Tues evening, April 13, I heard my first Common Loon call of the season
on Devil Track Lake. On Wednesday morning, the loon was visible on the
lake, which is ice-free very early this year.

I have been enjoying working on my blog, if, for no other reason, I have
been learning a lot of new things about birds. Over the past three
mornings, I've banded 7 White-throated Sparrows. I always knew they came in
bright and dusky morphs, but the biology of these morphs turns out to

An AM exercise walk at the archery unit brought a second FOY warbler:
one female Black-and-White, combing the tree limbs for breakfast.

About a half hour ago I saw an Eastern Screech Owl in my neighborhood in SW
Sleepy Eye actively flycatching for insects from tree branches, something I
have never witnessed before. Pretty cool.

At about 3pm today I found an apparent Bean Goose with 18 Greater
White-fronted Geese NW of Madison, Lac qui Parle County. It was at a wetland
on the west side of 211th Ave about a quarter mile south on Hwy75 (section
12, Arena Twp.) adjacent to the Madrena WMA.
