Busted for DWC: Deliberating While Conservative

"Democrats yesterday conceded that Miguel Estrada is an accomplished lawyer,
but they questioned whether he should be confirmed to the Circuit Court of
Appeals for the District of Columbia, saying he may harbor conservative
views."

- Washington Times, 9/27/02

Breaking Out Big Bertha

"When Joe Lieberman, a Democrat with impeccable partisan credentials, rose
to defend the president (against attacks by Al Gore and Tom Daschle), it was
inevitable that the Democrats would roll out Big Bertha.

"So here was Barbra Streisand, the famous movie star, aging bombshell and
one-time intimate of Bill Clinton, with reassurance and marching orders in a
memo to Dick Gephardt: 'Saddam did not bomb the World Trade Center.'

"...Barb's insights into military strategy always amaze even Hollywood, a
hotbed of geostrategic wisdom (Barb, Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine and Susan
Sarandon comprise the nation's strategic reserve of deep thinking), and she
frets that 'the country's domestic problems' will suffer if the nation goes
to war in the Middle East. All those SUVs in Beverly Hills need as much
gasoline as Saddam and the Saudis can pump."

- Wes Pruden, "Pruden On Politics," 9/27/02

GOP Blowing Yet Another Golden Opportunity

"Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Democratic worthies in Congress face the
ordeal every politician dreads, taking a stand on an important issue
(military action in Iraq). . . . The Democrats offer a fat and stationary
target, but the president's party, as usual, is loath to return fire. The
first instinct of a Republican under attack is always to run, shouting over
his shoulder that 'I'm not as bad as you think.' Then he shoots his buddy
to prove it."

- Wes Pruden, "Pruden On Politics," 9/27/02

Losing the Domestic War on Grannies

"(W)hile the (White House's) focus on offense (against terrorists) is very
sound, this administration appears to have neglected homeland defense and
surrendered to political correctness and timidity in its pursuit.

"Our airport security system is not serious and everyone knows it. In this,
President Bush has apparently given his one Democratic Cabinet member,
Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, the lead, and Mr. Mineta is
politically correct down to his fingertips. Whether it is refusing to
profile passengers or forbidding pilots to be armed, Mr. Mineta has his
priorities backward, and so does this administration on these matters."

- Columnist Mona Charen

Hitchens Tells "Nation" To Shove It

"Christopher Hitchens, longtime maverick columnist for the Nation, is
leaving the liberal weekly publication. . . . Mr. Hitchens said the magazine
'is becoming the voice and the echo chamber of those who truly believe that
John Ashcroft is a greater menace than Osama bin Laden.' "

Huh? There's a Movie?

Jesse Jackson has been trying to revive his tattered image and career this
week by raising a stink over the nation's best-selling movie,
"Barbershop," - which has been described as a positive movie about blacks,
made by blacks, starring blacks - for what JJ claims is a royal dissing of
Rosa Parks and MLK.

But when talk-show host John Williams of WGN-AM radio asked JJ if he'd
actually seen the movie, the reverend was forced to admit he hadn't. But,
"That really doesn't matter. I don't have to jump in hot water to know it
will burn."

We might have to defer to JJ on this one. After his extracurricular love
life and love child became public knowledge, he certainly came to know a
little something about being in hot water.

Amnesty for Lawbreakers?

"The question of amnesty for illegal aliens is a hot topic not only for
politicians in Washington, but also among the thin, green line of U.S.
Border Patrol agents here (in San Diego) and elsewhere along the U.S. Mexico
border.

" 'What the hell are we doing out here?' asked one veteran agent. 'Why don'
t we just pack it in? Amnesty? It's just an open invitation for more
illegal aliens to come into the country, stay low for a while and,
eventually get their citizenship papers.

" 'Who's in charge here?' the agent asked, staring at a group of 11 Mexican
nationals preparing to vault a border fence and head north.

"It's a common theme among Border Patrol field agents from Texas to
California, calling into question pending proposals by both Republicans and
Democrats to grant amnesty or residency status to a growing number of
illegal aliens."

- Jerry Seper, Washington Times, 9/27/02

Alien Nation

You will not read a more shocking account of just how porous America's
borders have become -- and remain -- than in Michelle Malkin's new book
"Invasion."

Based on exhaustive research and interviews with dozens of current and
former immigration officials, Invasion shows how and why every component of
America's immigration system has failed: from kowtowing consular offices, to
unguarded borders and ports of entry, to toothless detention and deportation
policies.

Malkin, one of America's most important young journalists and a
first-generation American of Filipino descent, pulls no punches as she
reveals how foreign enemies get a helping hand from federal immigration
policies created in the name of bureaucratic 'efficiency,' 'customer
service,' political correctness, and plain greed.

You'll be shocked and outraged when you read Michelle Malkin's Invasion.

Taxing Business Into the Poor House

"While it seems that every member of Congress has their own idea how best to
improve the nation's security after Sept. 11, very few of them are willing
to discuss how to pay for it. One who has not shied away is Sen. Ernest
'Fritz' Hollings, D-S.C., who proposed $3.5 billion in new taxes on business
to pay for increased security measures at U.S. ports earlier in the year.

"The U.S. maritime industry currently generates $22 billion in annual
revenues to the federal government through 124 different user fees and
taxes. Strong opposition to the Hollings plan, particularly from the
business community, contributed to the gridlock that stalled the bill in
conference earlier this summer. Now there are concerns that the proposal has
been revived and is being offered by Senate Democrats in the continuing
negotiations over maritime security legislation -- and fears abound that the
White House might sign off on it."

- UPI's "Capital Comment," 9/26/02

Suing for Fun and Profit

"The idea of suing gun manufacturers for the criminal misuse of their
lawfully manufactured products by third parties over whom they have no
control is an obviously ridiculous misapplication of the law.

"...This is like holding General Motors responsible for the person who
drives his Corvette sports car at 140 mph. Both the car and the gun have
the potential to be misused. But neither are inherently dangerous - and any
unlawful use to which they are put by their owners is certainly something
neither the automaker nor the gun manufacturer can control. To suggest
otherwise, is a distortion of cause and effect, which would open the door to
potentially limitless lawsuits affecting just about any consumer good one
could think of."

Um, Isn't the GOP Supposed to Be AGAINST These Kinds of Quotas and
Set-Asides?

"Gender is emerging as a major factor in the race to replace retiring Rep.
J.C. Watts Jr. (R-Okla.) as GOP conference chairman, a highly visible, much
sought after post. . . . (M)any in the caucus believe that the highest ranks
of the leadership should have at least one woman.

"Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio)...wasted little time lining up support (to
replace Watts). Lawmakers supporting Pryce noted her competence and gender.
'I think gender is a very important factor,' said Rep. Jennifer Dunn
(R-Wash.). . . . Other Pryce supporters agreed. 'Gender plays part of a
role,' said Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.), who is supporting Pryce. . . . I
think [gender] plays a role,' said Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), another
supporter."

- The Hill, 9/25/02

[Editor's Note: Would it be impolitic to note that all the representatives
quoted who say gender should be a factor in filling this position are of the
same gender as the gender of Rep. Pryce? Yeah, I thought so.]

In Your Heart You Know He's Right

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more
efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote
welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to
repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones
that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose,
or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not
attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first
determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later
be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I
was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am
doing the very best I can."
