Woodpecker here in Minnesota prompted me to
pass on this woodpecker trivia question. I was recently on a trip to Oregon
and California and, while I was there, I subscribed to several local bird
lists. Oregon recently had a first state sighting of a Red-bellied
Peacocks. Are they considered rare, accidental, migrants or common? I know
of a few places I have seen them running free and I have about a dozen
living across from my house (in a zoo). Sometimes, they escape and come into
my yard. Should I claim them for my yard bird list? Once, while driving

able to take several photos.

I looked at the MN checklist on the MOU site and found 9 woodpecker species.
The Lewis's will bring that up to 10.
The answer to the Woodpecker Trivia question just arrived and I've
included it below.

Wasn't there an acorn woodpecker reported in the state a couple of years
ago? That would put us at 11.
I've had 7 species (downy, hairy, red-bellied, red-headed, flicker,
sapsucker, pileated) in my yard.

This is the 4th Lewis's Woodpecker to be found in Minnesota (1974-74, 1992,
1994, and now 2013). We've also had 3 Williamson's Sapsuckers in the state,
putting us at 12 species in all.

Regarding my visit to see the Lewis's Woodpecker today, I sat for a little more
than an hour at the site. Within 5-10 minutes of my arrival, it came to the
Anderson's feeder. It only came to the feeder 3 times while I was there. It
spent the majority of the time in the tree on the northeast
