*************************************** Correction Last weekend's NASCAR race - where the "Daschle's Office" and "French Embassy" signs were seen on the doors of port-o-potties - was held in Ft. Worth, not Dallas. I was given a bum steer by a blond friend named Houston who lives in Dallas. :) *********************************** How to Subscribe If you know someone who might like to receive News & Views, you can sign 'em up at: http://www.chuckmuth.com. Therefore, Peter Arnett will no longer be reporting for NBC News and MSNBC." - NBC News President Neal Shapiro, 3/31/03 *************************************** Encourage Good Behavior Another one bites the dust! Thanks to everyone who called or emailed MSNBC voicing outrage over Arnett's Iraqi TV interview. We now ought to commend MSNBC for dealing with this Arnett situation so forcefully and quickly suggests my blond friend named Kerri Houston of Dallas. All too often we raise a stink when someone does something stupid, she points out, but fail to encourage good behavior when they do something good. So if you'd like to give MSNBC an "Atta Boy" for dumping Arnett, you can email them at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] . *************************************** How Come THIS Guy Didn't Get the Arnett Treatment? "That thug at Columbia University masquerading as a teacher? This is the NY Times' description: 'The professor, Nicholas De Genova, ... called for the defeat of United States forces in Iraq, and said the only true heroes are those who help defeat the American military. He said Americans who call themselves patriots are imperialist white supremacists.' "The president of the university said he was 'especially saddened' and the 'history professor who was one of the teach-in's organizers' said he found the remarks, 'personally ... quite reprehensible.' "That is the sum of the opposition by this institution of higher learning. Imagine, for a moment, the level of outrage which would be generated if a professor at Columbia University chose to begin his or her class with a prayer for the safety of our military personnel." - Rich Galen, Mullings.com, 3/31/03 *************************************** French Democrats Open New Front in NJ "Government officials in the Trenton, N.J. suburb of Fieldsboro...have banned the display of yellow ribbons and other war-related memorials from public property. . . . Fieldsboro Mayor Edward Tyler denied the move was a slap at the U.S. military fighting overseas. . . . The mayor and the entire borough council are Democrats." - CNSNews.com, 3/31/03 [Editor's Note: Was unable to locate an email address for this Peter Arnett wannabe mayor, but located a phone number: (609) 298-7138. Sad Ham comes to a sad end, roasting on a spit. The Count, a 'real-life' Sesame Street character who shows kids how to count, becomes a weapons inspector who shouts as he searches: 'One! One weapon of mass destruction! Ah ha ha ha! Two! Two weapons of mass destruction!' Big Bird represents America the Good and Oscar the Grouch plays a symbolic role as a whining Democrat." - Columnist Suzanne Fields [ Editor's Note: You can find the full satire piece at: http://www.thebrainstrust.co.uk/article.50.2627.html ] ************************************ NEW! 4.75 cents-per-minute Long Distance * All state-to-state calls in the continental U.S. * Residential or commercial * 6-second billing increments * 24 hours/day * 7 days/week * No access codes * No minimums * No activation fees * Calling Card Rate is 10 cents per minute * No monthly service charge unless your bill is less than $20.00 a month (then a $1.99 service charge will apply) * No need to change your local phone company * No hassles * Easy sign-up. * And a small portion of each bill goes to help continue publishing our FREE Chuck Muth's News & Views e-newsletter. "There should be some kind of penalty," says Rep. Duke Cunningham, California Republican. "If you...don't let us use a base, which causes us to come all the way round the other side, and delays our troops and gets some of our people killed, there needs to be some kind of accountability." Indeed. *************************************** Here's As Good a Place to Start As Any Deutsche Post, which is 69 percent owned by the German government, is attempting to acquire Airborne Inc. - the #3 overnight ground delivery service in the U.S. - to add to its DHL Worldwide Express operation. This billion-dollar-plus deal has raised concerns "about the degree of control that Deutsche Post (would be) able to exert on the domestic (U.S.) express package and cargo market" if it goes through. The deal is subject to federal regulatory review. If you don't think a company primarily owned by the anti-American German government - which flipped us the bird over Iraq - maybe shouldn't be rewarded with approval to buy an American company in order to take business away from other American companies, you might want to contact the U.S. Department of Transportation and urge them to conduct an investigation and hold hearings on this deal before it's approved. As noted, we can shoot 'em, stab 'em or bomb 'em - but we can't pepper spray 'em. Stupid, stupid, stupid. How in the world did something like this ever get through the Senate? Well, thanks to a little historical reminder from our friend Rob Booth, here's the answer: "The Senate approved the Chemical Weapons Convention on Thursday night after Sen. Trent Lott, the Republican leader, threw his support behind the treaty, which prohibits the production, storage and use of poison gas," wrote Adam Clymer in the New York Times on April 25, 1997. "The victory was a major success both for President Clinton and for Lott, who marked the first foreign policy test of his tenure as majority leader." Ah-ha! Before the vote, Lott told his colleagues, "This is the culmination of many years of tireless effort by men and women in both political parties who believe, as the president and I believe, that this treaty is a great victory for the United States. Our citizens will be safer, our nation will be stronger because of this treaty going into effect." Oh, really? Great victory, huh? Safer and stronger, huh? Lott maintained that military leaders "believe it will make our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines more safe in potential battlefields -- and less likely to face the horrible prospect of chemical weapons." Really? Hmm, that's not what they seem to be saying on daily television these days. Of course, sometimes it's hard to understand them with those chemical protection masks over their heads. And according to Clymer, "Clinton promised to withdraw from the treaty if its implementation compromised the country's military capabilities or led to the proliferation, not the control, of poison gas. Lott praised the statement as 'an ironclad commitment.'" Ironclad commitment, huh? Well, if Bill Clinton gave his word...well, there you have it. Good enough for me. I mean, Bill Clinton wouldn't lie or anything, would he? Nice job, senator. I'm sure our Boys in Baghdad feel a "Lott" safer today because of your capitulation to Bill Clinton in '97. Gosh, we sure miss you as Majority Leader. ************************************ Hitting the Airwaves Here are scheduled talk show appearances where I'll be discussing the idea of pulling the U.S. out of the U.N.
