Debate continues over school logo in Marquette

MARQUETTE (October 6)

What do the Atlanta Braves represent or any other team logo? Is it the same
or somehow different from the Redmen mascot in Marquette? Those were just
some of the issues addressed by some 90 people attending a seminar on North
American mascots.
Those in the audience heard Upper Michigan Native Americans talk about
their feelings on how such logos were insulting and demeaning. The group
then broke into small discussion circles designed to further promote thought
and understanding.
Even though organizers said the idea of the event was to only discuss,
one person who was abivilant towards the issue changed her mind.
"I think it showed that a mascot depicting a Native American symbol is
very sacred to the Native Americans. It's not meant for recreation, sports
or enjoyment. It's actually a religious symbol," Amy Armstrong-Markantony,
who changed her mind, said.
Such definitive answers were not reached by all.
"And at what point do you get enough people to say 'no it's a bad thing
and we should get rid of it,' where's that bad point? It's a very difficult
thing," David Lucas, who attended the forum, said.
The discussion was sponsored by two Northern Michigan University
diversity groups and the campus association for Native American students.
