One Little, One Little, One Little Indian

What in the heck is in the water in Montgomery County, Maryland?

Do y'all remember that little dust-up over Santa Claus last year in the town
of Kensington in Montgomery County? Somebody complained about Santa Claus
lighting the town's Christmas tree in an annual ceremony marking the
holidays, so the town's elected pooh-bahs decided to ban Santa from the
festivities. Bah-humbug.

Well, welcome to Burtonsville, Maryland, where Paint Branch High School
chose as its fall play an adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Ten Little
Indians."

Uh-oh.

Yep. One little Indian got his loincloth all up in a bunch. Richard Regan,
who's been leading an effort to ban the use of Indian names for high school
sports teams, sent a letter to the principal of the school complaining that
the title of the play was offensive to Native Americans, American Indians,
Indian Natives, or whatever he wants to be called these days.

Well, Chief Regan's one-brave warpath was enough to send the local school
bureaucrats scurrying in retreat. Montgomery County schools spokeswoman
Kate Harrison told the Washington Times yesterday
<http://washingtontimes.com/metro/20021112-23347395.htm>, "We have no plans
to pull production of the play, but we have changed the name. For this
performance, the play will be called 'And Then There Were None.'"

Harrison wanted to be "sensitive to the concerns and issues that were raised
by Mr. Regan." Where, oh where, was Kate Harrison at Little Big Horn when
Gen. Custer REALLY could have used her?

Well, I couldn't find an email address for Ms. Harrison, but her office
phone number is: (301) 279-3853. And if you live outside the area but are
signed up for GOPLongDistance.com, a 60-second rant will cost you less than
one Indian-head nickel. Heck, for that price you might even want to send
some smoke signals to the school superintendent, Dr. Jerry Weast, at (301)
279-3381.

Or if you're really hooked on using this Internet thingy, you can email the
Paint Branch school principal, Jeanette Dixon, at:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

For now though, it looks like it might be a beautiful Indian summer day
outside and I'm gonna brave the rush-hour traffic of road warriors and head
to a big pow-wow at Chief Grover Norquist's downtown D.C. tee-pee where
insensitive conservatives meet every week for a war council, after which we
all sit around and smoke peace pipes.

I'm sorry, was that insensitive?

Screwin' the Pooch In 'Bama

"Mr. Muth, I completely agree with your assessment of the Libertarian Party.
They stand for many of the same principles as do conservative Republicans,
but all too often their indiscriminate fielding of candidates results in the
defeat of conservatives and the election of big-government liberals.

"Here in Alabama, it appears conservative Republican Congressman Bob Riley
[ACU Lifetime Rating of 96] has defeated liberal Democrat Governor Don
Siegelman by about 3,000 votes, but Siegelman has not conceded. The
Libertarian candidate, John Sophocleus, received about 20,000+ votes in the
election. In the unlikely event Siegelman wins this election, Sophocleus and
the Libertarians will have to live with the fact that they contributed to
Siegelman's victory."

Screwin' the Pooch on the Left Coast

"You might want to add this one to your list of Libertarian blunders:
California Senate District 12.

Rusty Areias (D) 62,163 47.9%
Jeffrey Denham (R) 61,879 47.7%
David Eaton (L) 5,797 4.4%

"We worked on this one so it's even more difficult to accept. There are still
a few mail-in ballots to be counted and it's destined for a recount, but
we'd be beating Areias (a guy disliked even by Democrat staffers) even if
just 10% of those stinking Libertarians had voted with their brains and not
their butts."

NION Lights

Wanna have some fun in your "spare" time. Take a cyber walk over to the
"Not In Our Name" web site (http://www.nion.us/SIGNERS.htm) and scroll
through the names of the supposedly 30,000 people who have signed this
limousine-liberal-inspired petition opposing giving Saddam Hussein what-for.
It's riddled with obviously made-up signers, such as the recently-added I.P.
Daily and Barney the Purple Dinosaur.

My favorite, though, is "Jonathan S. Tuttle, US Army, Capt., 4077 Mobile
Army Surgical Hospital"Any fan of the late-great TV series MASH will
appreciate the pure irony of this listing. For those who don't remember,
Tuttle was a made-up soldier in this made-up show who now appears as a
made-up name on a goofy liberal web site. Beautiful.

That Ol' Double Standard

"Florida radio host Neil Rogers has been broadcasting a racist song parody
about National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Fox News Channel reports:
Among the song's lines: 'Is you their black-haired answer-mammy who be
smart?' and 'Does they like how you shine their shoes, Condoleezza? Or the
way you wash and park the whitey's cars?'

"Says Niger Innis of the Congress of Racial Equality: 'If Rogers, instead of
being a white liberal, were a white conservative like Rush Limbaugh using
the type of language that Rogers was using, he'd be kicked off the air.'"

And Now You Know the Rest of the Story

"To hear it from William Bennett, the number of Americans 'seeking'
treatment for marijuana is rising. The former drug czar is deliberately
misrepresenting government data in an effort to justify the war on some
drugs.

"Record numbers of Americans arrested for marijuana possession have been
forced into treatment by the criminal justice system. The resulting
distortion of treatment statistics is then used to make the claim that
marijuana is 'addictive.'

"There is a big difference between voluntary treatment and
government-coerced treatment. Zero-tolerance drug laws do not distinguish
between occasional use and chronic abuse. The coercion of Americans who
prefer marijuana to martinis into taxpayer-funded treatment centers says a
lot about U.S. government priorities, but absolutely nothing about the
relative harm of marijuana."

Another One Bites the Dust

"It is with great sorrow and sadness that I am announcing my move from Las
Vegas," was the opening sentence of a letter we just received from Doc
Weaver, the Ob/Gyn who delivered our two daughters.

Why?

"As you probably know, the malpractice crisis has hit Las Vegas with a fury.
I had hoped and prayed that the special session (of the Nevada Legislature
in August) would give some immediate resolution to the malpractice
situation. However, this is not the case. I have kept saying 'They will
not let it get that bad,' but no one of any authority has done anything, so
doctors are continuing to leave. I have decided to relocate my practice to
Oklahoma."

A similar letter could very well be coming to your mailbox soon.

In case you're not aware of the situation, the malpractice crisis Doc Weaver
refers to is the skyrocketing cost of malpractice insurance due to lawsuit
abuse by grubby personal injury attorneys.

A lot of people turned a deaf ear to this problem when the target was those
"bad" tobacco companies. But now the ambulance-chasers are hitting much
closer to home.

This isn't a manufactured "crisis" like the ones the left is so used to
conjuring up. This one is real . and it could have deadly consequences,
literally. Start paying attention to this issue, folks. It's ready to
explode.
