foraging in my
spruce and birch and coming to the feeders. I've encountered fewer in the
surrounding parks as well, and I wonder if they saw this winter coming and
got out while the getting was good. How are your nuthatch numbers
comparing this winter?

There was a Great Egret in the marshes by the New Page mill in Spirit
Valley this afternoon (vicinity of I-35 and Hwy 2/Bong Bridge). It was
only visible from the Hwy 2 bridge at the time; I was able to get decent
looks from the Hwy 2 pedestrian path/bikeway.

fun watching them come through, particularly one gutsy Ovenbird

Documentation shots of up to three of the birds from shore, and two at a
time through the scope, in almost-identifiable quality here. The first shot
is the scene and you can see what Peder and I had to work with as far as
distance and conditions.
Monday 14 July Peder Svingen and I saw four adult Red-throated Loons on Lake
Superior from the 22nd Street access. We watched the birds until 11:15 AM
as they preened and drifted farther out east into the lake. A scope was
essential for decent viewing at that time.
Earlier this morning, Peder
to be Least Tern, then
got my binocs up and saw a short all-blood-red bill on the mystery tern. The
mystery tern continued to fly towards WI and I couldn't stay to look more.
Keep a look out if you're in the neighborhood.

Thanks to the birder who confirmed my ID this morning at Old Cedar in
Bloomington. I haven't been following the hotlines lately and had no idea
there had been an Acadian Flycatcher singing at the crossing of the marsh
boardwalk and Long Meadow Lake trail just west of the parking lot. Until I
sparrows in winter are a gift.
