Last Friday (4/6/12) we banded 83 Dark-eyed Juncos at Carpenter Nature Center,
(CNC) which is in Washington County along the St. Croix River. We caught only
one Junco that was banded, which means that all the Juncos were not previously
banded at CNC so were new arrivals. Birds are banded each Friday at CNC in the
a.m., so we have been trapping Juncos for some weeks.
Earlier in the fall we banded more males than females and last Friday we banded
twice as many females as males. For about 30% or more we could not determine
sex this time of year. Sex determination was based on the length of the wing
cord using criteria established by Pyle.
