I began mourning for Bob when I learned his wife had died. I cherish the
birding hours I spent with Bob on the North Shore and in South Dakota. He
was a very kind man.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I will never forget the spruce grouse in my

Thank you MOU-Net for posting our requests for volunteers for
the State Fair. Our MOU booth markets our message of birds and bird
conservation as well as giving information about birding events and venues.
Once again, this year, we filled all of the shifts. We would
not be able to operate
It is busy on St. Paul's Snelling Ave. as the fair grounds are readied. Our

The MOU booth at the State Fair still has many openings for volunteers.
Everyone is welcome; new and experienced birders, backyard birders, friends
and family of birders. If you are not a member of MOU, this is a great way
to become acquainted
Sorry, I didn't include contact info. Just email me:

Greetings to MOU members and friends,
Our presence at the fair is most welcome by the DNR and we would like to
continue the long tradition of promoting birding and bird conservation
through our MOU booth on the DNR campus. Our calendar is filling quickly but
there are still many opportunities
A mixed flock of finches(40 or so) has been feeding in our yard for the past
week +. It was originally redpolls, pine grosbeaks and an occasional
goldfinch. This week, at least 6 pine siskins are present as well as two
hoary redpolls. I clearly saw both as they battled over a seed morsel in
About 20 pine grosbeaks and 15 redpolls are tying on their bibs and
freeloading on sunflower seed. No frosty redpolls, despite the cold
weather!

The pair of grosbeaks that showed up a few weeks ago recruited about 14
others- a nice mix of males and females- and today, one male evening
grosbeak. When they move in to the feed bins they are enough of an army to
overcome the 6 bluejay seed hogs. It doesn't take much drama to amuse us in
The 16 or so other grosbeaks at the feeders are pine grosbeaks.

A pair showed up today. I'm hoping that our many blue jays don't drive them
away. Last week, we had the first purple finches I've seen in a long time
but they have not returned despite the many dishes of tempting seed and
suet. I am again looking for a good BJ pie receipe!

Thanks for the great effort to volunteer at the MOU booth at the fair. I
mailed out passes last week. Volunteers should have them by Tuesday at the
latest. Please let me know of any problems so that I can take care of them
timely. Also, I do not have email addresses or mailing addresses for
feet at
the MOU booth while you listen to live music from the DNR bandstand. Close
up the booth when business gets slow and enjoy a treat on your way out.
