[mssms] RE: 1702 Express Install Files

2017-09-13 Thread Kamerman, Sol
I upgraded to 1706 a few weeks back. I enabled express updates and I am not
seeing the express folders being created when downloading the patches. I have
made all of the modifications necessary including the client settings and it
doesn’t appear to be working correctly even with the latest build and client.
Is anyone else seeing this? Are the certain conditions that have to be met in
order for this to work?

Hi all,

Do we know if this is fixed now in 1706? I’ve held off enabling express updates
and now that we’re on 1706 I’ll enable it if it’s working obviously.

Not really a ‘bug’ – just a lack of understanding how BITS works by whoever
wrote that piece..

‘Should be fixed in the 1706 Production release although it’s still broken in
the TP.

Can’t speak for WSUS standalone – but don’t think Express updates apply to Win7
anyway?

I’ve seen various threads complaining about performance though – so I would
wait a while before enabling this again.

Should be fixed in the next version of ConfigMgr. Known issue.

Basically you get a BITS job for each “delta” in the patch, making it very
slow… look at it as “free” bandwidth management! 

Is this “bug” specific to the SCCM SUP implementation of Express Updates? We
recently enabled Express Updates on our WSUS server (servicing mainly W7 OS),
and I am less than impressed on the results. It seems that clients take longer
to download/install updates now than they did before.

We are having issues getting Windows 10 distributed to slower sites, so we
reached out to Microsoft, which suggested using Express updates. We turned it
on and during testing experienced severe performance issues. It took 40 hours
to download and install patches using Express Updates. Another machine on the
same subnet, same DP, NOT using express updates took 15 minutes to download,
install, and reboot. Not to mention the package grew from 4GB to 24 GB.

We reached out to Microsoft with our testing results and expressed our
concerns; they confirmed “there was a bug that they found that causes clients
to create numerous BITS jobs (one for each byte range for the deltas to the
package). Each of those jobs has it's own overhead, and latency amplifies
that.” They did confirm the fix for express updates is in escrow for the next
Current Branch release, which should be in the next month or so.

As others have stated Express updates are not ready for prime-time.

Is anyone using this feature in SCCM 1702? I was really looking forward to
getting this up and running after the 1702 upgrade but I am a little
disappointed with the results I am seeing.

I understand the initial download is larger and I am okay with that, my patch
package jumped from 13.1GB to nearly 44GB so the 2-3X size increase was pretty
accurate. My issue is the time that it is taking to install the cumulative
update, it is taking almost 3+ hours on my test machines. The machines are all

Cumulative update in July. Now, with the August updates the systems are coming
up as not required when it should be required. I checked the Deferupgrade

is required. I am stumped. Log files look okay. Does anyone have any ideas

[mssms] RE: Help! WSUS maintenance, DB reindex?

2017-08-08 Thread Kamerman, Sol
I ran into this a few weeks ago. There was a lot that needed to be done, but
once completed everything came back to normal. I increased memory pool,
throttled the CPU (35%) so I can at least work on the server and clean things
up. The WSUS cleanup wizard would crash all the time, but keep doing it until
it runs all the way through. I also found that some of the scripts for db
cleanup and indexing for the WSUS DB worked well. Also, if you are adding a
bunch of new systems like I was, the scans was killing the server... A
combination of all of these things were causing problems. Also, check your
event viewer log files to see if the services in the WSUS app pool are failing.
This was happening to me and my systems we always trying to scan which also
was a contributing factor to performance issues.

Good luck with this, I took me about 3 days to get everything back to normal.
Reach out to me directly if you need any help.

Hello,

CM2012 R2 SP1 (yes, we're upgrading soon)

Our MP that hosts WSUS is really taking a performance hit lately. RAM was
running almost 100% constantly at one point, we were able to add more RAM and
dedicate a chunk of it to the WSUS pool in IIS. Now the CPU is pegging. It's
all the WSUS pool in IIS. I tried limiting the CPU usage setting, but it's
still running really high.

I would like to know if some has a definitive guide for cleaning up the WSUS DB
and possibly reindexing it to hopefully clear up some of these issues? I see a
lot of results in Google, and I want to play this very safe.

TIA!

All:

I have been doing a lot of reading over the last several weeks and I still
haven't come to a conclusion on which direction I want to go in regards to
which Windows 10 version I should install in the coming months. I currently
have 1800 laptops on 1511 CBB, and will be upgrading these laptops to 1607 CBB
over the next few weeks. This is challenging in it of itself because the
update takes about an hour or more and is extremely disruptive to our
end-users. I am fighting with the option to move to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB
because all of the articles I have read about this particular version and how
it's designed for mission critical systems i.e. ATM's, or factory type systems.
The advantage I see is that I don't have to worry about upgrading these
systems every 12 to 18 months and the disruption to the user is minimal. We
have a total of 3,500 systems consisting or laptops and desktops. Our laptop
hardware gets changed out every two years to a new model, and our desktops
models are every 3 and may possibly change to 2 years.

Here are some questions I have:

Since we have a more aggressive hardware cycle is it worth going to LTSB or
just stay with CBB?

