We are out for 6 days to Prairie Marsh Farm in west central Lac qui Parle
County to do some mowing and general repairs. We hit part of the spring
migration just right. First off on the 12th I was able to relocate the Say’s
Phoebe found by Garrett and Frank and others last Saturday in Big Stone
Yesterday I incorrectly reported a Chestnut-collared Longspur in Lac qui Parle
county. My eBird report has been corrected but I was unable to stop the rare

Today Marsha Moreen and I found a few new shorebird species. 1.5 miles north of
Salt Lake in a flooded field on the west side of the road we found 29 Lesser
and 6 Greater Yellowlegs, 4 Wilson’s Snipe, 4 Semipalmated Plover and 10
Pectoral Sandpipers. We also found Lesser Yellowlegs at two other
Over the last three days I have driven around LQP county scouting for good
shorebird habitat. The country township roads are generally in good springtime
condition although a few are still blocked off because of flood damage. All
lakes and ponds have high water levels, but there is still a lot

Salt Lake in Lac Qui Parle County is still primarily ice covered except for the
south west corner and along the edges. That being said the temperature out here
today is 57 degrees with a 15 mph wind from the south. I would hope that the
ice will be gone this week with consistent warmer weather.
Friday afternoon we arrived at Prairie Marsh Farm to open up the farm house for
the spring and fill the bird feeders that had been empty for five months. After
2 inches of snow overnight numerous birds soon found the feeders or were
seeking shelter in the grove.

Today around 1 PM at our back yard feeders we had a flock of 25 or more Common
Redpolls show up. These are the first Redpolls we’ve had this winter. We also
have a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers visiting on a regular basis.

We just had a Red-headed Woodpecker on a peanut feeder in our front yard.
Fairly uncommon in our suburban wooded neighborhood. So beautiful in the

Last weekend over 100 birders from around the state searched the lakes,
wetlands, woods and prairies of Lac Qui Parle, Big Stone and Yellow Medicine
counties finding 147 species of birds. Cold wet weather 2 days before and the
later date for the weekend resulted in a good variety of, waterfowl,

Today at 2 PM I refound the Black-necked Stilt previously found by Garret Wee.
It flew into the north end of Lone Tree Lake which is located NE of Cottonwood
in Lyon County. Also present were 3 Marbled Godwit, 3 Greater Yellowlegs, many
Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral SP, Dunlin, and many species
There is a Yellow-rumped Warbler fall out at the mud flats at the Tacoma field
on highway 32. I counted over 130.
Also 124 Pectoral Sp, 46 Lesser Yellowlegs, one Greater Yellowlegs, one Dunlin

Sunday I visited Salt Lake and areas east to Hadenville WMA then south to
Prairie Marsh Farm.
At Salt Lake there were thousands of water fowl including over 1,000 Northern
Shovelers, 100 Ruddy Duck, Lesser and Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, A. Coots,
Teals, Gadwall and one A. Widgeon. Also !00

This morning I was blessed with a flock of 12 Wild Turkeys in our yard, the
males gobbling and in display (although the younger males need to work on it)!
I also had a flyover of two Trumpeter Swans, possibly the nesting pair from
Crane Lake next to Ridgedale.

Two Harbors. The bird is in the ditch north of the Holiday gas station on the
south east side of Two Harbors and on the north side of 61.

Yesterday afternoon we had 3 Baltimore Orioles at one time. We have two
feeders, one in front and one in back of our house. Two orioles were mature
and one no t yet in full breeding plumage.
Also 5 White-throated, 2 Song and 1 Chipping Sparrow to go with 6 Gold and 6
House Finch.

Last weekend over 100 birders from around the state searched the lakes,

This morning around 9:30 at Prairie Marsh Farm in west central LQP County we
had a flock of over 129 White-throated Sparrows land in our farm yard. This
flock also included FOY 2 White-crowned Sparrows, 2 Pine Siskin, one Lincoln's
and one Harris's Sparrow. One hour later on our way to Salt
3 PM recent arrival of shore birds to the south shore of Salt Lake in Western
Lac Qui Parle County. 300 + including 5 Willet, 20 + Long- billed Dowitcher, 4
Wilson's Phalarope, 4 Dunlin, 2 Greater Yellow-legs.

This morning Jason Frank and myself traveled around western Lac Qui Parle and
Yellow Medicine county under clear skies and 70 degree weather. Flocks of
White- fronted (more than 10,000) and Snow Geese (more than 2,000) were
migrating on winds of 10 to 15 mph. All lakes and sloughs were loaded
Carver Co. 4 mile west of St. Bonifacius on state Hwy 7 turn south on Co Rd 10

Last weekend the 40th annual Salt Lake Birding Weekend took place in Lac Qui
Parle, Big Stone, and northern Yellow Medicine counties. Over 90 birders from
around the state met at 7 AM at the Marietta American Legion. Over the three
day weekend we found 143 different species, 133 on Saturday,
Around 6 PM today I had a nice warbler wave in our neighborhood south of 394
and west of County Rd 73.

Very windy today, typical for for this area. 1,000's of ducks and geese still
in the area particularly at Salt Lake, the south section of Sweetwater WMA and
at Hadenville WMA.

