Does anyone have any thoughts about the absence/presence of shorebirds within,
say, a 75-mile radius of the metro area this spring? It seems like they’ve
been largely absent this year or I’ve slept through their various migrations.
I don’t know whether drought and further environmental

Being a relative newby, I’m perplexed by many of my photos, at distance, in the
failing light last evening. If anyone is willing to review a few shots I’d be
happy to parse some around. The other birders I met included a white-rumped
sandpiper among the spotted but I haven’t figured that out

Carver and eastern Sibley Counties. My total July count for Least Sandpiper

On Tuesday Scott King and I saw about a dozen Pectoral Sandpipers and a few
Dunlin at the Randolph Industrial Park in Dakota Co. Both yellowlegs were
also present. We did not see any Least Sandpipers.
The Dunlin showed only the barest traces of breeding plumage (and one

There are a few late season shorebirds this morning at the Sleepy Eye WTP's,
which includes:
2 Dunlin
3 Long-billed Dowitchers
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
1 Pectoral Sandpiper
2 Least Sandpipers
These numbers change daily. Yesterday morning Mike Oetken and I saw a Merlin
and a Peregrine Falcon
This morning hundreds of shorebirds were taking advantage of mudflats and
shallow water of the Crane Creek wetlands in western Carver County. Most
were pectoral and least sandpipers, with good numbers of stilt sandpiper
(about 20), greater and lesser yellowlegs, killdeer, a few semipalmated
I walked along Park Point after work this afternoon... Found nine Baird's
Sandpipers, a Semipalmated Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover and other
non-shorebirds flying around.

At around noon today, I found a small flock of shorebirds on a wet field on
Alta Ave., on the west side of the road, between 302nd St.W, and Cty 94 (Cannon
River Blvd.) Recent rain has made this field hospitable to shorebirds again.
There is vegetation growing on the mudflat, and most of the

this morning. (Unfortunately I cannot find directions for the McLeod County
site at the moment...all I remember is that it was along MN Hwy 7.)
The McLeod County shorebird spot had poor diversity (5 species) of 100-ish

shorebirds at the west end of Rice Lake. Most of these were Greater and
Lesser Yellowlegs along with a handful of Dunlin, one Least Sandpiper, nine

It's a new housing development ( Trophy Lakes IV) that has no houses built
yet. A shallow artificial lake/pond was put in, rather u -shaped, with sandy

check the one spot I felt has the greatest potential here in Kandiyohi
county. Sure enough: 6 lesser yellowlegs, 5 greater yellowlegs, one
pectoral sandpiper, one golden plover (entirely in basic plumage), 16
killdeer.
The ice went out on the Sleepy Eye sewage ponds just this week and some early
migrant shorebirds were found there this morning. Most were on the far eastern
pond where a bunch of vegetation has washed up along the western edge of that
