This seems like one of the best reasons why we should all be upset with the
Gang of Five on the Park Board right now. Having Gurban go through the same
process as the other candidates would have allowed Board members to consider
this information and allowed the public to comment on it.
Maybe it's stories like this that led the Gang of Five to engage in their
shenanigans? If so, I wonder what other dirt there might be out there about
Gurban that we didn't get a chance to consider?
Personally, I don't care much about the gambling aspect of this story. My
concern is with Gurban's lack of oversight and how willing we was to just
delegate this responsibility to someone else and apparently pay them far
more than necessary to do so. That's not the kind of management I want from
my Minneapolis Parks Superintendent. With all of the budget issues facing
our park system, the last thing we need is someone who doesn't take
oversight seriously and who apparently places a higher value on giving his
friends business than he does on making sure organizational funds are spent
wisely.
