Thanks everyone for the log4j hints. i have working now. i am used to
initilizing the logging from a standalone application (and applet) so the
server side config was slightly confusing.
On to other problems:

There seems to be bugs with the path processing done by Resin, war's that
work fine in Tomcat are hit or miss in Resin. I have also had trouble with
image paths and tag-lib paths. Bottomline after spending hours Saturday
In another note there is the suggestion to try a fresh installation of Resin
3.0. I will probably give it a try. But note that the project/class utilizes
the menu part as labs/work.