On Saturday around 11 AM I reported finding a pair of Blue Grosbeaks in SW LQP
County. Both birds flew west about 200 feet where the Male perched on the upper
branch of a brush pile with the female just below. In good light I got a great
look at both of them, the male in beautiful adult
Sunday morning I birded around Salt Lake in western LQP County. A few shore
birds were present as the dryer weather of late has increased the width of the
shoreline mud flats. Most interesting besides the number of Wilson's
Phalarope's and the Black Tern's acrobatic flying was the Eared Grebes
Yesterday at 4 PM we located a Blue Grosbeak previously found by Josh Wallestad
at the Danube brush pile in Renville County! Today in LQP county around 11 AM I
found a pair of Blue Grosbeaks north of 150 St on 127 Ave S on the west side of
the road near a brush pile. 30 minutes later I
Sunday Morning Marsha Moreen and I found the Eurasian Sparrow located by Doug
Kieser and Scott Meyer on Saturday in Yellow Medicine County. It was difficult
to get a real good look at it with the heavy foliage of the cottonwood tree
next to the bridge. We also saw 2 male house Sparrows at the

live just south of Crane Lake and yesterday Mary Lou heard and saw them flying
overhead. 6 weeks ago they ( or a different pair) were seen at the same place.
There was also a Common Loon and a Great Egret present.
Today Mary Lou, Marsha Moreen and I birded Westwood Hills Nature Center in
Golden Valley, our feeders in Minnetonka, and this evening I walked around Big
Willow park in Minnetonka. We saw a total of 58 species.

Two interesting first of the year birds near hwy's 100 and 394, a Turkey
Vulture and a Peregrine Falcon seen around 1:30 PM.
At Big Willow Park in Minnetonka 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglets and one Black-capped
Chickadee moving thru in a little wave. Also a total of 7 Chipping Sparrows and
one Song
Today at Crane Lake, east of Ridgedale Mall and on the south side of 394, I
found a single Trumpeter Swan. There was also around 100 ducks and geese but it
was strange to see just one swan.

Even with the 3 of snow yesterday I have had some fun birding.
Yesterday at noon I went out to fill my bird feeders in anticipation of the
storm. I heard a Barred Owl in the cedar tree next to our garage. It flew out
to chase a Crow which was harassing it. 30 minutes later it was calling from
Big Willow Park, Minnetonka
First of all when leaving at 5:30 to walk the dog at Big Willow, I forgot my
binoculars!
So it will just be a brisk walk of 2 miles in a beautiful place.
Toward the end of our walk we were along a wooded path beside Minnehaha Creek
when a small bird landed not six
I just returned from western Lac Qui Parle county where the waterfowl migration
is well underway and the shorebird migration is just starting. But no Ruddy
Ducks!

I visited Purgatory Creek Park in Eden Prairie today around 1:30. There was a

We were in western LQP county over the weekend to open our farm house at
Prairie Marsh Farm.
On Friday there was 2 inches of snow on the ground with little open water
except creeks and some flooded fields. There were numerous large flocks of
White-fronted Geese with smaller flocks of Canada
Today I saw our FOY Sharp-shinned Hawk feeding at the trough of life (a Junco).
Also some Goldfinches are half bright yellow.

Sunday evening at Big Willow Park in Minnetonka on Minnehaha Creek we located a
pair of Eastern Bluebirds. This is the earliest I have seen E Bluebirds at Big
Willow.

Starting two weeks ago we have had an amazing number of Gold and House Finches
coming to our 14 feeders and heated bird baths in Minnetonka near Ridgedale.
Yesterday I counted 115 birds at one time, high counts were
87 American Goldfinches
25 House Finches
also 8 N Cardinals
4 Mourning Doves

For some unknown reason I forgot to report the best bird of the July 4th visit
to Salt Lake.
At the north west corner of Salt Lake on the MN side I had an adult Lark
Sparrow pop up out of the grass and perch for 1 minute on some higher
vegetation. I was able to see the contrasting facial
In the morning off July 4 at Salt Lake in western Lac Qui Parle County I found
an interesting assortment of shorebirds and others.
Along the south shore as viewed from the observation platform I found

Great action this morning at our feeders in Miinnetonka
Two new yard birds, yesterday Gray-cheeked Thrush and this morning a pair of
Indigo Buntings

time 2 Blue Jays, Goldfinches, male Cardinal and Chipping Sparrow. A

Sunday morning I birded around Salt Lake which is on the South Dakota border in
western LQP County.
All regular species of ducks still present other than Golden Eye.

This afternoon from 1:30 to 2:30 I had a warbler wave of over 75 in the tops of
oak and pine trees. There were mostly Yellow-rumped, also 12 Nashville, 2
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, 3 Tennessee, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 2 Northern
Orioles. On the ground were Palm Warblers, 5 Harris's, 1

A friend who stayed at Prairie Marsh Farm after the weekend produced a short

Yesterday at 6 PM there was a good warbler wave of around 100 warblers making
their way through budding willows throughout the park. This Minnetonka park is
located west of county road 73 (Hopkins Crossroad) and can be accessed from
either Cedar Lake road or Minnetonka Blvd. I found primarily

Saturday in western LQP county was a cool sunny day with 7 of recent snow
still on the ground. Most wetlands had some open water with large areas still
covered with ice.

Deb and Bill Frank reported seeing an adult Snowy Owl on Saturday at 3 PM, 2
