I found a pair of (first county-record?) Great-tailed Grackles in
Pipestone County on Monday, 5/7. The location is in the northeastern
corner of the county. From the corner of CR18 (south from Ruthton) and
CR8 (east of Holland), go east 1.2 miles on CR86. The birds were in the

This afternoon (Tuesday) I stopped by Arbor Lakes off of Hemlock in Maple
Grove. In the lake behind the Arbor Lakes Medical building I found six
Caspian Terns and a Forsters Tern. On the shore of the small pond to the
north of the parking lot I found a Willet. In the sand hills of the
County, the other record was
back in May, 2003.

This morning at 10:45 a.m. while looking unsuccessfully for the White-eyed Vireo
at the Bass Ponds, I heard an unfamiliar ratchity call note from a bird flying
about in the undergrowth. Turned out it was a summer tanager that looked very
much like the first spring male in
comparison.

Thanks to Chet Meyers, and Jim and Eloise Ryan, who were letting me tag
along on the unsuccessful search for the white-eyed vireo, I finally got
to see a summer tanager this morning, at Bass Ponds. (As the song says,
You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need.)

The bobolinks arrived this afternoon here in Pomroy Township, Kanabec

About 8:50 this morning at the second walkway (the first long one) from the
parking lot along the bluff trail at Old Cedar Bridge, Eloise Jasken and I
saw a Cerulean Warbler that was singing softly about halfway up the bluff. I
checked back at noon and wasn't able to relocate it. Other FOY birds
It seems I may have misidentified two of the birders who helped me see
the summer tanager this morning--not to mention confusing the two people
whose names I DID use. My thanks go to Jim Pomplun and Eloise Jaskin, as
well as Chet Meyers. I hope they'll chalk it up to lifer enthusiasm,

I apologize for the poor quality of these. The light and shooting distance
were horrible, but they were the best I could do At least they are diagnostic.
These were taken from 3:15-4:11pm, Wednesday, May 9, 2007. The bird took
flight with the most of the flock at 4:11pm.
