A very cooperative Lark Sparrow was foraging the roadside of the marsh late
this morning, giving ample time to examine its harlequin facial pattern and
colors. I had just been to Spring Lake Park Reserve on Pine Bend
Trail, looking for this species without success, though it was a treat to
hear

A male lark sparrow visited the "backyard" of the Lac qui Parle DNR
Headquarters this morning. Not sure how long he'll stick around, but if folks
are interested and we see him again we can let you know.

Looking at a handful of flooded fields this morning in Washington County,
but found zero shorebirds. Damp is maybe a better word than flooded, as
standing water was fairly minimal and when there was some I only found
geese and mallards. However, at the corner of Lake Elmo Ave. and Hudson
Rd.
At the archery unit of Spring Lake Park Reserve today, at around 1:00, a
male Lark Sparrow perched in a small deciduous tree close to the trail, and
burst into full song. Both his sound and his bold, brightly-marked plumage
were stunning in beauty, rivaling the appeal, for me, of LeConte's and
Lark Sparrow! Taking a mud puddle bath.

For some unknown reason I forgot to report the best bird of the July 4th visit
to Salt Lake.
At the north west corner of Salt Lake on the MN side I had an adult Lark
Sparrow pop up out of the grass and perch for 1 minute on some higher
vegetation. I was able to see the contrasting facial
Today I saw a singing Lark Sparrow presumably on territory. I marked the
exact spot with a yellow “thumbtack” on my eBird list:

I had a surprising new yard bird today: a Lark Sparrow. I was watching the
Song and Field Sparrows trying to figure out if/where they were nesting. The
area was clear-cut under power lines in early spring last year (2011).
Everyone in the neighborhood was dismayed because they had never
Despite 4th of July Weekend crowds on the trail, Erika and I photographed a
Lark Sparrow exactly at mile 3 east of Cannon Falls on the Cannon River Bike
trail on Saturday. We see them along the trail most every year.
We also photographed a very large Fox Snake. See today's blog:
Seen today at Camden SP at the Horse Camp.
Two additional reliable locations are 1) the undeveloped area near the

Yesterday I found a Lark sparrow at Bunker Hills park in Anoka Co.
The bird was seen about 1/4 mile SE of the parking lot at the main park road
and the road into the camping area. I had followed the cross country ski trail
and was at the bottom of a hill when the bird flew across the trail,

While surveying a priority atlas block near Dorset in southern Hubbard
County on May 22, I found a pair of lark sparrows on private open
farmland. They were still present today. Usually just the male
(singing) is present, suggesting that this is a nesting pair and the
female is incubating. If
