Hello: This morning around 6:30 a small wave was in our backyard here in
Austin along Turtle Creek. Among the warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
there appeared to be a Western Tanager. The light was poor with clouds but I
could see the bird was larger than a warbler and I could see the
Hello Fellow Birders: I have to write a note about this. It will be ten years
ago this spring/summer when it was announced that Ivory-billed Woodpeckers had
been found in Arkansas. The euphoria didn't last to long as experts said the
video was a Pileated, not Ivory-billed. I believe a
Hello:
Seven to ten days ago a Gray-cheeked thrush collided with our front
window. I heard the sound and quickly got up to see if anything needed help.
Sure enough there sat a thrush on the courtyard brick, stunned but alive. I
went out and walked up to it and it appeared fine
Birders: Like all of us I hate it when a bird collides with one of our windows
or any window anywhere. I have decals up on the most likely ones they strike
here. Imagine my surprise when a Nighthawk just struck our kitchen window.
Luckily it wasn't a loud strike. I grabbed my gloves to see
Hello: On our walk this morning I counted 75 Ruddy Ducks in a large raft on
the southwest corner of Lake Harriet in Hennepin county. This was around 8:45
a.m.
Thanks, Robert Jessen

Hello: We had around 30 Turkey Vultures over our home early in the evening of
April 1st. I assumed our resident ones had returned. They were around
yesterday too. Just now, around 6:45 p.m. on April 3rd, we had around 60
Turkey Vultures over our homes along Turtle Creek in southwest Austin.
Boundary Waters Canoe Area: Early 80's, late summer, south of Poplar Lake,
probably Caribou or Gaskin Lake. Canoe trip, us and another couple. While
using the designated throne by the designated camping spot several Spruce
Grouse walked right by me, much to my surprise. Boy are they quiet.
Hello: Google mapping Laforet Drive shows a street close by to the south call
Acorn Ridge. Wouldn't that be ironic if indeed the Acorn Woodpecker is there
in the area.

Hello: This might be preaching to the choir but if you haven't been checking
the M.O.U website and reviewing the pictures under the headings of showcase and
recently seen you are missing some real treasures. While all of them are very
good the recent picture of the Short-eared Owl by Robert
Good Morning: Any idea or thoughts on why it died? Looked healthy in the
pictures taken saturday. Did any of the birders seeing it saturday think the
bird was hurting or ill? What does a bird like that eat? I believe its an
ocean bird so can it live on fresh water?

Good Morning: Lots of notes of nesting Siskins on the Iowa list and Wisconsin
list. Thus I wasn't surprised to see Pine Siskins building a nest in one of
our backyard spruces. It was around 10 feet high. It seemed like the female
built the nest and two males would chase her around the
Large flock of Turkey Vultures this evening at 6:25, around 32 birds, give or
take a couple, right over our home in SW Austin. We have a large summer
resident flock but of course don't know if this group is those returning.
Seems a little early for this large a group. We have had a couple of
Good Afternoon: Just had a nice flock of around 40 White-Winged Crossbills in
the 3 large evergreen trees we share with our neighbors here in our front yard
in Austin, Mower County. Were here for a few minutes, eating and chattering
away. Most then flew southwest around 200 feet to another
Good Morning: The Snowy Owl was observed this morning, monday, January 26th,
around 10:00, at the previously described location. Perched on top of utility
pole on 640th Avenue and then flew to a pole on 300th street, east of 640th.
If coming from Highway 56, might be best to take 290th
Good Morning: We have been observing large groups of Pine Siskins off and on
in our backyard around our bird feeder and our several clump white birch trees
the past few weeks. Today they were dripping from the trees and feeders. We
estimated a minimum of 100 Pine Siskins, probably more.
