Would it be possible to monitor a website, whether the web site is up or not
using nagios. I have nagios sset up to monitor the databases

The problem that I am running into
./check_http -w 5 -c 10 -H www.mysite.com works fine
but what we have is subdomains
if I do
/check_http -w 5 -c 10 -H www.mysite.com/subDomain/index.html
it does not work

I got the following error
node name or service name not known
HTTP CRITICAL - Unable to open TCP socket
I could able to resolve it using the following
/check_http -w 5 -c 10 -H
Try
check_http -w 5 -c 10 -H www.mysite.com -u /subDomain/index.html
Here you find the man of check_http, describing -u usage, first result
