Mix in technology and extension activities. Add a roomful of smiles and a year full of learning. You've got the perfect recipe for a motivating project in which students collect and share information with another class about their environment. ------------------- Project Details ------------------- Project Level: Basic Curriculum Area: Community Interest, History and Social Studies, Information Technology, Language, Science Technologies Used: Email Full Project Description: We are interested in comparing and contrasting seasonal data with other classrooms in environments/climates different than ours. Students will observe changes in a specific tree, temperature, seasons, and times the sun rises and sets. They will share findings via e-mail. Activity #1 Tree Observation Choose a tree in your school community. It should be a deciduous tree. (Not an evergreen). Have the class make observations about the tree such as: * Shape of leaves * Amount of leaves * Compare to other trees * Color of leaves * Color of bark * Trunk (shape and size) * Branches (lots or few, long or short) * Fruit? * Have any leaves fallen off yet? * Shape of tree * Any signs of animal life? Have students draw the tree and record any observations of it on the tree journal template. Choose between 2-5 student drawings and scan or send them. Take a photo of the class tree and attach a digital image or send by mail. Activity #2 Temperature Record the temperature for one week at the same time each day. Chart the temperature on the template on the web page. Activity #3 What clothes do I wear? Have students draw a picture of themselves wearing the appropriate clothing for that season. Choose between 2-5 student drawings and scan or send by mail. Activity #4 Sunrise/Sunset Record the sunrise and sunset times for each day of the observation week on the template on the web page. For specific sunrise and sunset times in your area, you can visit: www.sunrisesunset.com Objectives: Students will observe, record, and measure seasonal changes for one week during the summer, fall, winter, and spring seasons. Students will... * Observe and record the changes in one tree throughout the seasons * Observe and record changes in clothing throughout the seasons * Observe and record changes in the temperature, sunrise and sunset * Report and communicate results to participating school communities through the use of technology * Analyze data, make comparisons, and draw conclusions from data received from other communities ------------------- Project Registration Information -------------------------------- Project Email Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registration Acceptance Dates: 7/14/02 to 9/30/02 Number of Classrooms: 50 Age Range: 7 to 10 years Target Audience: Anyone Project URL: http://www.lakelandschools.org/EDTECH/Seasons/home.htm Registration Instructions: The project will begin in early September to gather summer data and will then continue for three additional seasons during the year. -------------------------------- Project Contact Information ---------------------------- Linda Brandon - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Technology Training Coordinator - Lakeland Central School District Shrub Oak, New York US http://lakelandschools.org ---------------------------- _______________________________________________ [EMAIL PROTECTED] - K-12 Project Announcements Unsubscribe at http://www.gsh.org/lists/hilites.html =.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=. Students will conduct a survey to gather data to test this claim. ------------------- Project Details ------------------- Project Level: Basic Curriculum Area: Community Interest, Mathematics, Technology Technologies Used: Email Project Sponsor: None Full Project Description: According to 2001 data, there are about one hundred seven million, ten thousand (107,010,000) occupied households in America. Each of these households probably has at least one appliance. If Kenmore's claim is true, 53,505,00 homes in 2001 had at least one Kenmore appliance. In 1927, Sears Roebuck and Company created its first Kenmore appliance. By 1936, Sears had sold one million laundry appliances. When Kenmore celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1977, it had sold 50 million appliances. Kenmore makes washers, dryers, refrigerators, microwaves, wall ovens, ranges, cooktops, range hoods, dishwashers, grills, compactors, disposals, air conditioners, air cleaners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, hot water dispensers, water filters, water softeners, vacuums, and sewing machines. Through this on-line collaboration project, classrooms across America will participate in gathering data to test Sears' claim that One Out of Two Homes in America has a Kenmore appliance. The questionnaire will be printed from the web site. Each student in the classroom will be asked to survey one household to gather data. The data will be submitted via the project's web site. A database of the results will be updated at least one time per week. Students across the country will be able to analyze the data as it is updated. Students will first be asked to predict if they think Kenmore's claim is valid. In addition, they will be asked if economic or regional factors might affect the purchase of a Kenmore appliance. An activities page will encourage students to role play Sears management and to analyze the data to make decisions regarding manufacturing and marketing issues. Other activities that require a critical look at the data will also be suggested. Resources for other product claims will be made available at the project web site for additional classroom investigations. Objectives: Students will analyze data to determine if an advertised claim is true. Students will make decisions and present recommendations based on data. Students will colloborate with other students across the country via the Internet and email. ------------------- Project Registration Information -------------------------------- Project Email Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registration Acceptance Dates: 9/01/02 to 11/15/02 Number of Classrooms: 20 Age Range: 6 to 19 years Target Audience: National (US) Project URL: http://web.utk.edu/~awatkin3/appliances/ Registration Instructions: Please register at http://web.utk.edu/~awatkin3/appliances/register.html -------------------------------- Project Contact Information ---------------------------- Allison Watkinson - mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Technology Coach - Sarah Moore Greene MTA Knoxville, Tennessee US ---------------------------- _______________________________________________ [EMAIL PROTECTED] - K-12 Project Announcements Unsubscribe at http://www.gsh.org/lists/hilites.html =.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.
