[mou-net] E Screech Owl, not present, Minnetonka, Hennepin Co

2011-02-01 Thread George B Skinner
At 8:00 am I checked our video camera and the owl was
not in the box.

Yesterday, with the snow falling, the owl stayed in the box
later than normal. It was still in the box at 6 P.M.. It was
out when I checked again at 6:30 P.M..

I won't post again until I see the owl.

Re: [mou-net] [mnbird] Yard Observations

2011-02-01 Thread Larry Sirvio
An interesting observation about robins eating snow. The word from the
experts is that robins don't eat snow and need open water to survive in
colder areas.

[mou-net] Crow family together again?

2011-02-01 Thread Larry Sirvio
After feeding 2 crows all fall and winter (rarely, a third crow would show up
too) there have been 4 at the feeding station for the last 3 days. It appears
that the adults are with the youngsters again. Maybe finding food is more
difficult for the adults with the deep snow.
I'm pretty sure these are the same adults that have visited us in previous
years because they don't fly off from the yard trees when I go outside to leave
them some food.

[mou-net] Unidentified gull at Canal Park (photos), plus scenic winter/bird photos

2011-02-01 Thread Erik Bruhnke
Yesterday afternoon I visited Canal Park, followed by about 2 miles of
hiking through the beautiful Superior Hiking Trail, adjacent to Hartley
Nature Center here in Duluth. Among the Herring Gulls at Canal Park was a
unique gull... In the field, it looked Herring Gull-sized, however the
overall age of the bird was something that seemed to cause confusion about,
can I even narrow down the age of this bird, and can I even narrow it down
to a species? I was leaning towards Herring Gull, but would appreciate
feedback, if anybody is interested in sharing thoughts/commentary. The gull
of interest had a dark eye, partially yellowish bill, pink legs, and had the
overall plumage of a 2nd-cycle Herring Gull. The underside of the wings
looked surprisingly pale too. Photos of this bird and more are below. Thanks
for any help you can provide. Enjoy! (yesterday's album can be found at