How are other admins handling the cycle change when they are dealing with many
systems that will need be updated? Over 3,500 and up to 100K depending on the
size of your company i.e. disrupting users, on-prem / off-prem?

If we don't care for using the app store or having the Edge browser installed,
are there any other drawbacks from using LTSB?

Is Microsoft really going to stop creating security updates for 1511 when it
goes end of life? Are you concerned about this if your company isn't ready to
go to 1607 and you need stay on 1511 past its life cycle?

Have you made the decision to go to LTSB and not look back?

Any other info you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sol

Adam,

Are you using Bitlocker or MBAM? I have narrowed it down to being an MBAM
issue, but not sure if it will show the same issue when Bitlocker is enabled.
Is it possible to bring this offline? Not sure if it’s okay to reach out
directly to someone per the listserv rules. Maybe we can share what we are
doing and then contact Microsoft to bring it to their attention if we both have
same problem.

That’s what I thought. I didn’t think Bitlocker should interfere with this and
that the setup/install process should take care of it.

Yes, I have installed the package to other systems without MBAM and it has
worked fine that leads me to believe that my SCCM/WSUS is configured correctly.

Have you deployed 1607 to anything else? The way your email is written makes it
seem like it is the first time you've had SCCM pull this update down. Have you
done all the fun things to make WSUS/SCCM ready for the ESD files etc...?

All:

Just pinging the group to get some ideas as I am all out. I am trying to
upgrade a laptop that currently has W10 1511, I was able to download the 1607
Feature Update from my SCCM Server (1606, I haven't upgraded to latest Branch
but will soon). The test system downloads the file, but when it tries to
install I get an error code 8x80070490. I've done a lot of Googling but
nothing has come of it. The only thing that has change with that the target
system is that I have enabled Bitlocker using MBAM 2.5sp1. Could this be
causing the patch to fail the install? I have tried suspending bitlocker but
still the same error. I am trying to avoid disabling BL all together, but
before I do this I thought I would reach out to the group.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I am using the Windows 10 Servicing Feature to update the system. Will I need
to use a TS to update the system to 1607 if I have BL enabled? Is there
another log I can provide to help troubleshoot?

Is the ‘Listen All’ option set to ‘Yes’ Under SQL SERVER NETWORK CONFIG ->
Protocols FOR *

Change to NO if it is.

I looked through my old notes and that is one of the settings I had to change
because I had multiple NICS and the comms were messed up.

[mssms] RE: SQL Server Tcp is enabled and set to Static port

2017-01-04 Thread Kamerman, Sol
Did you enabled Named Pipes on the SQL server? Is there a firewall turn on the
SQL box? Turn off if it is and run prereq again see what happens.

Just some thoughts ☺

Also, the recommended install is to install SQL on the same box and everyone on
the list would agree. There may be business reasons as to why you can’t so you
may not be able to. I had my previous SCCM environment on a remote SQL and it
was a pain to install and manage. I moved to same box during my latest upgrade
to 1606 and it works so much better. Have you thought about moving to the same
box?

I was able to resolve the issue. I noticed that the permissions of the share

WSUS to SCCM. I am not sure why it was working fine for the last several
weeks, but as of now it is able to delete the content folders.

Thanks for the reply Sherry. It's been 2 days since the script was run. Still
nothing.

Was your lab running 1511 or something newer?

My colleague has told me he's seeing a version check in one of the logs and
thinks that's what is denying us access to 1610. So I am just trying to confirm
that we, at 1511, cannot go directly to 1610.

This changed from ConfigMgr CB 1511 to 1602 I believe which is why you are not

I would think you'd need to set your Servicing Options for it to detect and say

I may be wrong...

What have you set for your Servicing Options? You can choose between CB, CBB,
etc. with a time delay based on days. That may be effecting it - not totally
sure as I haven't played with this yet.

update hours after the deployment took effect. I've also manually updated the
client, refreshed the ConfigMgr client machine policy and run update

I am at a point where I don’t know what else to look at. Do any of you have
SCCM successfully upgrading machines to 1607 via the Windows 10 Servicing
method?

Interesting, at first this what I was planning on doing, but I am not seeing
this in the All Software Updates. I have selected the appropriate Product
Classifications and Products to be downloaded and it hasn’t showed up. I
applied all patches related to the WSUS issue as well. Are there any other
reasons why I’m not seeing in All Software Updates?

I deploy them just like a regular software update. That way I don’t have all
of the extra languages and such downloaded. Working so far on the machine we
have upgraded.

I would think you'd need to set your Servicing Options for it to detect and say
that an update applies/needed to a specific machine...

I may be wrong...

[mssms] can't see KB2919355 in All Software Updates

2014-04-08 Thread Kamerman, Sol
For some reason I can't see this update in the list. Before I start checking
off things on the list I thought I would ask if anyone knows which product I
need checked to see it. I can see Windows 8 updates etc... but I might be
missing something.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

I don't see it either in WSUS or SCCM. If I point a 2012R2 server directly to
MU I don't see it either.

I thought I read somewhere that Microsoft was going to roll it out slowly
today, so perhaps we will need to check back later?
