Your chance to participate in a special online Social Studies forum with

Ken Burns is rapidly approaching! The renowned creator of "The Civil
War" will be joining us in TAPPED IN on September 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Eastern time (4:30 p.m. Pacific). TAPPED IN is located at
http://www.tappedin.org. (NOTE: A "time zone friendly" calendar of all

TAPPED IN events can be found at
http://www.tappedin.sri.com/cgi-bin/calendar/calendar.cgi)

PBS plans to re-air the award winning Civil War series beginning
September 22, but you can ask Ken questions about the series, and his
insights into history in this special forum.

Also joining us for the forum will be representatives from PBS, and
WETA, which worked with Burns and Florentine Films to create the series
in 1990. A companion web site with resources, lessons, and other
information about the series is planned to be available at
http://www.pbs.org/civilwar.

Because we are expecting a large crowd for this session, we respectfully

are requiring the following:

People are invited to ask questions of Ken about the series and his
views on the war in advance by "paging" them to Michael Hutchison in
TAPPED IN. Instructions on doing this can be found on the main TAPPED
IN page (http://www.tappedin.org). (Look for information at
http://www.tappedin.org/info/calendar/ssfsept02.html) Questions will be

selected and submitted to Ken before the session so he can prepare for
answers. Questions can be submitted in TAPPED IN 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Questions submitted prior to the forum date have a better
chance of being answered.

In addition, everyone who wishes to participate in the live session MUST

be logged in to TAPPED IN by 7:30 p.m. Eastern (4:30 p.m. Pacific) time
SHARP for a short briefing on how to post questions and maintain proper
decorum in the session. Attendance in the briefing session is required
to help assure that things go as smoothly as possible for everyone.
Once Ken's session begins, no one will be admitted without special
permission.

As always, persons wishing information or having questions about this
session are encouraged to e-mail Michael Hutchison offlist. Don't miss
your chance to participate in online history!

From: "Dennis O'Connor" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'd like you to know of the 21st Century Information Fluency Program, offered by ISLMA
(Illinois School Library Media Association) and IMSA (Illinois Math and Science
Academy) through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Course Begins October 1, 2002. (Additional Sessions planned during 2003.)

This class is designed for librarians, media specialists and curriculum coordinators
working in Illinois. (See below for our Teacher's Course.) During this course you
will be able to sharpen your Internet search skills as you learn to use the IMSA
Search Wizard to locate, evaluate, and integrate web-based information into your
curriculum. The course is designed to help library professionals to take a leadership
role within their schools.

This is an anytime, anywhere course designed to accommodate busy schedules. As an
instructor lead, self-directed, online course, you will complete most portions of the
course at times and locations that are convenient for you. All you need is a computer
with access to the Internet using 56K dial-up service or higher speed dedicated
services.
While group sessions may be held as needed, you, along with your classmates and
facilitator, will determine the best times to meet during the course. You also
determine the best meeting formats which can be face-to-face sessions,
video-conferences, online chat-rooms or conference calls.

We are in the process of posting a Frequently Asked Questions page at
http://wizard.imsa.edu/learn/faq.html which we will update as new items present
themselves. We hope these FAQ's address your questions. If not, please contact
us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call (630) 907-5885.

Again, we would like to receive all applications by September 9 and application can be
completed online at http://wizard.imsa.edu/learn/ . (We will extend the registration
deadline, so don't let the date deter you.)
Free Teacher's Course Begins October 15, 2002

We are also planning a 9 week (45 CDPU) 'Teacher's Version' of this class for
Illinois educators who wish to learn 21st Century Information Fluency skills while
building curriculum materials for their classrooms. The teachers class will be
offered in the Illinois Virtual High School network. Interested? Write Dennis
O'Connor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] This class will be subsidized by our grant and
is free to Illinois educators.

Picturing the Century

One hundred years of photography from the National Archives - "An exhibition
of 20th century photographs from the holdings of the National Archives and
Records Administration.".

Based on an exhibition at the National Archives, Washington, DC March 12,
1999-July 4, 2001

Immigrants arriving at Ellis Island . . . the Wright Brothers fly . . .
building the Empire State Building . . . a Depression-era soup line . .
.
Omaha Beach . . . the mushroom cloud . . . Lyndon Johnson taking the
Presidential oath . . . a young marine in Da Nang . . . footprints on the
Moon . . . war in the Persian Gulf . . .

Old photographs are time machines. They allow us to look back in history,
freeze a moment in time, and imagine ourselves as part of the past.
Through historic photographs we can see how famous and ordinary folk
appeared in both posed and unguarded moments. We can relive great events
and everyday life in exquisite detail. We can learn how people dressed and
carried themselves and sometimes judge their moods. Studying photographs
helps us imagine what it was like when the first airplane took off, when a
landing craft ramp fell open on D-day, or when the first man stepped onto
the Moon.

"Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National
Archives," commemorates the end of the 20th century with a selection of
photographs from the vast and varied holdings of the National Archives and
Records Administration (NARA). NARA photographs vividly capture the
sweeping changes of the last one hundred years. They depict both the
mundane and high political drama, society's failings as well as its
triumphs, war's ugliness as well as its bravery. This exhibition is
arranged in chronological "galleries" as well as seven "portfolios" of
talented photographers well represented in NARA's holdings.
