Two recently made images of yellow-headed blackbirds were just uploaded to the
MOU galleries section, taken with a Zeiss fieldscope and Nikon D300 digital
camera.

I watched an immature bald eagle hanging out at Hyland Lake in Bloomington
yesterday. He seemed to cruise mostly along the shoreline, and at one point
landed in a tree very close to where I was walking for a good look through my
binocs. I also had a fleeting glimpse of a barred owl flying
A little lesson to be learned and relearned by all of us. Be extremely
careful when hiking and climbing around with or without your binocs and
cameras. Don't be shy about using a good walking stick.

All,
I am curious about the Minnesota Common Loon population? Are they increasing
in number or decreasing? I visited Hyland Lake in Bloomington last spring, and
the lake was filled with migrating loons, but I realize, of course, such a
sight is certainly not an indicator of their population
I just uploaded two new images in the MOU gallery of Western Grebes taken on a
small slough on the Minnesota-South Dakota border just west of Canby, MN. The
site is the beginning of the grasslands in rolling glacial moraine country.
Enjoy,

I saw and heard a pair of Common Loons a couple of mornings ago on Dan Patch
Lake here in Savage. I know there has been a nesting pair over on nearby
Hanrahan Lake in recent years. If this is a repeat performance, perhaps they
were just visiting Dan Patch Lake to savor some of our famous Coho
I fully agree! I too have encountered a few elitists in this group who
consider it their private domain. Heaven forbid that the word photograph
should appear in the text of a message, while the very core of bird observation
is a visual experience! I fully realize some of the folks in the
at just the
right angle by the sun to be seen. One or two degrees right or left, and it
can disappear!. . . an interesting factoid about this magnificent bird that
deserves all the protection we can provide.
Enjoy the season,

About 1PM I saw a flight of approximately 40 white pelicans meandering in
circles high above and just east of the Wood Lake Nature Center in Richfield.
They were drifting to the southeast towards the airport. Let's hope there were
no collisions.
