Like Pat DeWenter, I found my ground feeders mobbed today. Species noted
included 70-80 White-throated Sparrows, 7 Harris's Sparrows, and 11
White-crowned Sparrows. The last two numbers represent yard highs. I also
had 9 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks at an open straight safflower feeder this
I have had at least two adult Harris's Sparrows and one adult White-crowned
Sparrow joining the score or so White-throated Sparrows at my ground feeders
since Tuesday. Low light periods in the morning and evening seem to be the
most reliable times. E-mail me back channel if interested in
A FOY Song Sparrow was at my ground feeder this morning. At noon, I
observed 3 FOY Turkey Vultures making short work of a road-killed grey
squirrel just west of the entrance to the new High School in W. Bemidji.
Also, since last week, I have observed at different times of the day, a
nesting? pair
I had one FOY Fox Sparrow join a score or so of Dark-eyed Juncos, up to 11
American Goldfinches, up to ~140 Common Redpolls, and 3 Purple Finches at
the feeders today. The redpoll count represents my high for the season, no
doubt influenced by the foot of fresh snow from the latest installment.
For the past week, nearly daily, on both sides of this weekend's heavy
snowfall, I have seen a Merlin hunting actively in the area of the entrance
to the new Bemidji High School at midday suggesting that this bird might be
setting up shop in this area.
